LSSU Laker Hockey 2011-12

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2011-12

I am glad that everyone did not wait for ND to make a move, allowing them to believe that it was all about them.

I don't give a **** where ND goes.........ND / UAH are on the outside at this point.
Maybe a basis for a new CCHA with the Atlantic teams......Ha!

It sounds like UAH will be in trouble internally and externally moving forward.....why not drop two scholie and join AC? Live to fight another day?

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2011-12

Well, now we have the exact conference I was hoping for this summer. A UP-centric conference, with Alaska and BSU --- the Great Northern Snowbelt Conference.

LSSU, MTU, NMU, BSU, UAF, and UAA. With Mankato and Ferris on the wings. Not sure what BGSU is going to do -- maybe drop some scholarhsips of their own and join AH? Whats not to love?

Either way, the UP schools basically now have their own conference. No more worrying about SCSU and Minneapolis interests. Minnesota is, on the whole, an afterthought. Yeah, I hear some of your clucking -- no major media coverage, no major media outlets. I guess I just don't care. Detroit and Minneapolis didn't care about the UP ever, ever, ever before. Why start now?

I like how stealthy WMU's information people are being . . . . not actually naming the potential new conference . . . and then noting that NCHC representative will be one of the speakers. I love Western because they are who they are, a little goofy around the edges, pretending to be a little bigger than maybe they are -- but they don't care. They certainly don't care what I think. And I have always loved that about Western, in general. I sometimes wish other non-BigTen schools in Michigan took the same attitude.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2011-12

WCHA just becomes a weaker league now is all . Who will the NCHC steal out of it next ? Be a better league if the CCHA goes after MTU,Northern MI.LSSU, Ferris State,Bowling Green and 4 Atlantic teams .

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2011-12

Why didn't the CCHA stay as a league and pull the remainder of the WCHA into the CCHA conference. The WCHA is going to be made of more CCHA teams than WCHA . The better teams in the WCHA will now most likely be former CCHA teams now that St Cloud pulled a fast one on the leagues . Was the new commisioner of the CCHA played for a fool or what ? All it took in college hockey was for one rich guy in America to shake up an entire sport .

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2011-12

Nice to finally know about WMU and SCSU. Hopefully we know what BGSU and Notre Dame do next week. I'm guessing BGSU goes to the WCHA. Perhaps BGSU goes with Notre Dame to Hockey East? I doubt it happens, but you never know. I'm sure BGSU will join the WCHA with perhaps MSU-Moorhead as the 10th WCHA team.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2011-12

I'm agreeing with Laker Blue. I still like the WCHA. Sure, I am disappointed that SCSU is out of the picture. I liked the 3 Yooper teams and 3 MN teams (now 2) with the rest. It will be a great non-conference start-up as the NCHC, powers as they may be, will be looking for home/home series (not just $35,000 guarantee games) and will find themselves eating crow 30-35% of the time. They will be expecting to win 9.5 out of 10 and will get only 7 (which will not be as good when they were all in the WCHA). Go Beavers!

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2011-12

I hate to lose SCSU....a great venue and a solid quality program, but they did feel they were more of a UMD type program than a Mankato or MTU type.
They were supposedly in the "click" early on.....so it did work out for them.

WMU is looking to the future, and have committed the budget, staff, etc. to play with the Big Boys. All D-1 sports fits the NCHC original mold. Adding UMD opened the door for SCSU.
The Big Ten conference will partner with NCHC for a lot of non conference games with solid pair wise gains. (and nice geographic match ups) It continues some regional rivalries and gives everyone a travel break. Both leagues will be about BIG matchup weekends and will home and home within a 2 year window. They are both going for the big TV pKgs which means match ups the casual fan will want to see.

WCHA teams will have minimal home games v Big Ten or NCHC teams but some paydays on the road. I think the WCHA non conference home schedule will be a challenge. the Minnesota schools get the Gophers, but I don't see many big ten teams rolling into the UP on a regular basis.....ditto for UAA / UAF trying to get non conference home games.

Things are settling in....I hope UAH can find a spot before the doors close.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2011-12

SCSU had around 18,000 students as of last Fall so they are a lot bigger school than most of the "new" WCHA schools. I would be very surprised to see BG go anywhere other than the WCHA, although if they did happen to go elsewhere that would open up a spot for UAH even if Moorhead does start a Div 1 program. If the Moorhead effort doesn't pan out, that also opens up a spot for UAH. Notre Dame going to the NCHC seems to make the most sense, but with WMU and SCSU now going there that would bring it up to 9 teams with the Irish and would necessitate even more unbalanced scheduling. But maybe Notre Dame will go elsewhere even though they have an invitation to the NCHC.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2011-12

The next question becomes what other teams a year or so down the road does the NCHC go after and I have a feeling they want at least a 10 team league . This whole thing is starting to turn sour.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2011-12

Radke was at the picnic, he was doing well at the beanbag toss.

Did anyone else notice that Schofield was listed as on the roster for the Ducks game tonight? http://ducks.nhl.com/club/preview.htm?id=2011010016[/QUOTE

Thanks, we spent most of our time at the dunk tank, so must have missed him. Good that he's up an around, though.

I still think that the NCHC will stay elite, and I'm not sure what other programs they'll offer an invite to. I think that the teams in Hockey East are laughing out loud, as they're staying in their bus league while the midwest leagues are now a geographic train wreck. I agree with most that Bowling Green will probably join the WCHA, but have a gut feeling that Notre Dame somehow gets in the Big 10 (or maybe I'm just suffering from lack of sleep...who knows...).

Notre Dame would need to join the Big 10 in all sports in order to play in the Big 10 hockey conference.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2011-12

The WCHA is fast becoming the Atlantic conference of the west.

I honestly did not expect Western to join but held out hope that they would. Losing St Cloud hurts....alot! Who would have thought that we would be begging a program like B.G. to join our conference in order to give us D-1 representation.

No matter what though, I am much happier that Lake State is in this conference sans a St Cloud and Western than one featuring Atlantic Conference teams.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2011-12

Bowling Green has now been given until Oct. 7 to give an answer to the WCHA. At this point, I like the 8 team conference that we're in now. Losing St. Cloud stings a little, but I still think the Lakers are where they should be conference wise. An article stated that BG is stall talking to the four Atlantic schools, and maybe they'll team up with UAH to form their new look (C)CHA. This move could save the Chargers possibly, and could turn out to be a nice little conference for these schools. Why get caught up in the geographic train wreck that the midwest conferences are now.

Re: LSSU Laker Hockey 2011-12

I'm still happy that we will be in the same conference as the other two UP schools. It would have been nice to have SCSU in the conference but they did what they thought was best for them so who can blame them. UAH seems like a good possibility as long as their own powers that be do not pull the plug on the programm.

One week away from the drop of the puck, I hope Bill Crawford makes the trip to Alabama to call the game and give a little insight to the new players along with how the returning players have faired in summer work outs.
