Re: Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

Both Michigan Tech and UAF have upcoming home series against UAH (Tech following a road series at BG), which figure to be 4 point sweeps for them. It's really important for the Lakers to sweep UAA the weekend after next, which is when they see their next action.

Sweeps of both UAA and UAH would be huge for the Lakers, although it's hard to tell what is going to happen at this point. There just isn't enough consistency in any portion of the Laker's game to say they can do it.

Re: Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

Murdock, prior to this season, is averaging .935 save percentage and 2.15 gaa at LSSU. I'd say that is pretty darn good. Unfortunately, I have no explanation as to what happened to him so far this year. It has been a completely different story.

Murdock only played in 10 games his first two seasons of college hockey. Only last year did he play in over 20 games and I believe the second half of the season he was allowing in more goals as the season neared the end. This season I would not call Murdock a good goalie. Unless he has a turn around ,his numbers won't improve by much.

Last week against Notre Dame ,Notre Dame scored 4 goals in a bit over 6 minutes in the third and the game was lost at that point. Why didn't Roque pull Murdock at that point and give Ravn some playing time ? The game was over. Murdock gave up 6 goals. Why the hell would you not give the back up some playing time? I also say bench Ciotti . twenty six games as a junior and he has one goal. Shake things up and move players in and out that are not producing

I think giving Ravn playing time is the last thing Roque wants to do. It would probably take an injury (or illness) to Murdock for Ravn to see any ice time. Although you normally don't want to leave your starting goalie in so long (too many goals) that he is embarrassed, I'm not sure that applies in the Lakers case. Maybe it does, but it might take a lot of goals to get to that point; 6 wasn't enough on Saturday.

If Ravn was the last goalie on the planet,I don't think Roque would use him.

Murdock gave up all 8 goals the Saturday game in Wisconsin and he wasn't pulled. Kapalka was the backup that game.

Ravn is now the backup with no experience. Murdock gets hurt and now Ravn is the starting goalie with no experience. Losing as they did in Notre Dame and Saturday night in Bowling Green. Pull the goalie who has already given up 6 goals in those two games and get Ravn in for some ice time. Those games were over and Murdock did not need to be there for the finish.

If Murdock gets hurt at this point, we'd be finished anyway. Even if Ravn had some experience, you can't expect a 3rd-string goalie to come in and carry this team like Kapalka was doing. Ravn would need a .GAA of 2 or better and a SV% of .920 plus for the Lakers to have a chance. It wouldn't be fair to Ravn for us to expect that from him with so little experience. With the way the defense has been giving up goals and the offense sputtering it'd be like feeding him to the wolves. UAH would be a great place to get him a game, but I would put every penny I own on that not happening.

I am just saying be fair to Ravn . Your starter is giving up 6 goals in a game that is over, get your backup in and give him that first hand look from the ice as he may have to step up in a game that is up for grabs.

Re: Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

A Roque fan said “when you fund the bottom of the barrel, you have the bottom of the barrel”. How much they fund is unknown, but we surely have the bottom of the barrel.

Roque won't let Ravn play as long as someone else can stand in the net, whether it hurts the team or not. Murdock and Kapalka becoming unavailable happened in the past and remains a possibility and Roque would then have to resort to using a life-raft he purposely sabotaged.
After being sidelined and bullied for three seasons, Ravn received no equipment this season and his ice time was brought down to one practice, when Murdock had class.
Roque prevented him from being on the senior picture - nobody knows why - and found a fifth goalie to make sure Ravn would have no chance playing.
Roque seems to have backed out a bit, probably under some pressure, but this just gives an insight of what kind of player management you get from the bottom of the barrel; needless to say it has a impact on the team.
The Kapalka example is irrelevant. There was no benefit for Kapalka to play in a such a chaos.

It would be unfair to have the same expectations as for a goalie receiving preferential treatment with a guaranteed game per week, but it would indeed be interesting to see what is left, because he still looks good at practice.

Roque is master at putting forward situations he has created as excuses, and is a genius at manipulating (not only players by the way) and playing in the players' head, but he is obviously at a loss to do it in a harmless or positive way. When players describe him as mad, crazy or insane, don’t expect respect, leadership or consistency.

For some reason opponent teams fortunately give away the Friday game, and start playing on Saturdays; one player scoring in his own net was apparently late at adjusting to the game plan.

You pay peanuts you get monkeys, but who said it has to be mean and nasty ?
What about a finding one who could learn and apply useful tricks and share them with players and fans, for the same price.

One thing to keep in mind about Ravn. Unlike the past couple of #3 goalies who played for the Lakers, one (Edmondson) who played only high school hockey in Traverse City, and one (Ciccone) who played AAA midget hockey in far Northern Ontario but no Junior hockey, Ravn had very good goalie stats playing Junior hockey for Ottawa of the CCHL. So if Ravn were thrown into a game situation due to injury/illness to Murdock, yes he is likely to be a bit rusty, but he certainly has far better credentials than our past couple of #3 goalies.

Re: Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

I am glad Ravn stayed and got his education . Respect for Roque as a coach doesn't exist with me. Hell.pay me half what they pay Roque and I will stop by the dressing room before every game and tell the players to chase the puck and if possible, make something happen.

Year 9 under Jim Roque will be the best one yet for Lake Superior!! This coach is fortunate to have such loyal supporters on here and up at the college, who are committed to him long term.

I see what you're saying. It is pretty common practice everywhere else but here.

I think, at this point, we would all be interested in finding out what Ravn has to offer. I in no way, shape, or form would have the same expectations for Ravn as I did for KK. KK basically carried this team through poor offensive output and a shoddy PK. Murdock is having trouble doing that and you can see the results. Not that I blame him; you can't expect to put that kind of pressure on your goalie night in, night out. That's just not fair.

Roque has himself in quite a pickle. If he plays Ravn and he plays excellent, it'll make Roque look pretty foolish. If he plays him and he gives up 6 goals to either UAA or UAH, it'll make him look pretty foolish. So his best bet from an image standpoint is to not play him at all. Not that his image is real great at the moment :D

We're just not going to hang a six-spot on anyone this season.

The goalie thing you guys have going on????
What happened to Kevin Kapalka?
And who is (sorry haven't seen a first name) Ravn?
Can the Seawolves plan on seeing Kevin Murdock start both games?

Kapalka (Lakers best goalie) has a groin injury. It happened a couple of weeks ago against Bemidji. He could be done for the season, although that isn't certain yet. Murdock will play both games against the Seawolves unless he is injured (or ill). Niels-Erik Ravn is the #3 goalie, had very good stats in Juniors, but has never been given much of a chance by coach Roque. The only game time he has seen (other than in exhibition games) is a couple of mop up 3rd periods on the road when the Lakers were getting trounced.

Re: Lake Superior State Hockey Lakers 2013-2014 (part II)

The old saying, "ya get what ya pay for" unfortunately, applies to Jim Roque. He is an "adequate" or "good" Head Coach, but not a higher level D1 Coach. Lake State can't or won't pay a big time money to bring in a big time coach so must do with Coach Roque. There's nothing wrong with that - just bite the bullet and accept it. A HC like Roque highly depends on recruiting assistants to drag blue chippers to the Soo to see the program and meet Coach Roque to close the deal. Unfortunately, compared to Minny, ND's (Notre Dame & North Dakota), MSU, and, of course, the Wolverines without even looking back East, the Lake state "scene" falls short and too many blue chippers say "thanks, but no thanks" and move on. The days of a hi-pot prospect (Brian Rolston) chosing Lake State in part cuz his older brother (Ron) is a Lake State assistant are long gone.................
