Hotels in Minneapolis

bsaeagle64

Cautiously Optimistic
I realize it's a year away but I'm checking out hotels in the Minneapolis area for the 2011 Frozen Four.

I'd like a 2 bedroom suite hotel, but two single rooms will do. 2 Bedroom Suites go very fast (according to the Hotels, anyway), so the sooner we can make a decision, the better. The Marriott or Hyatt chain is the way we will go (enough points for rooms in either hotel chain). We would like to be in Minneapolis, if possible, equadistant from the Mall of America in Bloomington and the Xcel Energy Center in St Paul.

We will most likely be choosing from the following hotels:

Residence Inn Downtown Minneapolis/City Center
Residence Inn Minneapolis Downtown at the Depot
Hyatt Regency Minneapolis
Residence Inn MInneapolis Bloomington (near the Mall of America)

Any comments regarding these hotels, or suggestions regarding others, would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Hotels in Minneapolis

The Hyatt in Downtown Minneapolis is good, easy access to I-94 to get over to St. Paul. It's on Nicolett Avenue which is a nice area for bars, you'll be on the south end of the bars, but an easy walk up to them. At 5th and Nicolett there's a light rail station that will take you to Mall of America or you can drive down Portland and then cut over to Cedar to go to Mall of America and then stop at 5-8 or Matt's for a Jucy Lucy.

The Eastsiders will freak if you don't also mention The Nook as a good place to great a Jucy Lucy.

Well it is the better Jucy Lucy out of Matt's and the 5-8. But if you're driving on Cedar, you'd have to turn on the Parkway, go up to 46th Street, cross the Ford Bridge, drive up to Snelling, go north on Snelling, turn right on Randolph and then turn right on Hamline after going past the legendary Cretin High School baseball field where a couple of greats have played. :D

Rightsiders. :)
The "Drunken Irish" streets were done intentionally to keep out the west of the rivers types. :p
The Juicy Lucy: Invented in Minneapolis and perfected in Saint Paul. :D BTW, The Blue Door trumps the Nook. {waits for Handy to beech :D }

Strangely enough, Google Maps knows where to take you when you type in "Murderapolis".

And on St Pat's Day of this year, MNS and I did hear/see a fellow state to another fellow, "Yo, I don't fight, motha *a, I BLAST!"

Re: Hotels in Minneapolis

Residence Inn Downtown Minneapolis/City Center - You'll be in the skyway system, if that's of consideration to you. Within the skyway you can get to or near most of the downtown Mpls locations. To the east one block of the City Center is a Saks 5th Ave and one block to the south of that hotel is Macy's, if that's a reason to consider not allowing your wife to stay there.
Residence Inn Minneapolis Downtown at the Depot - Not connected to the skyway system, but like goldy said, it does have an ice rink attached. Sadly, it's a figure skating rink, so that's a bummer.
Hyatt Regency Minneapolis - Again, it's attached to the skyways, just to the south of the Regency, IIRC.
Residence Inn MInneapolis Bloomington (near the Mall of America) - If you have a car, it should be fine, unless you want to spend much time in downtown Mpls. This place is right along the I-494/694 loop, so you'll have easy access to pretty much the entire metro area. There's also easy access to the Xcel Center, if you follow Hgwy 5 north and then take Sheperd Rd along the Mississippi. You'll end up at the parking lots down the cliff from the arena, right behind 7 Corners Hardware.

I've been to the Blue Door a couple times, first time was better than the second time. Though I didn't have the Jucy Lucy, I had the Jiffey. I still think The Nook is the best in the metro. I like the Paul Molitor burger myself. I think the Blue Door, along with Matt's is good, but overrated.

Are you traveling with a female? If so I suggest a corner room overlooking Nicollet Ave at the Marquette. A couple can do wonderful things on the window ledge should they be so inclined. :D

Re: Hotels in Minneapolis

Is there an easy way to get from St. Paul to Minneapolis? I'm going to go out on a limb and say that we'll stay in St. Paul so we don't have to do anything but walk.

However, since we did St. Paul the last time the FF was held there, I'm willing to bet nothing new is there.

So either we would like to see downtown Minneapolis OR stay there- both of which- I'd rather take public transportation than try to park. I'm sure we'll get a car for other reasons.... If they have a bus between the X and the other side of the river, that would be pretty cool.

Does anyone know of ideas? Or current availablity? (and if there IS, what's it's website?)

It's pretty easy to get between the two by bus. I'm not up to speed on the light rail part yet.

Bus or cab between the two. The light rail does not go into St. Paul right now and it won't for the Frozen Four. Otherwise, I-94, University Ave., Franklin Ave., Lake Street/Marshall Ave, Ford Parkway/46th St. are all ways between the two cities.
