Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

Now that Ron Rolston has been named HeadCoach of the Buffalo Sabres, the Jim Roque leaving and going to the NHL rumor makes sense. That may be the only way the Lakers get a new coach before Roques contract runs out.........
There is still is an assistant coach position open in Buffalo. Unless Rolston fills it with someone else, the Roque rumor still has some wind in its sails.

Bill I am all for a fresh start for the Laker program. When do you think it is to late to find a replacement who will be able to begin to build the program for the future as opposed to a quick fix for a year?

In the case of a small school like LSSU, I'm not so sure there is a "too late" for this year point. We're not likely to get a high profile coach anyway.

Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

I believe that Coach Roque is going to be behind the bench come Opening Night in october.

However, the Buffalo situation may have been a mistake by a reporter -- or it might have been a reporter slipping news that was not yet entirely ready to be made public.

I suspect that any new coach, if the Lakers ever get a new coach, would likely be from the USHL ranks (which would make the most sense, recruiting wise) or an assistant from someplace else.

I have seen some speculation on Adrian's Fogerty. And then some pretty stern responses hinting that he might be willing to move up. I have oft wondered if he might not be waiting out Red's health in Ann Arbor.

A name that should be on the top of the lists for every program is Cary Eades.

Adrians Ron Forgerty would be a good choice.

Also, Derek Lalonde former DU and FSU Assistant Coach and present Green Bay Gamblers coach,

Mike Corbert would be a candidate.

Eric Rud

The Oz
If LSSU could pay LaLonde and their assistants at least what they make in Green Bay, he may be interested and would be an excellent choice. But I doubt he'd be interested in taking a big cut to Roque's salary. Rud would be a good option, Corbett may be affordable and has UP ties.
and Fogarty has done nothing but win and does have D-1 Assistant experience. The ability to hire an experienced assistant and recruiter would be key there. Osiecki may come with too high a price tag. But you never know until you ask...

Give Doug Weight a call time for another donation.

Actually you'd be looking at about $300,000 per year in salaries above what they are paying now just to get Blash and his chosen assistants in the neighborhood they were at at Western. Now you've also gotta convince him to leave the Wings and all the perks they have to offer, along with much greater opportunity for advancement.

Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

I believe Jeff Blashill is what the LSSU Lakers program needs. His brother Tim is a HS hockey coach in the Big Rapids area and he could become an assistant coach. Bring Doug Weight into the picture to do another big donation and with the renovation project going on this could be what the Lakers would need to get back to when Jeff Jackson coached.

A local boy could recruit local talent to top it off and people fill the Taffey Abel like never seen before, maybe they could change the name of the street in front the Abel to Blashill Drive and Weight street. Start recognizing names of the past like Mason, Comley, Weight, Jackson, and Anzalone.
Well sound Pink Pony,

Get real.

Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

We talk about Roque's salary being so low; quite frankly I have yet to see anything, over the last 8 years, he has done which warrants an increase in his salary. I'm sure they realize they will have to pay a quality coach more than Roque's salary.

Dave

The perks are he can go home coach with his brother and read somewhere his dad is a professor at LSSU.

The perks for the kids is can have a family reunion. And have the biggest house in the Soo.

You have to think positive and plant the seed and watch it grow look what MTU did with Mel Pearson, it can happen.

And Tech won 11 games last year. Is a family house in the Soo a big leap over a family house in Grand Rapids or Bloomfield Hills with the opportunity to work for one of the best organizations in the NHL? Is it worth it to put a dream of being an NHL Coach aside while the possibility is very reachable. Ten years from now maybe.

Give you a good example Newell Brown who coached two years at MTU left to pursue an NHL Head Coaching job. Guess what happen to him he ended up being an Assistant Coach for twenty years and is now unemployed as he was recently fired from the Vancouver Canaucks. He could have still been the Head Coach the MTU Huskies had he not left. There is no stability in coaching in the NHL like in College hockey/
So he's been an assistant in the NHL since he left Tech. He's made far more money than he would have made at Tech. And he made a bad decision? Look at what has happened at Tech since. There have been good coaches who couldn't win there consistently that have won at other levels. Bob Mancini won in the OHL. Herb Boxer in the CHL. Mike Sertich won at UMD. Yet none could win at Tech. What in the world makes you think Brown would have been any different and would not have been shown the gate just like the rest? And don't expect him to be unemployed for long, and likely making money not far off what Mel's gonna pull down in the greater Houghton Metro area.

Davyd83, quit trying to use sense and reality. Someone will give a dream up and someone will just write a check to cover it. I'm sure no one at LSSU ever has even talked to Weight. I'm gonna take a wild guess that my little Pony knows da UP college hockey scene way better and he probably has Blasill and the Truth Sisters on one touch speed dial. I'm sure he know all those guys, He's probably having hash browns with theDon at Mickys right now. Just don't step in what my little Pony leaves behind.

I agree he made a lot of money coaching in the bigs. He didnt get the HC in the NHL. Newell Brown might be the next in line to take the MSU Spartans job as Ron Mason was very high on Brown to become a successfull College coach.

You seem to insinuate that he would have been better off at Tech. And though he may have been high on Mason's list, he hasn't been a part of college hockey in 20 years. But he might make the list if TA doesn't work out. But that's not happening soon.

Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

From what I understand Ron Mason was real high on Newell Brown. He could and still can become a college legend he had the tools but went and stayed jumping from team to team every three to four years. From Columbus, Ducks, Canaucks, and Bluejackets. All I am saying is Mason had high regards for Mr Brown he just didnt go that route. Am I saying he would have better with Tech then the pros. You would have to ask Newell Brown that question? I do think had he stayed in college hockey he would have become another Red or Parker.

Are you trying to imply that Brown would have become a lifer college guy by taking the Rick Comley route? What if he didn't want to coach at a small school? The stability that comes with success at small schools parlayed into decades-long runs at top jobs comes very often, and those who set themselves up for it don't always get the job. I know Danton Cole from his time here at UAH. He took that job with USA hockey because it was a great career move for him, and especially because it put him back in Michigan in front of everyone in that scene. We all knew when Danton came here that he wasn't going to be here for 20+ years like Doug Ross. We all knew that he wanted the State job. He came through Huntsville a couple of months later — he still owns a house here, and he brought the kids down to visit friends — and when I asked him about Anastos getting the job over him, the wince was all I needed to know. I can't quote body language. But shoot, I wanted the job for him, because I wanted him to coach at his alma mater until he got tired of coaching.

So your point is ... what, exactly?

Re: LSSU hockey 2013-14

Phil Hously a recent candidate to be assistant coach for the Buffalo Sabers has taken a position as AC with the Nashville Pretadors.

Hously is former player and captain of the Sabers.
It's Housley (with an e), and he's from St Paul where you claim to be from.

This chat about Roque staying or going is more fun than the entire second half of the season was with Lake State.

Yes, Blashill is still on the radar for Buffalo. But Housley is off the radar for the Sabers. So far as i can tell we STILL have two Assistant Coach openings with Buffalo Sabers under Ron Rolston HC.

Blashill is under contract to the Wings. The only thing tying him to Buffalo is speculation by a blogger.
