LSSU Lakers 2014-15

New 98 born recruit for the Lakers...was ranked #40 in the top 70 uncommitted prospects by OTB...http://overtheboards.net/select-70-uncommitted-prospects-ranking-october-2014/

I am entirely impressed by the job Whitten and crew are doing in recruiting players to LSSU....I do not think we realize the impact the recent committed recruits will have on the program...if they all make it to campus and play as expected (and expectations are high because the Lakers haven't recruited this type of talent since the Jackson era) we'll all be laughing and saying "remember when we use to think Roque was a good recruiter!"

Agreed.

Teammate of fellow recruit Jaden Anderson.

Roque and staff, with very few exceptions, had very little success going after kids under 19, to the extent that I wonder how hard they even tried.

Agreed.

The kind of players that are lined up from this staff either were not even approached bye or didn't listen to the prior coach. The future of LSSU Hockey seems very bright.

Ahhhh...you were on the recruiting trail, right? You know who was and wasn't approached.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014-15

If the Big Ten is able to supplement their hockey scholarships it makes it much harder for a Lake State or Ferris to offer a kid a full that State was only offering a half and get him.

Are you old and have a bad memory. Your friend always said on the radio show that they didn't waste their time or money chasing the higher caliber players.

Whitten is doing something called stockpiling. Hoping to commit kids early and see how they pan out. Personally I think it's a bad strategy - unethical even - but many schools do it. Bigger schools can get away with it because of their school reputation. I don't think Lake State can afford to do this.

Further, Jeff Jackson did not recruit in this manner, nor does he condone stockpiling. Read the article listed below. It's very interesting and clearly illustrates Jackson's opinion on the practice.

I understand the concern, but it's not accurate at this point. LSSU has at best an average number of recruits in the pipeline, I think they're just now playing catch-up to get up to a minimal competitive level. They are not approaching the numbers of BC, Michigan, Minnesota, etc. They don't even have as many commits as Tech, Mankato, or Northern.

Agreed. LSSU is indeed playing catch up to what almost every other school has been doing for years. LakerBuff has no basis for saying that Damon Whitten is stockpiling as it is defined in the article.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2014-15

No hating. The Joyce was easily the worst barn among those in the old WCHA & CCHA. The wasn't even a close second. Compton Family Arena is simply the best. LSSU fans will really enjoy the Notre Dame experience.
Davy, I believe he was referring to the LakerBuff post.

You will enjoy Compton Ice Arena. One the nicest ice arenas I've ever been in. Great place to watch a college hockey game.

I'll be down there this weekend as well and it will be my first visit there. From what I hear, it's the nicest arena next to North Dakota's Ralph Engelstad Arena.

We'll see. Whitten isn't done yet! This is, in fact, stockpiling, as it's not a tactic LSSU has ever used in it's history of recruiting. So by comparison, it is stockpiling.

Also, I posted the article to show JNACC that Jeff Jackson never employed such recruiting tactics. He did and does it the old fashioned way (as referenced in the article). JNACC was trying to say that we haven't had the caliber of recruits at LSSU since Jackson, and that Whitten is in the right track by stockpiling. And I'm saying you don't have to stockpile to find them, as evidenced by the teams Jackson recruited.

But if you want to compete for blue chippers, it's necessary to recruit at younger ages than it was then - which I agree is a shame, but the alternative is to accept the leftovers. The game has changed a lot since Jackson was at Lake State, he would be hopelessly outgunned today trying to recruit 18-year-olds to a small school. Tech hasn't gone after the really young kids yet, but I'd rather do so than sit on the sidelines whining about the "good old days."
The big programs also usually need more than 5 or 6 freshmen due to early departures so it makes sense for them to recruit higher numbers.
