Illegal Immigration IV: Amnesty For Some, Miniature American Flags For Others

Re: Illegal Immigration IV: Amnesty For Some, Miniature American Flags For Others

What ever happened to Lou Dobbs? He would have been perfectly positioned for the vanguard of the nativist portion of the Tea Party and he would have brought some welcome intelligence to a group notably bereft of, even hostile to, it. IIRC there was talk of him running for governor of VA or something, which would have been as absurd as Al Franken running for the Senate.

:D

I believe he joined Fox News.

But that's been known to happen when you head to the Beltway.

I love that argument. In reality, what happens when you "head to the Beltway" as a rep is you are inundated with constant information about what is happening back home, from phone calls, letters, focus groups, polls... People inside the Beltway get far more, and more diverse, information about what is going on back in their state than one person with one point of view and one circle of friends and one self-selected set of news sources.

Ok. Thanks for a good chuckle. So Janet, who was all over the federal government (or at least pretending to be) while governor of Arizona, suddenly totally changes here tune when arriving in the Beltway. And it's because she has better information in the Beltway than she did while being governor of Arizona? Come on Kepler. I'd expect something like this from Rover, not you. She is saying what she is saying because it's the official mantra of the Obama administration, nothing more or less.

The Daily Show showed a clip from a recent interview with Dobbs and he sided against the Right and the Tea Party on immigration in the interview. Stewart said something to the effect of "Their immigration beliefs are so crazy Lou Dobbs is against them".

It was a couple weeks ago so I may be remembering it wrong.

Oh, that may well be true in this case. What I was responding to was that old "inside the Beltway, cut off from reality" nonsense. If that's not what you intended, mea culpa.

Oh, I buy the "inside the beltway, cut off from reality" idea in general, but I think Napolitano's situation is laughably obvious. Really, she's the last person Obama should have out there commenting on Arizona border issues, given the long record she has of saying very opposite things while AZ governor.

On the general topic, of course not everyone is cut off from reality and there are varying degrees. But, living in a place like Arizona that's a long ways from D.C., it's sometimes staggering the misconceptions some career Beltway person has of how things work out here. I've experienced it myself a number of times in my professional capacity.

For example, the "hired gun" who was my state's senator when I was growing up, despite having grown up his entire life and having gone to school in DC. He was powerful and connected, though, so the good people of my state elected him to serve their interests. You may have heard of him - guy by the name of Al Gore, Jr.

But, but, isn't he a paragon of wisdom who serves all mankind (and planetkind and universekind), while getting rich off doing it to boot?

I thought that was Mittens?

As soon as Lou left CNN he switched his position on the issue... nothing more, nothing less.

Interesting story of someone who lives in the border area and what they experience. Small things in life, like mail delivery, that we take for granted are no longer available there due to safety concerns for mail carriers.

It sounds like the border patrol is everywhere. I'm very impressed with the job they're doing. And they're sending another $600 million down there. Definitely not the 'where's the border patrol' situation many are complaining about.
