LSSU Lakers 2014-15

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014-15

Damon and Metro were talking to some recruits up in the hallway before the Saturday game at North Dakota. I wonder if this was who they were talking to.
I think Metro was at the USHL game in Fargo that Thursday night. He was probably there looking at Hayes and also checking up on McArdle who had already committed to the Lakers at that point. It could very well be that you saw Damon and Metro talking to McArdle and Hayes.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014-15

There are a lot of “coaches” out there who don’t have CLUE ONE about how to really coach! These individuals consistently do far more damage to young people than they do good.

Behaviors that Characterize “Bad Coaching”

You’re NOT a good coach when you play favorites:
Good coaches treat their athletes fairly. They don’t operate with two different sets of rules, i.e. one for the “chosen few” and one for the rest of the team. Coaches who play favorites go a long way towards creating performance disrupting dissension on their squads.

You’re NOT a good coach when you play “head games” with your athletes:
If you talk behind their backs, play one athlete off against another or are dishonest in your interactions with your players then you are doing nothing constructive to help your players learn and grow as athletes and individuals. Telling a player one thing and then turning around and doing exactly the opposite is not how you go about effective coaching. For example, promising a player more playing time if he/she does A, B and C, and then keeping them on the bench after they do everything you’ve just asked of them is a psychologically insidious game that will kill your athlete’s love of the sport, crush their spirit and destroy their confidence. This is not how great coaches motivate their players!

Well said. AMEN!!

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014-15

I hope Kevin didn't leave because he felt he wasn't given a honest look.
It likely was due to a lack of playing time. According to the Lakers stats, he got a total of about 8 periods of playing time with 3 starts this semester. Probably the biggest thing he had going against him was his size; 5-8 and 150. There's definitely been a movement towards college coaches wanting bigger goalies the past 10-15 years. That doesn't preclude smaller goalies getting a shot and doing well but you don't often see a Jeff Lerg or Jeff Jakaitis out there.

Kevin Murdock did basically the same thing after his freshmen year in college.

The Lakers getting a commitment from another goalie this week (Nick Kossoff) may have also affected Kevin's decision, although I think Kossoff was more likely not going to be with the Lakers until 2016-17 if Kevin was still around. I don't know if this latest news will move up Kossoff's arrival to next season. Another possibility is that the coaches knew about Kevin's plans for a little while now, even though it was just announced publicly, and that prompted them to make an offer to Kossoff to come in next season.

Good luck to Kevin.

Roque recruited Kevin and I am not sure if Roque ever recruited a bad goalie . That did seem to be a strength of Roque .

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014-15

Just a UND's fan thought on this matter. When LSSU came to The Ralph this year, DeFiel got absolutely shelled in the 2nd and 3rd period Friday night. I feel like after the 3rd or 4th goal it would have been good to change it up for LSSU as they were still very much in the game. However, they stuck with DeFiel and I thought 'ok, they'll obviously give another a goalie a shot saturday'. Then out skates DeFiel for Saturday night and I was shocked.

I did notice that Aldridge was really short in pregame warmups. However, UND had a 5'8" goalie by the name of Karl Goehring that led them to the 2000 National Championship and is currently their goalie coach. One of the best, if not THE best, goalie I've ever seen play in a Sioux uniform.

Best of luck to Kevin in his future endeavors.

He did get 3 starts. The .833 save % may have contributed to the lack of further playing time.

Megariotis is big. Looking forward to seeing what he can do. Hopefully he gets a chance.
