Ledyard Bank Tournament - Dartmouth/UNH/UMass/Bemidji - Sun/Mon Dec 30/31

Re: Ledyard Bank Tournament - Dartmouth/UNH/UMass/Bemidji - Sun/Mon Dec 30/31

Congrats to Dartmouth, you deserved the win. It's good to see 2 teams from NH with potential this year, and the way the Big Green played last night, perhaps you have the greater chance to go further.

Way to go UNH with their win earlier this evening. Now, come on Big Green... Win this thing!

Never in my life have I ever seen a worse game by the ref's. There is no way that they call this game without having money on it some how, some way. What a shame. The two ref's should not be allowed to call a pond hockey game. I hope they made a ton of money in Vegas with their bets. No offence to Umass, those kids played well tonight. But, I have seen it all and there had to have been money on this for the ref's to have called the game in the way they did. Unreal.

Wow, what a rough game -- didn't watch/listen to it, but the score sheet shows 87 total penalty minutes, with 4 - 10 min. majors and 3 - 5 min. majors, along with a slew of 2 min. minors. Congrats for the victory, UMASS. (Of UNH's 3 losses to date, 2 were to UMASS and Dartmouth, the finalists in this year's Ledyard tourney. Not that that means much.)

I don't like to complain about the officials but for Dartmouth to have about half as many penalty minutes in one game as they had in their first 12 combined is ridiculous. Was also watching the online feed rather than in person so its tough to see whether or not the penalties that were called were legitimate but the announcer also stated that it was the worst officiated game he had seen in his six years working for the Big Green and it sounded like Coach Gaudet wasn't pleased with the officiating either.

However, if Dartmouth had played as well as they had last night at even strength they still should have easily beaten this team. Morris, after probably his best game of the season last night, had one of his worst. He didn't do a good job controlling or covering rebounds and looked shaky throughout the game. I'd be surprised if Grant doesn't get at least one start next weekend. Offensively, there were plenty of scoring chances generated throughout the game by all four lines that we failed to capitalize on.

A bright spot I thought was the play of Neiley. He was all over the place and drew three or four of the UMass penalties with his efforts.

If the team plays as well as they did last night this coming Friday, they should have a great chance of beating another top ten team, but if they play as poorly as they did tonight, they should be easily beaten. Hopefully the former.

Congrats to UMass on winning the tourney and good luck the rest of the way.

Wow, BC gets blown out by Gophers and finishes weekend 2 pts up in PWR. Quite the suite of holiday tournament upsets this year.

I watched the game and I can not believe what I saw. A total joke. These teams were not at each other like some rivals with the usual after the play ends and some scraps. This was legal hits and then turning into something else. Never, never....Have I seen this before. There was money involved some how. I hope the ref's brother-in-law made a killing on the game. It is just sad that they could not have called an honest hockey game. Both teams lost out on that. Sorry to Dartmouth for getting totally F-ed tonight. But also and again, Umass played well and congrad's for your win. Nothing against Umass, this was all about the ref's and how poorly they did. Unless, your are their brother-in-law that hit the winnings on this "game"

Interestingly enough, it was the same group of officials that had done the game the previous night and did a great job allowing the teams, for the most part, to just play and, as a result, it was a great game to watch. Tonight's game was just painful to watch even online. I'm glad I wasn't there to see that train wreck in person.

Re: Ledyard Bank Tournament - Dartmouth/UNH/UMass/Bemidji - Sun/Mon Dec 30/31

(I'm paraphrasing here what I said on another board)

Congrats to UMass on the win, as I admit: they deserved it.

I agree with others on this board, the officiating was terrible in this game. As the matter of fact, this was the second* worst officiated game I saw at Thompson Arena. The refs lost control of the game early, there were numerous tussles after the play stopped (which I don't understand: we aren't rivals, as we seldom even play hockey against each other). Curiously, the penalties benefited UMass both in quantity of time (17:34 of PP time for UMass vs. 6:40 PP time for Dartmouth) and timeliness of the penalties, as they seemed to be called whenever Dartmouth was getting into rhythm.

The key to UMass win (besides help from the refs) was physicality. They seemed to out-hustle Dartmouth to the puck a lot (then again, having to kill those penalties had something to do with that)...

Anyway, I do hope that Dartmouth learns how to play against physical teams and that UMass does decent for the remainder of the year so that this does not become the loss that prevents Dartmouth from getting into the NCAAs yet again...

*I was at the first one with my girlfriend, and we had a great view at the Dartmouth net-- the puck was in our goalie's glove, and there was a piece of stick in the net. It was called a no-goal by the ref next to the play. The other ref, Benedetto, who was away from the play, called it a BC goal after a curious brief consultation with Jerry York. That was the game where I lost all respect for Jerry York. Prior to that I thought of him as being a decent individual.

Great matchup coming up Friday — #8 Dartmouth at #5 Quinnipiac, to be televised on NESN.
