Irish hockey '12-'13: Why would you not wanna go there?

Re: Irish hockey '12-'13: Why would you not wanna go there?

Well, the players are saying the right things, even if some of them seem to be getting a little of the history wrong. But then, how many admitted to any panic last season while it was crashing and burning? "Must win" was thrown around last weekend, especially for Saturday's game. What are the games called that are played AFTER you lose the must win ones?

I do think the season rides on what happens right here and right now. I'm not ready to pronounce it cured if they manage a home sweep against a team with no NHL draft picks. But if the poor play, losses and excuses continue this weekend, this team won't likely win anything of note in the 2012-13 season. Of course a team with no NHL draft picks played in the final game of the season a year ago. Amazing what happens when you get the most out of your talent.

Re: Irish hockey '12-'13: Why would you not wanna go there?

And the free-fall continues. What an utterly slip shod performance. Jackson has lost this team. At no time during the second half has it even remotely looked like he's hit on something that will help. There isn't a single player or coach that looks like they are responding positively when their backs are against the wall. This team will be lucky to finish in the top 8. There is far too much talent in that locker room, not to mention the supposed top-notch facilities to train in, for them to be going through this all over again. If this was a different school or a sport where more people were paying attention, Jackson's job would be in jeopardy.

Oh well, I couldn't afford post-season hockey anyway this year.

Re: Irish hockey '12-'13: Why would you not wanna go there?

I'm sure T'eo could hook up his fellow ND lettermen on campus.

Right now this team's talent looks as imaginary as Manti's girlfriend. Jackson's coaching too. At any rate, Te'o has already graduated and has left campus. Come to think of it, it looks like most of the hockey team has left too.

I almost miss the Poulin era. At least then I never had any real expectations.

Re: Irish hockey '12-'13: Why would you not wanna go there?

11 games is plenty when you're only back one game. They can still turn it around, but they need to play like they want to win. They play down to their opponents. They play like they are their *****es. They have to play more desperate, I think. It's their lack of intensity that makes it easy for other teams to clog the neutral zone and stop offensive chances once they are ahead.

They obviously need to score more. Most of the offense is waiting for someone else to do something. Everyone should want to do something. Put the puck on net, crash it. Take advantage of crazy angle shots, redirections. Don't be so cute.

The offense has just shut down and hopefully this thing rights itself soon, like tomorrow.

Re: Irish hockey '12-'13: Why would you not wanna go there?

We have slipped to 4th in the league. One more loss coupled with an Alaska win means 5th (for now). We have plummeted to 15th in the PWR. One more loss likely means out of the tourney (for now). I can't remember a faster downfall. Even last year it took most of the second half to hit (near) rock bottom. How is it possible for this team to fold like a house of cards under the weight of expectations?! Do we have to expect a horrible season for them to do anything positive?

Re: Irish hockey '12-'13: Why would you not wanna go there?

During this slide there have been no shortage of quotes from player after player, all proclaiming sentiment similar to "we're not panicking" or "we have great chemistry" or "this is different than last year" or any one of a hundred other tired cliches. It was the same thing last year. And it was the same thing two years before that.

3 out of 4 years is a trend. It is looking more and more like the run to the 2011 Frozen Four was the fluke. Perhaps that team -- heavily laden with freshmen, including a couple that were not expected to arrive for another season -- simply caught people off guard. I know it never faced the kind of adversity the team did the year before all those freshmen arrived, or the 2 seasons following, despite what Kevin Lind said during the week.

Regardless of the rhetoric, this team has panicked. Their chemistry can be questioned. And if they don't recognize the startling similarities with how last season ended and how this season is currently going, their eyesight or intelligence is debatable as well. Following both last season and the end of the debacle in 2010 Jackson alluded to a sense of entitlement creeping into the locker room. Is the same thing going to be said once again if this season continues to crash and burn? And if so, with the ever changing cast of characters that is the nature of college athletics, isn't that an indictment of Jackson more than anything else?

After 2010 it was premature and probably a little too reactionary to pin most of the blame on Jackson or his staff. After last season pointing the finger in that direction seemed a little less unfair, but there were enough adjustments to a brand new set of circumstances and expectations that another pass didn't seem completely unreasonable. A finish this season reflective more of the current collapse than of the torrid start and those questions not only stop being misplaced or unfair, they become mandatory. And right now, Jackson does not have any of the answers.

Re: Irish hockey '12-'13: Why would you not wanna go there?

Been lurking here for years, time to chime in: This team (teams) are over coached. Everything is the system, if you don't play the "Mans" system, you don't play. Case in point: why are all the top recuirts best year, their freashman year (even back to the Poulan Yrs.) ? It's because they come in here filled with p*ss and viniger, creativity and a desire to show the world they can contribute. They are not part of the system yet, and they excel. By the time their soph and Jr years come about they are the system. Just X's & O's on the coaches chaulk board, no more creativity, no more fire in the belly, just go out there and exocute and don't get caught out of position.
When is the last time TJ did a Spin-O-Rama move, the last time somebody was in the crease to recieve a pass from behind the goal, like forever !! Our Goalies are Mediocre at best and the team is fed up with propping them up and stopping 100 mph
slap shots, because they know they (goalies) can't stop or see them.
As everbody has said: "This team plays better in front of Summerhays". I don't think this is true anymore, since the 2nd Mich State (and our slide from #2 in the nation) game when he got into it with Steven John's on the ice and the Referee had to escort John's to the bench, too seperate them. Summerhay's then got in to it with Gerth's and the Ref. had to break that up too.
Ever since that incident, this team has been abysmal. The coaching staff needs to take the bridles off and let this team play hockey. The old pond style hockey, in your face style, not the chess match syle we play now.

Not judging, just saying

That was by far the best post I have read on this forum in 3 years. Completely accurate. At times the 3rd and 4th line centers seem more like a 3rd dman. When your defense has more shots on goal than ur forwards there is a problem!!Thanks for your input although no one will listen.

Re: Irish hockey '12-'13: Why would you not wanna go there?

Do we have to expect a horrible season for them to do anything positive?
Aside from 2009, Notre Dame has not lived up to some of the highest preseason expectations. I expect we might lose the rest of them this season. Maybe that means a run to Pittsburgh.

Code:
    Picks Finish

2006 9/9 8
2007 6/8 1
2008 3/3 4
2009 1/2 1
2010 2/2 9
2011 5/5 2
2012 1/1 8
2013 1/3 ???

Re: Irish hockey '12-'13: Why would you not wanna go there?

I think Summerhays is a good goalie and definitely the best goalie on the team, but I'm wondering if there has been locker room drama since that Steven Johns incident in December. I wonder if that might explain some of these problems, at least when it comes to team chemistry.

I don't want to overstate that idea, because I think defensively they still play alright. I think the main problem is the lack of intensity, lack of agressiveness getting to the net, lack of shots and, as a result, lack of goals. It's tough to blame any of that on the goalie and defenseman, but I wonder if they all aren't as close as they once were.

Re: Irish hockey '12-'13: Why would you not wanna go there?

I went by the Compton early this afternoon and I saw all these young babes in skintight short dresses wearing spiked heels................what gives??
Would that really work?
Given the result tonight, I think you just answered your own question!

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you

The Nuge!

Re: Irish hockey '12-'13: Why would you not wanna go there?

Boy is this a team of extremes. When they compete and play smart, focused hockey they are one tough customer. And when they don't, they can't buy a win.

There is a fine line between panic and desperation. You harness the panic and turn it to your advantage, you get a desperate and dangerous team. Commit to playing for the guy next to you on the bench. Don't do it for your friends. Don't do it for your classmates. Don't do it for people on a message board. Play like you are desperate to not let down the guy next to you on the bench.

Aside from a couple of selfish penalties we saw that last night. And look at the result. A team that can be three goals better than most opponents.

Right now they need to commit to each other that for the rest of the season, this is how they are going to play. The time for leadership and accountability is here, and there is little margin for error. I don't know if they are cured, but at least they made an appointment with the doctor.

Re: Irish hockey '12-'13: Why would you not wanna go there?

Contemplating the positives last night, I came up with a fairly lengthy list.

1. Coach Jackson having the courage to change up the lines...during the game.
2. The fact that #1 worked. Quite well.
3. Notre Dame getting scoring from not only their primary and secondary lines, but also their tertiary and quaternary lines.
4. Kevin Nugent getting the first star of the game.
5. Finally scoring a PPG.
6. The team not deflating after giving up the lead.
7. Winning.

Good points all. Of course as badly as a win was needed, maybe #7 was actually #1!

Boy is this a team of extremes.

I posted this, and then I really began to think about it. We've won 9 games by 3 or more goals so far this season. Which if my count is correct that is the same number as MU and WMU combined. In addition, 6 of those 9 came against teams we also LOST to, sometimes the previous night. Like last weekend. I'm guessing there are some other teams out there (other than in the CCHA) that have won as many or more games in blowout fashion, but I'm also guessing they have not had the ups and downs we have had.

The talent level and potential is for big wins. Focus and effort that matches that talent and potential is what it will take.
