Irish hockey '12-'13: Why would you not wanna go there?

Re: Irish hockey '12-'13: Why would you not wanna go there?

Michigan is starting to improve (though they won't pull a rabbit out of the hat), so let's see if ND can complete a season sweep for the first time in...

6 years, 2006/07. 3-0-0. 1 there, 1 here, 1@JLA. Before that, 1972/73, 4-0-0. 2 here, 2 there. Came close to a season sweep in 1981/82. Won@JLA (GLI), win and tie there, win and win here (CCHA playoffs).

Also won both as affiliate member of the WCHA in 1970/71.

We're not out of anything...

... but it's not the end of the world....

...People need to calm down, stop looking for reasons to be hysterical...

...So maybe I'm just a glass half full kind of person, but that's how I see it... ...Cry if you want, give up, but i'm still very much hoping for the best...

Attitudes like this are why teams like the Detroit Lions exist.

What exactly are you seeing that leads you to believe anything will be just fine, let alone everything?

Do we have an impenetrable penalty kill? Do we have an unstoppable power play? Are we constantly getting to the dirty areas in front of all these "great" goalies? Are we supporting the puck effectively to create opportunities? Do we control at least one area of the ice -- defensive, neutral or offensive -- with regularity? Does every player on the team know his role and perform it most or all of the time? Have we finally gone an entire weekend without a soul-crusing stupid penalty? Are you inside the locker room so you can assure me everyone is buying in and the team has not fractured along one fault line or another?

Can you answer yes to any one of those questions? Can you point to any one thing that the coaches have done that has worked to create this optimism? Instead our only success so far in 2013 has been because we managed a 1-0 win over and one of the worst teams in the NCAA and the worst team in the CCHA, and we had a player who had gone 65 games without scoring finally net his first goal. On second thought, lets measure everyone for championship rings based on that. I'm sure things are turning around and we're about ready to go on a 16 game win streak...

Re: Irish hockey '12-'13: Why would you not wanna go there?

I have to agree with IHF here. I have been a long time Laker Fan and have followed ND's thread because of the Jackson connection. You have a very tough road ahead with little room for error. Next up is Michigan, the best 8th place team in February I have ever seen, then a trip to Miami that just cooled off a hot Alaska team that swept you two weeks ago in SB. Then, Western Michigan who has not lost a CCHA game at home this season (although Miami is there this weekend).

Based on ND's play in the second half, I'm thinking anything over .500 the rest of the way would be pretty good. I'm not trolling here because I'm somewhat of a closet ND hockey fan because of the Jackson/LSSU connection. I think you have underperformed based on how you look on paper (not as badly as Michigan) and I am not sure why.

Herb Brooks

To say Herb Brooks allowed a lot of creativity on his teams is a little off. By all accounts he was pretty much as rigid as the way he was portrayed in the famous movie we've all probably seen. His system allowed for a little more movement and fluidity on the ice than most were accustomed to in the 1970s, but he still had his system. His players were chosen because they could excel in it, but if they strayed from it, they weren't going to play. And I'm willing to bet if that straying included a propensity for selfish play or stupid penalties, the offending players grabbed some bench.

What a stupid answer. WHat exactly do you have at stake here? Want to know what I have at stake? Nothing. I don't win any money if they win or lose. I don't lose a scholarship. I don't win or lose a job. I won't get court marshalled. I don't get deported. Nothing. I watch hockey because, wait for it, I like watching hockey. I follow Notre Dame because I like Notre Dame. It's that simple. Have they played poorly, yes. But i'm not going to start counting LOSSES THAT HAVEN'T HAPPENED. As long as there is a chance that the team can turn it around and remain competitive, and I provided the reasons why I feel that is so, i'm not going to waste my time writing the same idiotic thing over and over. I'm going to continue to cheer for my favorite teams and hope they win. I'm going to enjoy myself because, again, that is why I watch hockey.

BTW, Jeff Jackson isn't going to get fired. That's the way it is as well.

You're right, we should just quit and commit mass suicide.

Re: Irish hockey '12-'13: Why would you not wanna go there?

Not that I want to contribute to playground name-calling, but those last 2 posts are the definition of stupid. You act as if complaining about the team is equal to wanting them to flounder. I would be willing to bet my house that all of us will cheer for Notre Dame this weekend and want more than just about anything for this team to win, but we are also not going to award a ribbon to the team just for showing up. Are the rest of us gonna lose a job a scholarship or even sleep when this team plays poorly? No. But we have every right as fans to expect the best and decry the worst. That's why they keep score. So you like hockey. Good for you. Some of us not only love hockey, but love Notre Dame hockey. And when something we love falls far short of expectations, we get frustrated. Even mad. How come fans like you never post kudos to us when we praise this team?

Re: Irish hockey '12-'13: Why would you not wanna go there?

You're correct NotreDameFan27, those of us here have nothing at stake. Nothing to lose. Nothing to win. Not even points on a message board. Which is unfortunate, because with your improper syntax, responses that fail to answer questions (rhetorical or not) posed to you, and a complete failure to understand what you are even arguing about, the rest of us would be beating you.

MeridianStreet never suggested quitting. Just simply wondered how a coach he or she knew to be so successful at another institution would seem to struggle so much now. I didn't "answer" anything in my post quoting one of yours, although I did ask you some questions.

As for Jeff Jackson's potential firing, when has anyone brought that up as a realistic possibility or called for it? I know I haven't and while I am not going to re-read every post here, I don't recall anyone else calling for it either. Some -- like me -- have expressed disappointment with his moves. Does disappointment mean fire him now, or were you just answering a question nobody asked or responding to a comment nobody made?

It's too bad USCHO no longer archives threads that are more than a couple of years old. You could look at some of the things we wrote during earlier, successful campaigns. Lots of praise. Lots of celebratory posting. Lots of reflecting on what the team and coaches were doing. Good or bad, just like now. But now we're in the middle of a second monumental collapse in as many seasons, and a third disappointing season in 4. A collapse like we are seeing shouldn't happen once, let alone twice. Show me another team that was staring down virtually the rest of the NCAA on January 1st, and 3 months later was left off the guest list for the NCAA party. And we are well on our way to doing it two years in a row. Do some research and find me the last team that collapsed that badly.

I don't know why I'm having an internet argument with you. I should just put you on "ignore" like I do with the rest of the trolls. But as a fellow Notre Dame fan I want to have more respect for you than that. No one here isn't cheering for the team and we're all hoping for the best. We all hope we come out of this weekend against Michigan with 2 big wins and it starts us down a path to a great finish. That you equate complaining about poor play and poor coaching with quitting or not being a fan tells me you really are the kind of person who believes in those participation medals and ribbons. I'm sorry but I cannot understand that line of thinking. It's more foreign to me than anyone I know from a different nation. These aren't 7 and 8 year old boys and girls with their soccer moms and volunteer coaches. These are highly compensated professionals (the coaches are all 6 figure guys, the athletes are all playing in return for something that is worth nearly a quarter of a million dollars on the front end and potentially a lot more on the back).

For your sake I hope you aren't a hypocrite and were cheering just as hard as the team shuffled off the ice following the first Alaska game as you were when they beat Ferris State. Because you're, you know, a REAL fan.

Re: Irish hockey '12-'13: Why would you not wanna go there?

In a development that is almost hockey related we have a brand new reason to be disappointed. If not in the team, at least in one member. Jared Beers was the latest Irish athlete to be arrested, early this morning after allegedly assaulting a woman --either a bartender of the establishment's manager -- at a place near campus.

Re: Irish hockey '12-'13: Why would you not wanna go there?

Look at it this way: good things happened after the last batch of arrests (a trip to the FF). Maybe this cloud has a silver lining...

Since he's a nice local boy I hope ma and pa have one ear and ResLife the other.

Well that's certainly a glass half full attitude. Someone should be happy.

Knowing that this story has hardly been written and 99% of the information is yet to be seen, I still have a number of concerns. He is alleged to have committed the battery a little before midnight, and over 2 hours later was still drunk enough to be arrested for public intoxication. Did he decide all on his own to go to the police department to retrieve his wallet or were there friends (perhaps teammates) who foolishly let him go? And how drunk, stupid, or both was he to resist law enforcement AT the police station? Under the Indiana code to be guilty of resisting law enforcement you have to be in their presence and know they are cops. So did he actually resist at Sample Street? You aren't going to be charged with it simply for leaving before the cops arrive, because to be charged with fleeing law enforcement the same circumstances apply.

Fortunately for Beers, these are all misdemeanors -- even if a couple are class A misdemeanors -- and the prosecutors office is likely to charge him with fewer offenses than what he was arrested on suspicion of. People with clean records don't end up incarcerated even for class A misdemeanors. But it certainly raises questions as to his return to the team, in both the short term and the long. Hopefully if his problems are deeper than just a night of stupid and unfortunate decisions, he'll get the help he needs.

My take was that he was arrested because they tried to arrest him earlier and he fled, not because of anything he did at the station.

The visual of him going down to the station to claim his wallet has me picturing Homer Simpson going after his motorboat. (Someone must get that reference!)

tOSU. Last season. Number 1/2 heading into the new year. Only won 1 or 2 games outright (and a couple of gimmick shootout wins) after the 1st of the year. Totally depressing. :(

Re: Irish hockey '12-'13: Why would you not wanna go there?

Well, I'm not sure based on that article. The reporter refers to Beers as one of Notre Dame's top defensemen and we all know that to be incorrect. He had even been replaced as the 6th man by Johnson in the last few weeks and wasn't getting any ice time at all. Barring injury he was about as likely to play this weekend as I was.

Intimidation, battery, resisting law enforcement, and the other offenses listed are all usually charged as misdemeanors. To be raised to the felony level, intimidation, battery and resisting law enforcement all need additional serious elements. Fleeing or resisting by use of a vehicle for instance. Battery is a misdemeanor unless committed knowingly against a law enforcement officer (or other public officials, like fire fighters performing their duties), or the victim meets certain criteria, none of which this manager met as far as I know. It appears though that he was driven to the police by someone else, because he was not also charged with operating a vehicle under the influence, which he certainly would have have been charged with had he driven himself, based on his blood alcohol level and his intoxicated state.

Is this an isolated incident of a hockey player behaving incredibly stupid and immature? Or was half the team there, getting as drunk as he was getting and they just kept their wits enough to avoid getting arrested as well? Thankfully he didn't kill anyone drinking and driving, and the woman's injuries are likely not severe. What a dope. Hopefully Jackson and the rest of the coaches have a better handle on this team that it appears right now.

I stand corrected, at least somewhat. Now someone find me a team that did the same thing two years in a row.

Another example, not nearly as recent, is 1980-81 Northeastern. They won their first twelve games, then lost 13 of the final 14 including the last eleven in a row.

They followed it up with the school's only Frozen Four appearance, a third-place finish in 1981-82.

Re: Irish hockey '12-'13: Why would you not wanna go there?

Not a surprise announcement, but Beers has been kicked off the team. Suspended indefinitely is the vernacular the university will use, but he's certainly played his last game for Notre Dame for the time being.

It was definitely harder in those days to make the tournament, as only 8 teams were selected, albeit from a smaller pool. 12 games into the season was probably only early November as well. But that is a pretty epic collapse.

I still want to know who has done it two years in a row (and I know Notre Dame hasn't "done it" yet) though. Anything can happen once. A bad year in isolation is expected. But the startling similarities in how the two seasons are unfolding are what have me asking so many questions.

Re: Irish hockey '12-'13: Why would you not wanna go there?

They also started playing later in those days. First game was on 11/25 (11 - 5 win over Harvard), last of the twelve-game win streak was on 1/20 (12 - 4 win over Merrimack, who were D2 at the time), last win was 1/28 (8 - 6 win over BU).
