is there a better college hockey forum than USCHO?

Re: is there a better college hockey forum than USCHO?

Oh, and thanks for being patient. There isn't a whole lot of money in college hockey and we're doing what we can with what we have.

One other thing ... a large portion of the problems early this season have been with third-party software, causing us to have to fix, rewrite or replace a bunch of code. None of those issues revealed themselves until we were under the load of being in production. We really don't have the resources to do as much load testing as we'd like. It's also hard to gauge the impact of certain games, or when certain teams are on the road and programs with huge fan bases are online when they might not be otherwise. We also have times with huge spikes in traffic. Late Friday and late Saturday are two of them, but the third highest is lunch time on Mondays.

So ... be assured we're not ignoring issues. We're doing what we can with what we've got until we can do more.

Thanks for the explanation. It also is one of my favorite sites and it was getting frustrating with the performance. All I ask is that you keep us informed when there are issues.

Add in the fact that they put BU on the front page every 3 days (I know Urton is a BU guy and they have well over a handful of other BU grads on the staff but it's disgraceful)

don't look now ;)

Yep, not a surprise at all. Of course, mindless hillbillies like GoUNH will just think that if anyone that mentions this coincidence is just whining. Nevermind the fact that they have a reliable, primary photog that does basically BC and BU games almost exclusively (and she is a great photog for the record). I'm sure a stock photo of UNO or Dean Blais from their athletic department wouldn't have been as good of a choice!!!!!!!!!

That being said, all biases by choice aside, good luck to the USCHO staff with their technical problems. Not an easy fix, clearly. Keep working the problem.

Who cares what photos are on the front page? Seriously!

Better? It depends upon your priorities; obtaining up-to date results and news, or speculating about future events, or expressing personal opinions about players, teams, fans, and officials. Sorta like whether you prefer pundits or journalists.

Oh, God.

I thought it worked pretty good last night.

Some Perspective:

As a frequent business traveller, I spent a ton of time on airplanes, and listen to lots of people complaining about late flights, no overhead space. no legroom, surly flight attendants, etc. To me, I am willing to overlook all the complaints and realize that for a few hundred bucks, you can step into an aluminum tube and come out in another city, far far away in a few hours. Jet travel is still something of a MIRACLE to me, and without it, I could not do my job well, nor could I enjoy the lifestyle I have without it, nor the amazing enrichment of global vacation travel that being a frequent domestic flier enables.

USCHO is a lot like jet travel. I, like many old farts, remember the pre-internet days of calling press boxes and radio stations for score updates. TV broadcasts were rare. The NCAA's were shown tape delayed and regionals, not at all. There was no way to ever see out of town newspaper stories. There were newsletters and magazines that came well after the fact. I remember that the best way to meet opposing fans from around the country was at the NCAAs, where you had to make a real in-person effort.

USCHO changed the game. We now have a national game for those who care enough to seek it out beyond their home rink. I've made many friends here, and we all share the common bond of the die-hard fan. So what if the site doesn't load sometimes? It comes back at some point, and we resume our passion. Like the occasional broken airplane, it gets fixed, and eventually we travel on to our destination...USCHO, like the internet and jet travel, is a miracle.

You should probably ask if a study has been conducted.

Re: is there a better college hockey forum than USCHO?

Prior to finding USCHO, I was lost when it came to getting up to date news about DU. I moved to Maine in 2000 and desperately tried to stay in touch with the program. In 2004 I discovered this site and along with the score updates, I am totally up to speed with the Pios. I too have made some great friends though this fan forum, it's so cool to meet them in person at the rink!! Anyway, to sum it up, I would be lost without this website. Maybe it's time to *"cough it up choppers!"

I post regularly on a fishing site that uses vbulletin software and has nearly 40,000 members. If the owner had not upgraded his server he would be in the same boat.

Sometimes, those aluminum tubes explode or fall out of the sky!

Don't try to bring perspective into this. Everybody these days wants everything RIGHT NOW! Or we stamp our feet and threaten to find something better or faster.

Seriously though, you are correct. College hockey has changed a ton and I believe that this site is a big part of it. How else would I find anything out about what's going on out east? Not that I care mind you as everyone knows that good hockey is not played east of Lake Michigan. :p

Re: is there a better college hockey forum than USCHO?

Whaaaaaaaaa! What a crybaby. BU was #1 in the Nation for a couple of weeks. I guess your Eagles being on the front page for nearly the entire offseason wasn't enough. Boo hoo.

I demand for AHA coverage on the front page. Alabama Huntsville deserves respect too

Re: is there a better college hockey forum than USCHO?

This place, along with helping me get into the sport, has introduced me to many a person that have become my friend. While I'm one of the nitpickers, kinda (just gimme smooth operation on weekend nights), for the most part this site is run well, especially considering the resources. Love the passion amongst the runners of the site, the diehard/knowledgable users of the site, and the fact that it can be free if you want it to be.

I'll deal with bumps and bruises, as long as there is no death. I guess that's the simplest way to put it, in my eyes.
