Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

OK, here is the link to the gallery with more team photos: Laker Hockey 2013-2014 team photos

I'm really excited for this year in the new league. Let's go out and win it!
Any idea of what the various player combinations in the pictures means? There are no captions for each picture. Are some of the player in picture combinations supposed to have particular significance? Or are they just random combinations of players? It doesn't appear that there are class pictures; Seniors together, Juniors together, etc. (except that picture #2 may be all the freshmen?).

Looking at the pictures and the roster it seems they are lumped together by league and/or teams played for. I guess we also know who the Captains are this yr. Nice pics! Let's get the season going. Go Lakers!!!

Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

Why is there a big gap between the 1992 and 1994 banners? Did y'all get hosed in 1993?

GFM <— lived in Mississippi then ... lolwut hockeeeee?

Sorry for no captions. A friend from the university emailed me these with no captions.

Geof,

Sean Tallaire swears that he scored the tieing goal for the Lakers against Maine with under a minute left and an extra man on ice for the Lakers. Refs ruled it hit the crossbar and didn't go in. Video replay wasn't as great back then as it is now. You couldn't tell from the replay then that the puck actually went in and came out. Sean said it went in under the crossbar and quickly came out. Someone I know says Sean is a straight shooter and will forever tell you it went in, and he was standing right in front of the net. So maybe we did get hosed in 93 (of course we still would have had to win it in OT).

At least the hockey Gods made up for us in '94 against Northeastern in the 1st game of the NCAA tournament. Northeastern had scored in overtime, but the ref ruled it no goal. Lakers scored later in overtime to advance. And we know what happened after that.

Now that's the kind of "why is it like that?" bits that keeps stories going. Thanks, Bill.

Oh the Agony! Thanks for the walk down memory lane, Bill. I was in the building that evening. I swear the puck hit the back of the net.

At least we took it out on BU the following year in Cincy.

Actually, I still have the ESPN tape from that game. If you watch the tape and go frame by frame after Sean's shot you see the puck head toward the crossbar and it disappears for 4 frames.........where did it go? In the net and out. No overhead cameras and video back then so no luck. Get a copy of the ESPN tape and check it out. I've showed it to several people, including one who swore no goal, all shook their heads and said wow! I was at the game but sitting at the other end of the arena. It would have tied the game at 5-5 and likely would have meant OT. Doesn't mean we would have won.............but, at least a chance.

The other thing I remember was John Hendry right at the goal mouth by himself in the 2nd period losing the puck between his skates. Get a stick on it and it would have been 5-2 after 2..............maybe enough to win.

Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

Big news Laker fans, we have our first goalie for the 2014-2015 season in the fold. A little birdie told me that Peter Megariotis who was one of the top NAHL goalies before going to Ohio State last year has transferred to LSSU and will sit out this season before being eligible for the 2014-2015 season. I can't find any stories officially announcing this yet but after a google search brought up his Instagram account I took a peek and on his Instagram page there is a picture of an LSSU clock and a picture of of a goalie chest protector with the LSSU colors and logo, so I'm taking that as legitimate enough evidence to post this!

We already received a verbal commitment for next season from Kevin Aldridge who plays goalie for Fairbanks of the NAHL. Megariotis didn't see any playing time at OSU last season. He was their #3 goalie and he might be our #3 goalie next season, although he may get a chance to show he can do more. Anyone know the transfer rules on practicing? Can Megariotis practice with the Lakers this season?

Can practice. Can't play or even dress and play doorman at home.

My mistake, I forgot that someone had posted about Aldridge a few weeks ago. I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss Megariotis as a contender for some playing time, he didn't play at OSU last year but Hjelle played 34 games last season, the back-up was a freshman just like Megariotis and played 9 games. Megariotis obviously lost out on the bid for the back up job to start the season but with only 9 non-Hjelle games, all of them probably being considered relatively unimportant, I'm guessing the OSU staff probably didn't see it worth the time to stage a season long audition for the backup job since they knew any noteworthy game would be played by Hjelle. Megariotis was one of the top goalies in the NAHL when he played in the league, his NAHL stats are below:

2010-11 Fresno Monsters 6 games played GAA:3.72 Save % .887
Port Huron Fighting Falcons 15 games played GAA:2.84 Save % .916
2011-12 Port Huron Fighting Falcons 32 games played- GAA:2.52 Save% .905, Playoffs 3 games played GAA: 2.30 save % .930

Not sure if I would call those stats something to get excited about.

I'm pretty sure even Jim Montgomery is on record as saying he thinks that was in the net. I might have to track down that quote this weekend for old times sake.

Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

Not to take anything away from Megariotis, but he wasn't highly recruited. I saw an article indicating he thought he was going to wind up playing Div 3 (at Adrian), but OSU offered him a position late in the recruiting cycle and he wanted to play Div 1 so he jumped on it. And obviously things didn't work out for him at OSU.
