LSSU Lakers 2014-15

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014-15

It would not hurt to change goalies for the second game of the weekend . It is not like they are winning with a one goalie system.
Damon sounded more frustrated than normal after the game about some guys not giving 100% for the entire game. If one of those guys happens to be Defiel, then perhaps there will be a change tomorrow evening.

A repeat of last Friday's North Dakota game. Lakers have a lead and then the wheels completely fell off.

It seems the wheels have completely fallen off Globke . The season is half over and he is sitting at one goal and three assist .

I think that he's banged up. I kept an eye on him in Huntsville: he'll look great one shift and old the next.

There are a lot of “coaches” out there who don’t have CLUE ONE about how to really coach! These individuals consistently do far more damage to young people than they do good.

Behaviors that Characterize “Bad Coaching”

You’re NOT a good coach when you play favorites:
Good coaches treat their athletes fairly. They don’t operate with two different sets of rules, i.e. one for the “chosen few” and one for the rest of the team. Coaches who play favorites go a long way towards creating performance disrupting dissension on their squads.

You’re NOT a good coach when you play “head games” with your athletes:
If you talk behind their backs, play one athlete off against another or are dishonest in your interactions with your players then you are doing nothing constructive to help your players learn and grow as athletes and individuals. Telling a player one thing and then turning around and doing exactly the opposite is not how you go about effective coaching. For example, promising a player more playing time if he/she does A, B and C, and then keeping them on the bench after they do everything you’ve just asked of them is a psychologically insidious game that will kill your athlete’s love of the sport, crush their spirit and destroy their confidence. This is not how great coaches motivate their players!

Roque is gone.

People in town keep raving about Defiel, but the facts are the only list he is even ranked in is minutes played. I think its only fair to give the other guys a chance as well. Defiel may very well come out on top, but both us and the coaches won't know until they test them out. Practice is so much different than game situations.

It is evident that Damon will continue to play his recruit(s). No matter what "credible sources" divulge, let it be know, that it is the "credible sources" selfish "fix" to downplay and push out players; practice or otherwise. A ploy since the dark ages.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014-15

This has to be the worse hockey team Lake State has put out on the ice in it's 46 year history . This team has no offense,no defense,no goaltending,no power play and no penalty kill. I don't even believe it has any conditioning as it seems they eventually get run into the ground during the course of a game. Even Crawford kept repeating how tired they looked in the third period and Bill has been doing Laker hockey long enough to recognize a tired team.

My god Whitten ,switch goalies. Defiel is going out and losing every night and by the end of the season, his confidence level will be in the toilet if it isn't already. Whitten, you are losing every night with Defiel as it is and maybe it is time to give the other two guys a shot at playing. Whitten, at least change goalies so it appears you are trying to make something work.

I think the conditioning is better than you suspect. It's not yet as good as the coaches want, but it's slowly getting better. When Bill Crawford was talking about them looking tired, I think he was primarily referring to the D-men. The Lakers only had 5 D-men last night. Bird, Spratte and Loesch didn't even make the trip due to injuries, and Harris was out with the flu (and Chatham had just gotten over the flu). The team as a whole isn't playing with a lot of confidence and that's probably due in large part to their difficulty in scoring goals. That puts added pressure on the freshmen D and goalies. The next couple of seasons will give us a good idea of how successful Damon is at bringing in players with a higher skill level, particularly forwards to give us a scoring boost.

The holiday tournament in Florida will be a good opportunity to give both goalies a start. I'd like to see that happen.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014-15

Bill.I think when you have a team leading the nation in losses and at the bottom or near the bottom in every stat there is. You have got a pretty poor team playing hockey on weekends. Next year may be better with Whittons own recruits coming in but as it stands for this season , this is not a very good hockey team and perhaps they will get things turn around but as of now, this is probably the worse team Lake State has ever put out on the ice.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014-15

Point the finger at inexperienced coaching from front to back. A coach who decides his lines based upon practice and the ones he advocates is pathetic. The conditioning excuse is getting old and is used as a scapegoat for subpar coaching. Cheer up, it only gets worse! Thank you MTUHockey. We love you, too!

Actually it is the 49th season right now. Anyways, the record for most losses in a season in school history is 28 set back in 2002-03. This team very well might reach 30 losses for the first time. The Lakers should set a goal to avoid these negative records.

Just a typo. I meant to hit the 9 but was thinking 1966 when it got going and hit the 6 and not the 9 .

The season is only half over, but even if the Lakers wind up with their worst record ever I don't think that necessarily means they are the worst team that Lake State has ever put on ice. Things are being compounded by a bad schedule (only 14 home games out of 36 total) and trying to get the players to adjust to a totally different coaching style/philosophy with a new set of coaches. I think the Lakers likely would have a few more wins by season's end if Damon had decided to not yet implement his uptempo philosophy of play and instead tried to adjust his coaching style more to the current players rather than vice versa, but what would be the point of that? If he waited until next season to go uptempo (when his first recruiting class is here), he'd still have a couple of years of Roque recruits on the team and the team would be starting that process from scratch. Better to bite the bullet now and get started on that path.

The cupboard that Damon inherited was pretty bare. No returning goalies with any college experience. Only 2 returning D-men with much experience. 2 of the top 3 scorers from last season graduated, and that from a team that also had trouble scoring. And the 3rd (Globke) doesn't have the luxury of playing on a line with the other 2 like he did last season. It's certainly been a disappointing season for Globke so far but he really didn't figure to have as much success as last season.

Although it was expected and didn't come as any surprise, the early departure of Czuczman to the pros has really made things a lot tougher on the Lakers this season. Having him in the lineup this season would have really helped the overall D.
