LSSU Lakers 2014 off-season thread (part 2)

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014 off-season thread (part 2)

Actually, it's 0-0-0 at this point. Coaching W-L records don't begin until one becomes a head coach.

Absolutely right Bill. Let him do his job; he has some good looking recruits coming in the coming years and he has hired a couple of assistant coaches who appear to be good hires. The one thing I have seen this year for the first time is some excitement about the coming season. I'm ready to watch some Laker Hockey.

You know what I meant, Bill. His record as an assistant coach, for which he's had responsibility in recruitment, to date is 94-170-40. Everyone is speaking about his eye for talent, yet it's not reflected in his record.

Further, Whitten's record breaks out like this:
Wayne State 6-23-6
MSU video 20-17-4
Alaska 21-42-11
MTU 47-88-19

He has never been with a team that's had a winning season. I want to see the Lakers have a winning season, but it's unlikely to happen under Whitten's regime.

No, he has no official W-L record. You don't get to invent your own "facts".

Here's his official stats. Note that he has no W-L record. http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=33832

Mel Pearson statistically doesn't get credit for all those winning seasons at UM. His official W-L record only counts the last three seasons at MTU. Now I'm sure the Tech fans are happy to have Mel as coach and the expectations are high over time, but his W-L record up this point still doesn't reflect those expectations. It takes time. http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=16048

Bill, Bill, Bill - you are forever putting your own spin on things! Facts are facts, and I checked out Damon's record and it's factual. It's all that he has to stand on at this point. It's not looking too promising, but you just keep spinning! I find it most amusing. And wasn't it you who was bragging about Whitten's recruiting ability?!

Go away Midge. Bill's right, Whitten has no coaching record. Anyone that follows sports should understand that. I get what Laker is saying about his ASSISTANT coaching record but I think that all means nothing. The qualities I would deem important to an Asst. coach wouldn't be their W/L that a head coach earned them, but how they deal with players (relationships/discipline), how well they recruit, and if their positional focus is seeing a steady incline every year (i.e. goaltending, special teams, and forwards).

No one likes what I have to say because I don't agree with what you all say. I don't really care. The information I share is all factual, but if you'd prefer to stick your heads in the sand and ignore it, that's fine too. I don't care.

I know that the MTU players did not like Whitten, nor respect him. They would make a contest of shooting pucks at his skate blades during practice. Hummmm, sounds like love to me! Mel didn't hire him, he inherited him, so showing him the door because he felt there were some real recruitment mistakes made was the choice he made.

Not even a bit of truth to this statement. Mel evaluated whether Damon would remain on the staff when he was hired. Whitten earned the right to stay after the evaluation. Mel was very complimentary of Damon's time at Tech in all the papers after Damon signed on at Lake State. Some of our higher end incoming players were questioned to make sure they were still on board with Damon leaving.
Mel would never allow such dissension to go on.
Mel is even a better person than a coach and he is one amazing head coach.

Scott Borek was 30-8-2 as an assistant under Jeff Jackson. Look hows things turned out...... This argument is a bunch of crap.

Standard protocol to be complimentary!

Do you honestly think any higher end players would dissent?!

Once again, you're as full of it as a Christmas goose. Mel interviewed at least two other candidates for the second assistant position, before opting to retain Whitten. The job was never guaranteed to him until he was effectively rehired by Pearson. To repeat, if DW was so 'disliked' by the players, and Pearson was so anxious to have a full-time goalie coach, then why wasn't he forced out and replaced with the very popular Steve Shields last summer when the opportunity was there?

It's just patently obvious that you have something against Whitten, so you're making up all this garbage about his time at a program that you know nothing about, and claiming you have "sources".

Not making up anything. Totally credible sources. Sorry if it flies in the face of what you'd like to believe!

Midge, what really hurts what you say is the fact you still think Roque was not given a fair shake after 9 years of leading the team nowhere.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014 off-season thread (part 2)

I will say this, Pearson wasted no time in going after Shawhan once Whitten left.

Who are you trying to convince? Yourself? You've pretty much lost credibility on this forum with some of the statements you've made since Jim Roque was fired. Why keep digging yourself into a deeper hole?

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014 off-season thread (part 2)

Yea,people knew Whitton was going to get fired and Lake State felt so bad for the guy that they gave him a head coaching job to keep a roof over his head.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014 off-season thread (part 2)

I also heard that Mel Pearson made Joe Shawhan an offer that he could not turn down. Makes me wonder if Whitton and Shawhan were both available to be made a coach at MI Tech ,Pearson would jump at the chance to have Shawhan. That leaves me feeling that maybe the wrong coach was picked to lead Lake State.

Remember, without Shields we took a little step back. Mel wanted to secure it and had an opening.
Damon Whitten also got a coach that specializes in goalies.
Do not read too much into it other than an opening presented itself and Tech fixed the goalie coach position which was not as sound after Shields left.
