Hockey East TV

Re: Hockey East TV

So, I watched BU/UNH last night on this ASN thing. I thought the commentators were pretty good, they seemed to keep up a little better than Tom Caron and Brick or whoever it is that does NESN. But the video quality is pretty awful. Has that filmed/jittery/low frame-rate look. Hard to track the puck with it. And there's just something special about when NESN used to broadcast a pro-quality production from our rinks.

From what I understand, this is actually NESN producing the broadcast and that ASN only is a feed for it nationwide and might also do the intermission reports. Last night Eric Frede and Billy Jaffe were the announcers and they're NESN guys, Jaffe is usually the color guy when Tom Caron usually does the games. So no different in years past, even has the NESN logo in the upper right corner throughout the broadcast, with the only exception ASN is sending the game nationwide and handling pre/post game and intermissions.

Correct. It is obvious that the "intermission studio hosts" don't know much about hockey, but believe it or not, they have improved since September, when they were actually unwatchable (is that a word?). The only problem I have with Frede is that his voice is a monotone and puts you to sleep (or maybe that was the game...) At least Caron (not that he is a good announcer) seems to have a passion for the game and tries to get excited. I get the sense you could drop a bomb next to Frede and he wouldn't even notice.

Hmm, the visual production just looks so much lower budget than past NESN productions or even the Beanpot this year.

Re: Hockey East TV

Also in looking at schedule a number of games start on Friday night at 6PM--BU moved their Friday
games to 7:30 because fans could not get there by 7 because of traffic
Why do paying fans at game come in last again

Welcome to modern collegiate athletics!

Sincerely,

George Washington Univ men's basketball season ticket holder.

Seriously though, these collegiate leagues (and schools) always jump highest for TV. For the privilege of having my GW basketball season ticket costs raised by 60 percent, I was rewarded with a weekday 11 am game, a Thursday 9 pm and a Sunday 7 pm game. They also moved up a game to noon in preparation for the big East Coast snowstorm, but instead of moving to, say, the day after the final day of the regular season, they moved it up early so that only students and those who live in the neighborhood could feasibly attend the game. I have been meaning to call up and demand my ticket price back for that game, but I have been forgetting.

Season ticket holders are little more than ATMs now, and paying fans aren't putting up with it as we can see both at Minnesota and Wisconsin for hockey.

Eric Frede isn't a NESN guy. I've seen him on CSNNE/NECN sometimes, and the past 2 years he called the ECAC Championship games in Lake Placid on Fox College Sports. Also, ASN produces the broadcast, NESN then simulcasts it. Tom Caron has called most of the Hockey East broadcasts. The "NESN University" logo in the upper right of your TV screen is kinda stupid (it's also seen on ACC football/basketball games), since they run their ticker at the bottom of the screen. NESN did produce the Beanpot broadcasts, as the score banner for those games was identical to the one used during Bruins games. Do they still have the rights to the Hockey East Championship weekend?

According to the Hockey East Press releases ASN's last game will be a playoff game on 11 March. NESN will be broadcasting the Championship weekend, so I would guess that they have the rights to it.

Re: Hockey East TV

Eric Frede has always maintained an independent contractor status rather than sign on to a station/network on a permanent basis
Has passed up offers to maintain this position
Think he has always done a good job in various roles

Agreed. Like the way he calls the game. Believe he took over for Sean Grande way back when games were on Fox Sports New England (now CSNNE).

As for the TV schedule, looks like none of the first round playoff games will be aired which was not the case the last two years. UVM-UMass was on a couple years ago and Merrimack-NU last year. Combine that with games starting at 6 and 8:30...just a terrible TV deal this year. Hopefully not a sign of things to come.

But but but... Notre Dame = TV bonanza. Right?! Right?! Right?!
