Illegal Immigration Pt. III: It's Illegal to be Illegal? Really?

So says you and the rest of the people that want amnesty. In other words, horse feathers.

Ok. You're right. Securing the border is incredibly easy. I'm sure any 5th grade class with two crates of Lincoln Logs and 3 days of concentrated effort could have it locked up nice and tight, and the only reason it hasn't been done is "the government" just wants to spite you.

Re: Illegal Immigration Pt. III: It's Illegal to be Illegal? Really?

Both parties have their share of contradictions - such is the nature of being a collection of special interest groups. On the Dem side, the biggest wedge I see is between the industrial unions and environmentalists.

Free traders vs protectionists is another.

Both parties have financial regulatory contradictions: the Dems espouse regulation but their once and future Goldman advisors subvert regulation, the GOP espouses a free market but their once and future Goldman advisors rig the game for their firms. Almost as if the whole thing were a scam. Huh.

This is more or less another angle of the immigration debate. Free trade improves the standard of living in countries that can produce goods cheaply by keeping markets open to them. Protectionism shuts those countries out by taxing the hell out of their goods - which saves high-paying domestic jobs in the short run but screws over consumers in the long run via higher prices for less efficiently produced goods. It also has the consequence of reducing exports as other countries inevitably retaliate with tariffs of their own.

They know who butters their bread - both in terms of financing their campaigns and in terms of providing them post-Congressional cushy job employment.

I'm not saying the Dems have made brilliant policy, but at least they generally believe in the power of education. The GOP actively courts morons, not only as voters but also candidates. There is a significant amount of intelectual conservatives out there who not only cannot support the GOP while it's being run by knuckledraggers who think getting intelligent design into biology classrooms is a top priority, but are forced out of the GOP for not being "conservative enough." (always on the social side, too).

For god's sake, the GOP's own proposed litmus test makes it logically impossible to be on board with all of the porposed beliefs; some are completely contradictory.

Sen Bob Bennett agrees with you:

Nice of him to reference the Patriots too! :D

Not sure what's driving the anti-intellectualism of the GOP, but its crowding out not only the so-called turncoats, but more thoughtful Republicans like Romney who can't compete for oxygen with the likes of Palin, etc. The problem now though is for relatively younger voters those wanting to refight culture wars come off as dinosaurs. Simply put they're a shrinking demographic.

Bob Bennett speaks like a true sore loser. Have the stones to make these comments when he was still the incumbent Senator from Utah, and you may have something.

If Mitt Romney is a "thoughtful" Republican, the GOP is in more trouble than I thought. The man is a walking contradiction.

The culture wars will always be with us, only the issues will change: religious observance, slavery, temperance, women's rights, drugs, abortion, gay rights, stem cells, and on and on forever. Two reasons:

(1) Political cynicism. For operatives on both sides, the issues are arbitrary, waging the war is what matters because that generates tremendous political power.

But even if we set all the Karl Rove scum adrift on an ice floe, there's still:

(2) Ethical sincerity. If we disagree strongly in a moral case, then you are, by definition, immoral. If I think my moral conviction is at all important, I want to limit your influence, eradicate your opinion, and promulgate my own. The only alternative to the culture wars is moral impotence.

Re: Illegal Immigration Pt. III: It's Illegal to be Illegal? Really?

Oh, I forgot! It was Mexican drug lords that flew into the WTC towers. My bad.

Those terrorists came from the sky. What's Obama doing to protect us from the sky?!

Uh, just because those were terrorists, doesn't mean terrorism is limited to flying planes into buildings.

All murderers are criminals, but not all criminals are murderers. Likewise, all 9/11 suspects were terrorists, but not all terrorists are 9/11 suspects.

Logic is fun.

I understand the logic, that's why my original post had a smiley. :p

I just thought it was an interesting perspective considering some posters are having coronaries abouts signs, when our Northern border is wide open.

Take over the WORLD, so we don't have any borders!!!!
