Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

Perspective time for those like me (who lament Anders Lee's goal-scoring drought, think about that 4-game skid and have nothing better to do now that finals are complete and grades are in).

Looking at stats from the first half of last season and comparing them to the first half of this season brought some pleasant surprises my way.

Last year's 1st half record was 11-6-2 overall (.631 win %) and 9-4-1 in the CCHA (.678 win %). This year's 1st half record is 11-6-3 overall (.625) and 8-3-3 in the league (.678).
Last year's 1st half GF was 68 and GA was 55 in 19 games. This year's 1st half GF is 60 and the GA is also 55, but in 20 games.

Last year's 1st half PP stood at 15%. This year's 1st half PP is a bit better at 20%.
Last year's 1st half PK was 87.8%. This year's PK is only slightly worse at 84.5%.

Riley Sheahan and Patrick Gaul are leagues ahead of the scoring pace they were on last year.
T.J. Tynan, Billy Maday, Sean Lorenz, Bryan Rust, Sam Calabrese and Jeff Costello are slightly ahead of the scoring pace they were on last season.
Anders Lee and Stephen Johns are scoring at the exact same pace as last season.
Only David Gerths, Nick Larson and Mike Voran are slightly below the pace from last year. Gerths should have 4 points to maintain his pace from last season. He hasn't registered a point yet. Larson should have 8 to be on a par with last season; he has 5. Voran should have 8, but is close with 7 points thus far.

So while some of us have thought parts of this season a riddle, I've learned that a better conundrum would be to ponder why kamikaze pilots wore helmets. Fa la la la la, la la la laa.

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

This is excellent JJFP, I was actually wondering this myself (where we compared with last year). I noticed we were about equal in overall wins/points, but this is a good breakdown. I guess we have a lot to be optimistic about going into the second half, but it just goes to show how further ahead we would have been without that losing streak at the end.

Live and learn I guess. At least we know we are capable of doing better than last year, even considering how well we did last year. We're almost a championship caliber team, IMO. The problem last year was never that we weren't good enough, we were good enough. The problem last year was that we never finished strong enough (ie, had we won our last game we would have won the CCHA outright, we lost; after getting to the Joe for the CCHA final four we played like crap and lost to Miami; after winning the northeastern regionals in the NCAA tourney and making it to the frozen four for the 2nd time ever in school history, we play like crap and lose to Duluth, etc.). I'm afraid we have the same problem this year.

If we had won even 3 out of those last 4, we'd likely be number one in the CCHA and/or the NCAA going into the break. Last year being #2 in the CCHA and #6 nationally was considered incredible considering what expectations were at the beginning of the season. This year, we should consider it not good enough.

Let's do better.

How tough could it be? Those folks are all Soldiers. ;) Yes, I am kidding. :D

Jackson seems to be all over the map when it comes to team bonding. Bowling, camping trips, boxing, now simulated military training exercises. The latter seems to be fitting given Jackson's nature and personality. Don't you get the sense looking at him that he perhaps missed his calling as an officer in the United States Army? He's like the no-nonsense Colonel in any war movie you've ever seen.

So, will BU have anyone left on the team by the time New Year's Eve rolls around?

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

Just a heads up that Versus will be showing a special on ND hockey ("Onward to Victory") after they broadcast the New Year's Eve ND-BU game. My DVR is set to record both.

Well, JJ does resemble a well known Marine and actor, Col. Dale Dye. :)

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

This is one of the few New Year's Eves I'm truly looking forward to. I get to root for my team and then come back home to watch a t.v. special about them. Times Square? Ball drop? Fireworks? Meh. Give me hockey and shows about hockey any day.

Other than scoring leaders, ND and BU are remarkably similar. ND is 11-6-3 on the 4th strongest schedule and BU is 10-5-1 on the 5th toughest. Both are in the top 10 in PWR and both are in the top 10 in the rankings. ND and BU are both missing some parts to their lineups. To fill the gaps left by the WJC tourney, ND is led by Anders Lee (27 points) and Riley Sheahan (20 points). To fill the gaps left by other reasons better left unsaid, BU is led by Matt Nieto (16 pts.) and Alex Chiasson and Sahir Gill (each with 14).

Special teams are almost awash for the two teams. ND sits at 20% on the PP while BU is at 19.2%. ND's PK is 84.5% effective and BU's PK is 85.4% effective. Lee leads ND with 5 PPG's. Wade Megan leads the Terriers with 4 PPG's. ND is managing 3 GF while giving up 2.75. Waaaay too close for comfort. BU scores 3.38 GF and gives up 2.81.

Even the goalie stats are similar. Mike Johnson has a GA of 2.59 while Steven Summerhays has a GA of 2.77. Kieran Millan has a GA of 2.68 and Grant Rollheiser has a GA of 2.34. Each has looked good for their respective teams and each has looked not-so-good. It seems to be a better bet to buy a lottery ticket than to guess who will be in net (or how well that goalie will do).

Looking ahead to the exhibition game with the Russian Red Stars, I have watched only one of their games on this short tour of the US. They have played college teams and NAHL teams with equal success. They win every other game they play. They are decent on special teams and are averaging well over 3 goals/game while giving up 3 goals/game. They seemed to be a slow starting young team and after getting blown out in their first game (against NoDak), they have improved greatly. Lately, they have been sticking with Eugeny Ivannikov in net. Some of their young guns to watch include Ilya Zelenko, Artem Gareev and Alexander Titov.

Interesting tidbit that was revealed at last night's meet-n-greet with Coach Jackson and the captains, ND was invited to go to Russia to play the Red Stars, but declined, thus the home game against them. After Coach Jackson's revelation of his experiences with their airlines, I don't blame the University for the polite decline.

To quote Helen Keller, "Your success and happiness lie within you. Resolve to keep happy, and your joy shall form an invincible host against difficulties." Here's to ringing in the New Year in winning style.

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

Let's see now...

Get secondary scoring. Check. Check. Thank you Garrett Peterson and Jeff Costello.

Get freshmen involved. Check. Check. Check. Thank you Peter Schneider, Robbie Russo and again Peterson, each with 2 points.

Win face offs. Check. Thank you Riley Sheahan, Kevin Nugent, et al for winning 67.8% of the draws.

Score on the PP. Check. Check. Thanks you Anders Lee and Billy Maday.

Get a quality goaltender outing. Check. Thank you Steven Summerhays.

Get Anders Lee off the schneid. Check. And check. Finally!

Now that's how you ring in the New Year.

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

Congratulations on your five seconds of fame. :)

Costello's goal was amazing, and Maday's wasn't far off of that. Unfortunately, it looks like SportsCenter is forgoing a daily top 10 plays for a 2011 top 10 plays. :(

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

Rewatched "Onward to Victory" last night and noticed Mr. & Mrs. jjfp had "Cameo" appearances in the show. Even an out of state production company, figured out who the number one fan is, and included her in the production !!

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

The Russians almost gacked that one up...against the Canadians! The Russians ND played almost tied it up, but for the nice play of Mike Johnson and a few others like Anders Lee (too bad this one doesn't count), Mike Voran and even Nick Condon with a huge shot block to help in the effort. Good to see some shared ice time. Also nice to see Austin Wuthrich is healthy (and cantankerous) again!

Nice touch with the plaque and letter presented to the Russians along with the moment of silence for the 37 lost in September's plane crash.

And who composed the Russian anthem? Leo Tolstoy?! If it were a book, it would be a tome.

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

The university has confirmed that Charles "Lefty" Smith, longtime coach, passed away in his home this morning. Four great coaches now in heaven, Lefty, Amo Bessone, Herb Brooks and Bob Johnson. Heaven help any referee up there. RIP, Lefty.

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

Wow.

There was to be a dinner to honor him in Minny Friday. I expect it will now be to remember him. Many ND alums are going to attend, including Don Lucia.

I would add Murray Armstrong and John MacInnes to that list especially since they all coached together in the WCHA.

RIP Lefty

You'd need to add some Eastern coaches to that list ... Ned Harkness, Snooks Kelley, Cooney Weiland, Charlie Holt and, yes, Shawn Walsh.

Lefty Smith was captured by the TV cameras in the stands at the ND - BU game on Saturday. At least he lived to see the building of the new rink and was honored for his many years of service.
