IIHF World Championships

USA down 0-2 to Norway. Anybody else watching this travesty in goaltending?

I get the idea behind using it as a development tournament, but it's painful watching a bunch of scrubs in USA sweaters three years in a row, even if it does help at the Olympics.

Re: IIHF World Championships

Haven't seen him. Holos from the Nordiques (Avs) is there.
This team seems very well-coached in two things:
1) Taking sharp-angle, low-percentage shots into a ton of traffic.
2) Skating to the box.

US finally draws a pipe as the 2nd period ends.

Glad I bought the Deutschland jersey instead.

Re: IIHF World Championships

They got Jack Johnson, but they couldn't con Jon Quick into making the trip?

Re: IIHF World Championships

Skille shovels in another pass along the goal-line and its 2-2.
Now it's interesting.

Re: IIHF World Championships

why doesn't vikingstad just take on all of these teams on his own? Wouldn't that level the playing field a little?

They say Vikingstaad doesn't need to slap shot the puck. The puck zooms off his stick in fear because a real shot would break the puck into a million tiny pieces.

Re: IIHF World Championships

Finally Palmieri on the PP and it's 3-2. Third-straight zero-angle goal. Shows why I'm not coaching hockey.

Re: IIHF World Championships

Craig Smith with another PP tally. Norwegian killers were out there for 1:25 before the goal. 4-2 Final. Haugen for Norway saves 45 of 49. Montoya stops 13 of 15.

USA-Sweden at 1:15 PM (Central) Wednesday. Take a late lunch. Buy Ryan Miller a ticket to Slovakia.

And now you know why no American will ever be in the Triple Gold Club.

Actually the World Championships is a joke. It's a tournament completely slanted towards the Euro members of the IIHF as evidenced by the fact it takes place at the end of the Euro season but not the Stanley Cu Playoffs. And the fact that it's played every year.

Considering that 14 of the 16 nations participating are in Europe, that's probably fair.
Actually, I don't mind that aspect of it. It lets some of the other nations develop while most of the "Big Six" players are still in the NHL. Countries like Switzerland and Germany have put together pretty good teams the past few years using mostly players from their national leagues, which helps grow the sport.
