LSSU Lakers 2014-15

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014-15

This is definitely a building year. Success can't be measured in wins and losses alone. Let's see where we are three years from now.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014-15

This is a wasted year and not a rebuilding year . Roque recruited all the players except Defiel and we have to ask ourselves had Whitton been the coach last year, would he had recruited any of the players Roque did and I am thinking there is a good chance he would not have . Whitton is bringing in more players next season than he is losing and the reason has to be is he is looking for a totally different style of player than what Roque was recruiting . Rebuilding starts next season .

Damon has more recruits then Deifel not that I'm arguing with you. In two or three years we will all have a better idea of the kinds of players he wants or needs.

Others on here have said Defiel is Whittons only recruit for this season but if you know which others also are his, tell me . It would be nice to know which ones are his and how they have been doing since he brought them in. Would give us a good idea how good a recruiter he is and what type of players we can expect from him .

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014-15

Next season will be Damon's first true recruiting class. When he was hired this past Spring, pretty much all schools had completed recruiting for this season. That's normally going to be true anytime a new coach is hired after the completion of a season. But we still had holes to fill for this season. We were still short a couple of D-men, a goalie and a forward to fill out the roster. Roque didn't generally recruit younger kids to have a pipeline of commitments waiting in the wings like most schools do. Roque for the most part recruited season to season and he hadn't yet been able to recruit enough guys for this season's team when he was fired.

As Perky has pointed out, Damon brought in 5 guys after he was hired. He recruited one more D-man than normal, probably to create more competition at that position since we were going to be so inexperienced there. But all 5 guys he brought in were guys that no one else (Div 1) recruited and were either going to be playing Div 3 hockey this season or not playing college hockey at all. I think he did very well finding some guys and giving them a chance to play at this level.

Seems I remember 7 recruits for next season and 6 for the 2016 season but a couple of the 2016 season have 98 birth dates .

Hard to say for sure. You can't go strictly by what the recruiting web sites say. It depends upon if any existing guys leave early (for any reason), what scholarship money they have available for any given season, and how fast the recruits develop in Junior hockey. I think they recruit younger guys with the understanding that it could be for any one of a couple of seasons. Many schools are doing that now.

Obviously the recruits with 94 birth dates have to come in next season because they are using up their Junior hockey eligibility this season. I don't think we'll see the recruits with 98 birth dates before the 2017-18 season.

I think Damon did a pretty good job getting the players he got to come in last year at short notice. But I don't think it will be the class that will define his stay. Meaning I think he's going to recruit some talented student athletes to come in the next few years.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014-15

According to Damon on last nights show, it sounds like we will be playing a NC series with NMU next season, possibly home and home as well as any other year we play them only twice in conference play. Same thing goes with Michigan Tech. A good idea IMO and it sounds like Damon wants to bring a Superior Cup like thing back as well which would be really cool. Unfortunately, we will be making two separate trips to Alaska again next season.

Wherever the conference series is played, the non-conference series will be played in the other rink. Next year LSSU will play at NMU in WCHA and home in NC. They will play Tech 4 times in conference. The following year the Lakers play NMU 4 times in conference, at Tech in conference and home against Tech non conference. Personally, I'd like to see the Cappo Cup expanded to all 3 teams since Father Cappo was a Copper Country native.

I would rather play the UP rivals non-con then go to the big schools with no return games to Abel arena.

I agree! I'm glad Damon, Walt, and Mel all want the Yooper schools to play each other four times every year.

It's also very interesting that there will be beer sales this weekend as well as the last home series. Hopefully that turns out good.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014-15

I happened to learn about beer being served at games a few weeks ago at an Eagles game. I was talking with a Sault Police officer who mentioned that, when the Lakers started serving alcohol, the Sault Police would supplement the LSSU Public Safety.

They serve beer at home games now? Seems like a good way to increase attendance. Also a good money maker, as most people are willing to overpay for beer at sporting events, myself included.

Damon has said it's pretty much an experiment. If it's a success, then maybe we'll see beer sales next season.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014-15

From the LSSU Press Release:

LSSU Concessions will be selling adult beverages for the first time ever inside Abel Arena during both games of the series. A designated wristband area will be set up on the second level of the arena near the upstairs concession stand. The first beverage is $3.50 and every drink after will be $3 with the same cup. Budweiser, Bud Light, Busch, Busch Light, and Labatt Blue will be among the beverages available.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014-15

Assuming we play good D and are good in net, we need to have the offense step up and get us a couple of wins this weekend. We have another bye next weekend whereas UAH and Anchorage will both be playing. A couple of wins this weekend will give us a bit of a cushion in the fight for the last playoff spot.
