Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

Lakers should have some of the better goaltending in the nWCHA this coming season if Murdock and Kapalka stay healthy.

Laker goaltending wasn't impressive at all through the second half of the season. There were games when even the goaltending seemed to have collasped and was just as responsible for the collaspe of the team as were the offense and defense. I am not sure if anything coming back next season is going to be that much of a plus .

Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

Lakers were 48th, Nationally, in Team Offense & 33rd in Team Defense. I wouldn't say that inspires a ton of confidence.

Murdock was 10th, Nationally, in Save percentage. Unfortunately, he had to stop between 35-40 shots per game so his GAA was elevated. Kapalka had his worst year, statistically, last year, but I believe the shoulder injury sustained early on contributed to that. It will be interesting to see how Murdock is early on, as he suffered the same injury Kapalka did in the Sat. playoff loss to BG.

Murdock played well until the last few weeks of the season. From then on, he had some shaky games, with a couple of decent ones mixed in. We need a strong season from either Kapalka or Murdock (or both) next season. Every goalie is going to have an off night, but we didn't have the consistency in net we expected last season. Both guys had stretches where they didn't play that great.

So am I reading the news correctly? The word on the street is that every WCHA game will available online next year for viewing?

Other interesting tid-bit from the WCHA meetings: They are planning on using a few of the former CCHA refs.

Well, 1 out of 2 ain't bad, I guess.

I was going through an old computer and ran across some pictures from the Lakers championship teams meeting with the Presidents and thought I would share. Pretty cool to see them with Reagan, the elder Bush and Clinton.

And to think a few years before Frank Anzalone got to Lake Superior your college was about where they are right now, small crowds, finishes in the bottom half of the standings, no one giving them any hope or chance, and Frank gets there, builds the program, and wins a NCAA Championship a few seasons later, and responsible for laying the foundation for the other two titles.

Did the administration up there sit back when the previous coaches had year after year of losing season and excuses and keep them on saying there are no other options, did fans keep making excuses year after year after year after year after year after year after year after year??? No they went out, made a change, and ended up finding a Hall of Fame coach that made things happen. Frank was well on his way again to rebuilding that same program, who got decimated a few years after he left, before he was tossed aside in a shameful way. Evidence of this was the current coaches best two seasons with Frank's players and where he was taking the program.

The year before Frank II began, the team won 13 games. By Frank's 4th year back, they had won 8,6,9 & 9. That's "rebuilding?" LSSU certainly has not done well under Roque and it's probably not going to be a contender this year. But it's difficult to understand your logic. The coach who isn't winning should be fired and be replaced by one that won even less, just 18.9% of the time in his second stint. The game has passed the old guy by. He subsequently showed that in his ensuing minor league stints, where he was no better than a .500 coach and got canned two more times. Now put down the crack pipe and step away from the bar.

Thanks for the walk down memory lane!

Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

Truth Squad must have been Frank's 'fluff-er' before games back in the 90s. He's been out of a job ever since Frank left. Sad times.

All I have left for Truth is crude jokes, because his nonsensical quips about Frank don't really warrant any other type of response.

It was Bill Selman that started that turn around. Brought in 13 freshman in 1981-82. Anzalone took over x-mas the next year. He added two great recruiting classes in the next 2 years....which included Roque among others.

I agree. LSSU hockey generally floundered the 5 seasons Rick Yeo was head coach (they did have 1 winning season). Hiring Bill Selman to replace Yeo did indeed start the LSSU turn around. Selman was a good coach and smart hockey guy. He didn't stay at LSSU very long, but it was he that started the turn around and he who hired Frank. Frank then built the Lakers into a powerhouse.

Sellman did a good job at St. Louis and also coached at North Dakota and at Duluth.
