Jersey etiquette

Wondering

Registered User
I will be traveling to D.C. and have the rare (for me) opportunity to see an NHL game. On the way, I'll stop in Anchorage for the Brice Hockey Classic, where I'd love to wear my Alaska jersey.

So, when I attend the Capitals game, is it a) Embarrassing, b) Neutral, or c) Good Publicity to wear a college jersey?

Re: Jersey etiquette

It's embarrassing to be seen in a Alaska jersey whether it be at a game, a mall, a funeral or anywhere else.

I've seen every jersey under the sun at NHL and College games. Wear what you want.

Re: Jersey etiquette

Wear it, it shows you're a fan of the sport and really want to be there, even if it's not the home team.

Re: Jersey etiquette

I always wear a college jersey to NHL games. NHL fans can be snooty about the college game (the kind of people who go for the fights), so be prepared for a few looks and maybe a comment or two. Particularly if you are in Washington and wearing a jersey from Alaska.

You will see a lot of non-NHL jerseys at the VZ Center, usually for AHL and more obscure leagues. A friend of mine always wears his jersey for the Kazan Ak Bars of the Kontinental Hockey League - that one always gets a few comments.

I try to wear a college jersey with some kind of tie-in to the home team. BC jersey for Chuck Kobasew to a Bruins game, etc.

Wear what you want, but you may take your life into your hands if you wear a Wings sweater in Chicago. ;) I've worn Sioux hockey jerseys/gear to Predators, Blues, Stars and 'Hawks games and have never had any problems. If anything the name/logo get some positive comments.

Re: Jersey etiquette

Going to a game in DC, you can wear a jersey of just about any time aside from one of the team they're playing, a Pens jersey, a Flyers jersey (especially) or a Rangers jersey. Obviously if you wear another NHL team jersey, you'll hear crap, but if you wear a college one, you'll get questions and possibly compliments.

Re: Jersey etiquette

It's the Devils. None of their fans are going to know about college.

Oh wait, wait... you meant jersey etiquette...

I'm sure you wouldn't want to wear a Habs jersey in Toronto or Boston, an Icelanders jersey in Manhattan, a Leafs jersey in Montreal, or a Flames jersey in Edmonton (or around Boosh), but a college jersey? Go for it.

I wore a Rangers jersey there to one of the playoff games against the Rangers and didn't even get that much grief for it, I think the fans there are pretty tame.

Wear it - you just never know. We were decked out in Cornell gear at a Habs game one time, and unbeknownst to us, Cornell grad Ryan Hughes had just been called up for his first NHL game. When the guy standing next to us saw our gear, he started chatting with us - turned out to be Hughes's best friend from high school in Montreal, and Ryan had gotten him a ticket at the last minute when he found out he was playing. Our chatting very nearly led to an invitation to hang out with the team after the game - he just wasn't sure he had the power to invite people...

Re: Jersey etiquette

Be prepared for the "Do you know Sarah Palin?" questions. But go ahead, it is a pretty clueless crowd when it comes to college hockey.

i wanted to say that but i was at work at the time... expect a lot of ribbing... from people who should know better and should be more mature. Either be able to take it or have a few one liners ready to deflate their ego.

Re: Jersey etiquette

Acceptable:

Wearing a college jersey to a pro game.
Wearing a pro jersey to a college game.
Wearing any baseball hat of any team to any game (without jersey).

Not acceptable:

Wearing a 3rd party team pro jersey to a pro game not involving either team (aka someone wearing a Yankee jersey to a Red Sox-Orioles game in Baltimore where you're just begging to be an *** clown. Same holds for every team). If you feel the need to represent your team then go with an understated hat and just be happy that they let you into the stadium.

Wearing a jersey & hat combo representing pro teams from 2 completely different cities and/or areas.

I have some friends who play in one of the local adult hockey leagues, their team is the Ak Bars, and they have/wear the three different Ak Bar jerseys for their league games. I should have known better than to be surprised at the jerseys people link on this site.

Really? Historically, half the fans at a Flyers-Caps game have been road-trippers from Philly. Maybe the Caps actually have fans now?

I've seen various college jerseys at Flyers games, too, including one from NoDak, as well as the occasional international one. Go for it.
