I Think I'll Go For A Walk - Death Pool Thread

Re: I Think I'll Go For A Walk - Death Pool Thread

The "History of Television" they ran on PBS (?) a few years ago featured Andy Williams' show on their "Variety Show" episode. I had only heard the name and wasn't familiar with the man or his show at all. It was a revelation how influential that show was, and how interesting a person he was.

He sang "Battle Hymn of the Republic" at RFK's funeral. Glorious and tragic at the same time. Impossible for anyone who saw it to forget.

Re: I Think I'll Go For A Walk - Death Pool Thread

I couldn't find a video clip, so this will have to suffice:

6h2wc2.jpg
Nelson: "What is this place?"
Bart: "Branson, Missouri. My dad says it's like Vegas -- if it were run by Ned Flanders."
Nelson: [sees a sign extolling the virtues of an Andy Williams concert] "Andy Williams!"
Bart: "Aw, we don't need to stop here."
Nelson: "Yes we do." [punches Bart in the back of the head]

Mr. Williams' vocal stylings have a varied effect on the boys. Bart, Martin, and Milhouse are fast asleep. Nelson, however, is enthralled.

Andy Williams: [singing off-camera]
...my huckleberry friend
Moon river, and me. [audience applauds]

Nelson: "I didn't think he'd do Moon River, but then -- bam! -- second encore!"

You're my new favorite poster.

Are you familiar with the clip I tried to find?

I stopped watching The Simpsons years ago, so thanks for clarifying.

Maybe it's because I'm old enough to have watched the Williams show in its original run.

Of course, I'm also old enough to remember Celeste Holm. ;)

Re: I Think I'll Go For A Walk - Death Pool Thread

Celeste Holm was Leslie Ann Down's Cinderella's fairy godmother. I will always remember her for that. RIP.

I always loved that her look said, "I figured you out ten minutes ago; I'm just deciding whether I like it." That is sexy.

Wow. Thanks for posting that, joe. Those books are a huge part of my childhood. You always hope somebody you admire who you don't know is actually impressive in real life. This from his obit -- "His family has asked that donations in his memory be made to The New York Public Library at http://www.nypl.org/donaldsobol. Check donations can be mailed to The New York Public Library, 476 Fifth Avenue, Room M-6, New York, NY 10018, payable to The New York Public Library." -- make me feel like he was.

One of the first concerts I went to was Deep Purple. They were amazing! RIP Mr. Lord.

Re: I Think I'll Go For A Walk - Death Pool Thread

As a kid I grew up listening to Kitty Wells and Patsy Cline-they were 2 of my dad's favorites. He was a huge country western fan. Although I found lots of other music that I liked-50+ years later I still find something to really like about their songs. Just timeless.

"We have both kinds of music: country AND western."

I have no opinion, but that line reminds of this nugget from the great Bobby "The Brain" Heenan.

"There's only two kinds of music I don't like... Country and Western."
