Re: Irish hockey: Straight Inta the Off-Season

The time to start speculating about captains, break-out seasons, fantastic freshmen and so on is fast approaching. I am climbing my first mountain next week (I say "first" as if there will be a 2nd--yeah, right.) and will have lots of time to ponder these things. I may come back clear-headed and with great guesses. I could fall off the side and break my leg.
So, Mr. JJfP and I were a third of the way into our climb when I started pondering captains. I got as far as "...Anders Lee..." when 2 things occurred to me:

1. Climbing a mountain is the hardest thing I have ever attempted. Ever.

2. The mountain appears to be on fire. No really.

So, the mountain and the surrounding area were evacuated. Within 12 hours, the fire had grown to 2000 acres and was 0% contained. Good thing I had on my bucket list, "Climb a mountain" instead of "Summit a mountain" because that's it for me.

I'm going to stay below 9,000 feet above sea level (the altitude we made) unless I'm in a plane.

Hey guys,

Looks like I'm going to have split fandom from now on since I'll be at Notre Dame for the next 5+ years for grad school. I'll definitely be at every game as I'm a college hockey addict and have already added an ND hockey jersey to my collection. Please don't kick me out! J/K, looking forward to Oct!

I can attest that the ND fandom is welcoming of such divided loyalties. :)

(You may find that your priorities start to become a little muddled when you go to every ND game, though it'll probably be easier for you with BU likely to be good for the foreseeable future.)

Yeah I thought of that already. I'll wear my BU jersey when they come to town next year and later, but I'll likely know a lot more about ND's players by then than BU's...

Stop over and say, "Hey!"

Captains for 2012-13 are a hard choice this year. I'd go with Sam Calabrese, Anders Lee and Bryan Rust.

Re: Irish hockey: Straight Inta the Off-Season

I'd make Anders the sole captain and make Calabrese and Nick Lawson the Alternates.
I assume you mean Nick Larson...and I for one would veto that in a heartbeat. Too hot-headed. Makes really bad decisions every game that puts the team in a bind.

I agree with Anders Lee being the one and only C. Two guys wearing the C is a mistake. I will be very interested to see if he comes out of his slump or if the weight of the letter keeps him hitting posts. Sam Calabrese is a good choice for A. He's a great play-maker, level-headed and rarely (if ever) does dumb things. I wanna pick Stephen Johns as the other A, but I wonder if his emotions will be a hurdle. If not, he's the other A. If they do, Steven Summerhays would be my back-up.

Yes I did mean Nick Larson. ****, and I knew I got it wrong. It just didn't sound right. I was thinking of Lawson Arena I guess.

The reason I think he should be an alternate is because I keep hearing how he can get in people's faces and I think that'll be important. I think Calabrese (and possibly even Robbie Russo) should take the other alternate captaincy because he would run the defense.

Much as I like him, I would also have to veto Nick, for the same reasons as JJfP. He plays with his emotions at the top all the time. That's something that is good some of the time, but when it's bad, it's really bad. Too many times last year, we saw that emotion work detrimentally for the team. I also thought about Stephen Johns as an A, but in some respects, I discarded him for the same reason that I discarded Anders last year. His overall personality makes him an infectious leader, but I'd have to wonder if the weight of the responsibility wouldn't affect him the same way that I feel it affected Anders. Some people lead better behind the scenes and I think Anders and Stephen both fit in to this category. In Sam and Bryan, I see the same level headed, even keeled, workman-like quality that I saw in people like Dave Poulin, Garrett Regan, Christian Hansen, Kyle Lawson, Aaron Gill, Joe Lavin. Even keeled. As for Stephen Summerhays, I live in mortal fear that we will see the rotating door goalie system again this year, and a captain not on the ice cannot be very effective.

Re: Irish hockey: Straight Inta the Off-Season

Christian Hanson has signed a two-way with the Bruins.

I'm still bummed that he couldn't make it with the Leafs. :(

Yeah, my #20 Hanson Leafs jersey isn't quite as cool now! But I like him with Boston. That's a better fit than Washington. He would have languished in Hershey. Plus, he can be reunited with Calle Ridderwall, assuming Ridderwall stays in Providence.

On current player news, (returning to the captaincy discussion) Sam Calabrese will "represent" ND at the press conference Wednesday about the outdoor spectacle. I assume that is a good indication he will be the letter-wearing senior. Just so long as it's an A and (I will reiterate NDF27's plea) Anders Lee wears the only C.

Hmm... Now to guess who will have the breakout season...

It looks like Ridderwall will be playing for Düsseldorf in the DEL next season.
