Re: Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

If the Lakers sweep Ferris this weekend, they will have achieved a .500 conference record for the first time with Roque as coach. (8 years in the CCHA and 1 in the WCHA.)

Probably enough to bring back Roque for next year if that did happen. If not, hopefully they can make it to the Final Five if they somehow squeak into the playoffs. If none of those two things happen, Roque should not be welcomed back next seaosn.

It's fun to dream.

I wish they guys luck this weekend and hopefully they can take at least 1 game. But from what we have seen over the last 9 years I know of no reason why he should be back.

I still plan to watch this weekend's series, but my optimism has run out. I'm just waiting for next year. The freshman showed some promise last saturday. Maybe a new coach with a new system would be interesting enough to keep czuczman on board?

Re: Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

and it's still worth mentioning that Globke is the most exciting freshman we've had in a decade. I just did a quick browse of the stats, and he's already put up better single season numbers than any Laker in the last four years. The only one close is Monardo's final season in which he equaled Globke's point total but took five more games, 3x times as many shots, and 3x as many penalties. His numbers probably beat out everybody back to atleast 98 or so, but I didn't care to browse the stats from so many losing seasons.

Not to be. Czuczman will be graduating this year. He had some college credits he brought with him from Junior hockey days and has been taking some summer classes also. He will be getting his degree and turning pro.

Re: Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

That's kind of you to say, Lakerblue. Wilkie was always fun to talk to, and his first few WSU teams were very good, but that faded away, and based on the comments one in-program person that I know gave me, I got the sense that Wilkie was just past his prime. Would he be a good person to rally donors, bring in good recruits, and train up an assistant to be his short-term replacement? Yeah, he would be.

I wonder if Chris Luongo would want to be one of his assistants again, but I do know that they really want to raise their boys here in Huntsville. I see his wife around town from time to time.

I think that you need a young coach. He may have been burned on college hockey in his one year at BG, but Dennis Williams was well-regarded here, and I always felt that he was our safety valve if Danton Cole left (as we knew that he would, but not where/when).

Do you have any player alumni with a coaching bent? (No, I don't expect Brian to join Ron as Rolstons Coaching Lakers) Could you pair a couple of young assistants with a name that gives you respect?

GFM <— wants a strong program in the Soo.

They'd also definitely be in the playoffs and potentially have home ice. I'm sure that I've said that in this thread before. It's still amazing to me.

GFM <— invites you to stop by the UAH thread to discuss the "Alabama" / "Huntsville" thing.

To think the way that the season started out and it comes down to the Lakers needing a sweep against a very tough and I'm sure focused Ferris State team that wants to get last weekend behind them.

I'm not to confident in Roque getting his first con. 500 record.

It would surprise pretty much everyone.

It's just a shame Roques teams just can't find consistent play. Year after year after year.

Maybe Roque himself isn't consistent in how he reacts to losses (and wins for that matter), and how he treats the players.

On a recruiting note, the D we had in for a visit a few weeks ago has committed elsewhere. We usually have pretty good luck getting commitments from kids that actually visit LSSU, but we've lost a couple of them this season. Roque thought we were going to get a LOI from a forward back in the early signing period in November but that kid committed somewhere else at the last minute.

If, as myself and others have speculated, the team is disenfranchised with Roque perhaps that is being communicated indirectly (and maybe even directly) during these recruiting visits, since the recruits hang around the team when they are there. A bad culture can be infectious and if the team can't pull it together to play inspired hockey, I highly doubt they are able to completely pull the wool over anybody's eyes off the ice, including recruits in for a visit. Now maybe in both instances those players simply decided to commit elsewhere for completely different reasons, but it's a question worth asking.

I think that in both cases we were recruiting these guys for next season, but they committed to other schools for the season after next. They could have played for the Lakers next season, but apparently chose to stay in Juniors for another year and play at other schools in 2 seasons. It probably didn't help that the D that visited came during one of our Saturday night losses (5-2 to Anchorage).

Re: Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

Lakers need a win or a tie PLUS a Bemidji or NMU loss to make the playoffs. I'm not counting on it.
