I know the issue that led Gillies to look elsewhere from NU was there being no room there this fall (due in part to the unexpected announcement by incumbent starter Rawlings that he would be returning for his senior season). If he were coming to ND, would it be this fall or next?

I believe it would be this year because he's already 18 and will graduate this year. He has said, though, that he's 50-50 about going the major Junior route. I think he's just keeping his options open. I doubt he comes to Notre Dame.

Riley Sheahan was signed by the Wings to a three year deal entry level deal.
His chances of playing next season would be small barring some real difficulties form both incumbent netminders. The following season his odds would improve a great deal, since we'll need to have a backup committed for 2013-14. He's young but has played 2 seasons in the USHL. They have an age limit to be drafted, but do they have a limit on games or seasons?

Doc Emerick and Eddie Olczyk gave props to the coaching staff here and even referred to Sheahan as an amateur dentist.
He's playing (wing) today! First shift he took a 4 minute HS penalty for knocking a few teeth out of Hawks guy Hayes. Hey, if he had to break teeth at least it was a former BC player...

I wonder how hard he's being pushed to commit to the Irish? If true, his comments mean Notre Dame has a spot on the team saved for him. NHL Central Scouting has a fairly high opinion of Gillies I believe, so he probably has decent potential. Not that the NHL draft is an accurate predictor of success at any level of course but he's probably going to be an NHL draft pick, something that neither Johnson or Summerhays is. FWIW, drafted goalies don't really want to be "depth" guys.
As things stand now he likely wouldn't play next season (2 upperclass incumbent starters in front of him). He hopefully would be a little used back-up as a sophomore (ideally Summerhays would have cemented himself as an everyday guy by his senior year). So he'd have to be willingly realistic about getting little playing time for two years at Notre Dame. Unless something is going on with the current rotation of netminders that we know nothing about.
If he does come to Notre Dame I imagine there will have to be some work going on behind the scenes to keep everyone focused on the right things. Like trophies and banners.

If Gillies wants to go to Quebec because of Patrick Roy he'll be making a mistake because Roy will be the head coach for the Montreal Canadiens next year. He'll be stuck in Quebec City with all the frenchies forever ineligible to play college hockey after that.

I see this as the same scenario with Jared Tinordi. Notre Dame is leverage for a better position (read: money) for up north. Not too informative, but since PC is now in the mix with Canadian Juniors, my skepticism of him choosing ND is growing by leaps and bounds as Providence will be in need of a goalie (they have two goalies returning who did not play at all and are question marks as starters), so his playing chances are greatly increased there.

He gave up 3 goals out of 30 shots and I, too, am becoming increasingly skeptical that he's coming to Notre Dame because after I wished him good luck and told him I hoped to see him play many games at the Compton Family Ice Arena he stopped following me on twitter. That can't be a good sign.

Or you could look at it that he doesn't want to court what could be seen as unacceptable contact by the NCAA. That said, I suspect you are correct.

I'm beginning to think that it was just a situation where he visited Notre Dame and it became the "favorite." You see this with football recruiting all the time. He plans on visiting PC and Quebec soon, I suspect our chances will greatly diminish even further after those.
I wouldn't hold my breath with this kid. Even though sitting out a year and working with the trainers here at Notre Dame might be best for him, I don't think he's thinking that way. Let's just stick with Summerhays, let's turn the team over to him fully.

CFIA is a gorgeous facility, and he'd be dumb not to take ND's offer, but what do I know about how a 20-something year old thinks?
His game is good but for a better part of the season our D has sucked wind and gave up 38-40+ SOG/game ... no goalie can hold that off on his own. For awhile (Nov-Jan) you could tell it took him a few minutes to get his head in the game: opposing teams had the most success scoring in the opening 2 minutes of every period. Guess that's a maturity thing he's going to have to work on.

This is completely off-topic, but if anyone in the area likes rootsy Americana-type music, one of my favorite bands, Hoots and Hellmouth is coming to this area for the first time (they are a Philly band) and will be playing in a new club, Ignition Music Garage in Goshen Friday, May 18th. Highly recommend 'em.
