Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

Unless you can go into the stadium, there's not much to see. On campus you must check out the Main Building (aka the Golden Dome), the Basilica and the Grotto (especially at night). Around town you can also check out the Center for History if you like Studebakers and Copshaholm (the Oliver Mansion).

#2 doesn't apply as it's not a football weekend (the tour was put together for out-of-town ND fans coming in for a football game), and I believe #3 has closed, but the rest gives you a pretty good rundown of the decent places to go downtown (if you want a slightly indecent place, consider... is it The Blarney Stone now?... it's a dive bar of many names on the south end of downtown).

There may be a place or two worth visiting in the Eddy St Commons, to the SW of the arena at the corner of Eddy and Edison/Angela.

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

Thanks for the tips. I've made a list and will check it twice. Are any of those places within walking distance of the Doubletree (where most of us will be staying)? The Studebaker exhibit is already on my "must see" list.

More than a few Huskies making the trip from what I hear so see y'all soon.

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

Looks like the DoubleTree now is the former Marriott, so... everything downtown is within walking distance of the hotel. Everything ND and Eddy St Commons is within walking distance of the arena.

Get JJfP to give you a tour of Copshaholm (the Oliver Mansion). Best docent they have!

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

It seems like we just played Western only a week ago...oh wait...

The venue for tomorrow night's game is about all that's different from last week. Once again, I am going, but Mr. JJfP is not allowed.

WMU and ND are pretty evenly matched except when looking at specific league scoring. Western has 3 players in double digits and they each recorded a point in last week's game here. ND has 4 guys with double digits. In looking at league scoring, 3 of ND's top 4 scorers are in the top 4 in the CCHA in several categories (T.J. Tynan is 1st in points, assists and PP points, Anders Lee is 1st in goals and PPG's and 2nd in PP points and Riley Sheahan is 2nd in assists and 4th in PP points).

I assume Nick Pisellini will start for WMU. He's got a GA of 2.25 and a save % of .909. Mike Johnson likely will get the start for ND. He's got a GA of 2.2 and a save % of .904.

WMU scores 3.08 goals/game while giving up 2.31. Western scores fewer goals as the game wears on even though they take more shots as the game progresses. The 2nd and 3rd periods are their worst D. ND averages 3.38 while giving up 2.38. ND gives up fewer goals as the game wears on and the 2nd and 3rd periods are their best O. Western's PP is working at a 12.3% clip while their PK is more effective, going 84.9%. ND's PP is a pleasant 22.6%, while their PK is a solid 87.2%. WMU is 4-2-0 at home while ND is 3-1-2 on the road.

Abraham Lincoln said, "Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle." Here's to some hustle.

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

For those of you who have Comcast the game is on at 7:05pm EST. I say ND by at least one, but who knows...

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

They score with 6:11 to go and tie it up 2 - 2.

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

With about 9 minutes left I turned to my sister and said, "Hell, I'd be happy with a SO loss." Why on earth didn't I say SO win?! I loathe the SO.

The team played well, controlled a good 35 minutes of regulation time and Mike Johnson made some rather good saves. Western's Slubowski also came up big a few times. And he owes one of his D a fat juicy steak after he got his stick on an Irish shot-right on the goal line to preserve their lead. There were 2 oh-so-close ones that left my jaw on the floor. I could be a poophead and call out Anders Lee for being on a 3-game goal scoring drought, but I'll cut him some slack. Coach Jackson broke up T.J. Tynan and Lee tonight. Lee was still double teamed and the chemistry was not there on those 2 lines. I am glad that Bryan Rust is starting to produce. Now if the others I called out would chip in I could relax, and Lee wouldn't risk getting his jersey shredded again while being mugged.

I guess being on a 10-game unbeaten streak is not too shabby.

I've decided to make another trek to the U.P. At least this weekend will be about 50 degrees warmer and have about 4 fewer feet of snow than the last time I followed ND up there!

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

What am I thankful for (in the hockey world at least)? I'm thankful for the Comptons and the new rink. I'm thankful that Coach Jackson eats, sleeps and breathes hockey. I'm thankful that Anders Lee just happens to be on my favorite team.

Seems like every team ND plays lately is remarkably similar to the Irish. Probably explains the 5 games out of the last 7 that have gone to OT. Lake Superior State is another one of those similar teams. 4 of their last 8 games have gone to OT. Does that mean more OT this weekend?

LSSU is coming off a sickening weekend at Canisius. Why do I say "sickening?" Because nearly half the team, coaching staff and support staff were violently ill while away from home. They managed a victory Sunday while playing with only 7 forwards, some of whom were vomiting on the bench. Now that's a team with character, desire and awfully strong stomach muscles. Makes me a little worried about this weekend.

The Lakers are led by Nick McParland who has 12 points. Zach Trotman is their top guy on special teams as he has 4 PPG's. They have 13 regulars who have scored. Kevin Kapalka has been in net nearly every minute for LSSU. He's got a GA of 2.19 and a save % of .922.

ND is still led by T.J. Tynan who has 21 points. Lee leads the team in PPG's with 5. ND has 14 regulars who have scored at least one goal each. Mike Johnson has a GA of 2.16 and a save % of .906.

While LSSU's PP isn't that impressive at 15.3%, their PK is fantastic at 91.2%. They've scored PPG's in only half of their games. They average 2.64 GF while giving up 2.14 GA.

ND's PP is very solid at 21.5% while their PK is 87.5%. ND has managed a PPG in 11 of their 14 games. Unfortunately, 2 of those 3 games where they didn't get a PPG have been the last 2 they've played. They average 3.29 GF and give up 2.38 GA.

Looking forward to the trip, the games and another opportunity to see some bald eagles.

One of my favorite verses is Galatians 6:9, "And let us not be weary in well doing; for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not."

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

Yay! I am also thankful for Bryan Rust and Nick Larson coming on of late. ND did a nice job fore checking, back checking and improved in the face off circle, and I bet Mike Johnson would like to have that shot back as it trickled over the line. Other than that, he made some nice saves, read the plays well and seemed pretty poised--unlike the 3 kids in front of me and behind the ND bench. I'm guessing they have never had a date... ND got away with a trip, but the refs "made up" for it by giving Larson a misconduct for barking at the ref when he was slashed right in front of the ref.

A split on the road is acceptable. Anything more would give me more to be thankful for. Hint. Hint.

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

Wow. That was ugly. I blame the special teams. Or maybe the short bench. Or maybe the fact that I did not wear my jersey. I have been in attendance for 2 of ND's 3 losses and I was wearing the same hoodie both times.

Trying to put this ugly loss into perspective, I have to remember a few things:

1. ND just finished an 11-game unbeaten streak,
2. ND has 3 of the top 10 scorers in the league (2 of whom are #1 and #2),
3. ND is in 1st place in the CCHA,
4. ND just finished their 9th game in 23 days (that's a game every 2.5 days),
5. ND split on the road (as one is supposed to),
6. ND played with a short bench tonight, with one of those forwards a transplanted Dman in Jared Beers (granted that short bench was due to the undisciplined language of one player and no working alarm clock for another),
7. as of this moment, ND is still 3rd in PWR,
8. ND's 3 losses have been to ranked teams, and
9. ND has managed wins and ties without the benefit of goals by Anders Lee the last 5 games.

Plenty to be thankful for. Now it's time for my Christmas wish list. Now, let's see...

It was a hell of an eleven game run. Especially that OT win last weekend. You guys will be in the running for the Four, for sure. Good luck in the second half. Hope to get out there and see your new rink, it looks like a gem.

I'm thankful that NMU tied ND and won the shoot-out both nights, even though ND is the better team. It simply shows that #9 in the CCHA can skate with #1. On any given night...
