Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

Why did Roque pull Kapalka and put Murdock in ? Isn't it important to keep your better goalie in to try and win the game . Why would a coach pull his starting goalie and put in a goalie with poor numbers on the season . Didn't roque keep Murdock in when Ravn was his backup to try and keep the team in the game when the game was all but over in the third period a couple weeks ago . Roque doesn't switch goalies when the game is all but over but switches goalies when the Lakers still have a chance of winning and he puts in a goalie with a 891 save per centage and an almost 4 goals against. Why the hell do you take out your starting goalie and put in a guy who has horrible numbers and can't win.
I'm just about to head out the door for home. I'll have something to say on this later today.

Is the arena as empty as it looks on video highlights of the game ?

I didn't listen to the game but did Kapalka injure himself? I did follow it on the the web and thought it looked like they had a chance. I will really be rooting for them next weekend; but I too think they will be running into a Ferris St. team that not only wants to keep up Minn. Mak. but they want to prove something and want to go into the playoffs on a winning note.

Soft goal. Murdock played well to finish it up. Attendance was listed as 1600+ but there were a lot of empty seats. Students gone on break and the Eagles were at home also.

1650 was official, but more like 1100 or 1200 actually at the game. I believe the Soo Eagles had a home game at Pullar and Sault High had a playoff game at Gaylord. Probably lost almost 1000 people due to that, not to mention Spring Break so only had a couple students.

Re: Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

I stayed around the rink for the seniors ceremony after the game. I had never been around to do that before. It was quite nice.

Here's what I heard after the game about Kapalka being pulled. He wasn't hurt. It had nothing to do with seniors weekend. Roque didn't like the way he was playing so he pulled him. Doesn't make much sense because the whole team played poorly on Friday and that would have been the logical time to pull Kapalka. He seemed off his angles a bit and didn't look good on the puck action around the net, especially wrap arounds. A couple of soft goals. It would have been a good game to pull Kapalka and put Murdock in (or even Ravn but that was never going to happen) especially being seniors weekend. I thought Kapalka played pretty solid on Saturday. He got beat by some good well placed shots, one of which was well screened. He had good positioning. I heard that Roque thought he was dropping down too soon on some of the shots. A couple of goals did hit the high corners of the net. I don't think he went down too early. The Mankato guys were in fairly close and that's when a goalie normally does drop down more so than shots from further out. I wasn't close enough to the bench to hear Roque yelling out at Kapalka during play, but evidently some people were. Roque was yelling out "******* stand up!" (Think of a word that starts with F and ends with ing). He figured Kapalka was ignoring him so he pulled him. As was mentioned, he didn't get pulled after a goal. Given the importance and closeness of the game, the move doesn't make much sense. Murdock didn't give up any goals so it worked out, but it still doesn't make any sense. I think Kapalka was playing the way he thought best.

So the coach changed goalies. The backup doesn't give up a goal, and the "I never scored a goal above bantam" crowd still complains. I was at both games. KK fought the puck all weekend long.

Roque has to go. Roque is Borek the second.

Re: Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

What an odd, sad weekend.

First, yet ANOTHER home weekend on a school holiday.
Second, sorry -- but the goalie moves this weekend just seemed weird.
Third -- The difference between a good team and a not-very-good team was shown on the ice this weekend for all to see.
Fourth -- The weekend had the feel of Roque's last stand. It was so ugly Friday that the 500 or so people who were actually in the stands seemed more bored than usual. How can the Coach survive? The team which held such promise has yet again failed to mature, failed to grow, failed to adjust, failed to get faster and better. The LSSU team in October is gone, replaced by a team of tired players who have every appearance of having tuned out their coach.
Fifth: This was a valid point LAST summer -- but it needs repeating again: how can the administration keep the coach who seems incapable of putting butts in seats?

Lastly, I support LSSU win or lose. I hate NMU, win or lose. If that tweaks a few fair-weather Marquette or NMU fans -- all the better. But I would suggest that idle and nasty comments about poster's hockey resume on this board is likely to make the accuser sound pretty silly. There are some very experienced hockey people who post on this simple little LSSU forum. There are some rubes, too. But more likely than not, many of the regular posters herein have played, or been very closely involved in hockey for a long time. So in sum: Northern sucks. Northern fans suck. You can't like Northern and LSSU at the same time -- its a law. Sincerely -- Lakerblue.

I don't think anyone in attendance would have thought KK was playing bad enough to warrant getting benched. It was definitely quiet enough in the rink at the 10 min mark of the 3rd so I'm sure people could hear Roque screaming if they wanted to. If what you just told us is what actually happened , I think most of us will agree that it is absolute madness. Apparently Roque is at the point of trying anything because he just doesn't have the answer for any situation anymore.

Re: Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

I'l agree with you for Friday, but not for Saturday.

Even Friday, the Laker defense let Margonari skate right in close on two of those goals and he just blasted it right by KK. He can only wear pads so big. Fighting it? I wouldn't say it was his best but certainly not his worst. The SOG were 40-14. He was probably wore down in the 3rd because the puck never left our zone for the first 2 periods. KK is the last person I would blame out there. If it were anyone else, we probably would have lost 10-0.

Re: Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

As much as it pains me to say this, LSSU will not make the playoffs. NMU will win at least one at Alabama-Huntsville, most likely 2. The Lakers need at least one win on the road at Ferris, who is hungry to finish the season strong. Can we be hungrier? Yes. But based on current results, it's not looking good.

Know what you're posting about. I've probably been to more Laker games than you. Ever been to a Laker Frozen Four? How many road games have you been to this year? Ever played at the Pullar? Tweak the NMU fans all you like. I tweaked a few of them during our Friday game there. They tweaked back on Saturday. What? You didn't like that one refuted your bus comments with facts? By the way, how many goals did you score above Bantam?
As for poster resumes, there are plenty of very knowledgeable posters here. It's also very easy to tell who the ones who don't know a lot but rattle their keyboards like they do are. Usually they're the ones whose arse becomes most chapped over a comment like the "bantam" one. The ones who do make insightful posts know such comments aren't meant for them.

The Lakers are not a very good hockey team. Only Huntsville has given up more goals than the Lakers and that pretty much sums it up. Next seasons pre-season pick for the Lakers will be 9th . All you Roque supporters want to see more fans at the games . Have Roque put out a winning team. Even Miami is now falling short of filling up their arena with Miami being in last .

Typical Spring Break attendance.

The school needs to make major changes to the program right from the ground up. Treat it like a D-I program.
