Hockey East Preseason Thread. Predict and Win Eternal Glory

Re: Hockey East Preseason Thread. Predict and Win Eternal Glory

He should, but maybe he gets knocks for his time missed with injury and at the WJC

Why? He still outscored the next closest freshman (his teammate Harper) by 8 points. The game he missed from WJC was OOC.

Player of the year could be interesting too. ZAR and Kelleher are the obvious choices, but they weren't playing for the top teams. I think it's ZARs to lose, but comparing talent on their respective lines one could make a case for kelleher.

In any other year, Keller, Bjork, and Gambardella would all have a shot, but I doubt it this year.

Keller wins ROY walking away right?

Agree on Keller. ZAR should win POTY as well. I have a column coming out this week regarding why he is the front runner for the Hobey. Can also be applied to the HEA POTY run as well.

I'm not saying he should. I'm just saying, the media does a lot of weird things (I say this as someone in media)

When you win the rookie scoring title by 8 points, the missed games are not a factor. If anything, it works in his favor, not the other way around.

Re: Hockey East Preseason Thread. Predict and Win Eternal Glory

Final results going by position (not seeding):
York +5
Bazin +3
Sneddon +2
Dennehy +2
Gendron +1
Quinn EVEN (preseason #1)
Umile EVEN ( )
Leaman EVEN
Micheletto -1
Jackson -2
Cavanaugh -2
UMadBro? -6

If you're using this as a small guide for voting on COY, it's pretty clear that it has to be one of the three coaches that shared the RS title.

York.
Pros: Went +5, best in the league, and took a squad decimated by pro defections and amazingly tied UML and BU in the standings.
Cons: Team looks like they belong in the Super 8 rather than Hockey East as the season closes. Choked away a huge, huge lead.
Another con for York: Collectively, the coaches need to have their heads examined for picking BC to finish 6th. In other words, I'm not convinced York did a +5 coaching job this season. Personally, I would never pick BC to finish lower than 2nd or 3rd unless they were coming off back-to-back poor seasons, which might indicate they were trending downward. That wasn't the case here. In my mind, BC hockey is one of the few programs in college sports where you can truly say they don't rebuild, they reload.

Alternately you could say that York took the 6th best team, by KRACH ratings including OOC games, and got them to tie for 1st in the conference.
Bazin or York for coach of the year are fine, anyone else would shock me.

Just for fun compared where each team finished the regular season in KRACH among HE teams vs their preseason coaches poll record:
UML +3 (Predicted 4th -> currently 1st)
UVM +3 (8th -> 5th)
PC +2 (5th -> 3rd)
MC +1 (9th > 8th)
ME +1 (12th > 11th)
BC Even (6th > 6th)
UNH Even (10th > 10th)
BU -1 (1st > 2nd)
ND -1 (3rd > 4th)
MA -1 (11th > 12th)
UC -2 (7th > 9th
NU -5 (2nd > 7th)

By this measure the coaches' preseason predictions seem a bit more accurate, with only UML and UVM substantially overachieving, and NU significantly underachieving.

Re: Hockey East Preseason Thread. Predict and Win Eternal Glory

Keller's stiffest competition for the ROTY is likely his own team's goalie, Oettinger. Reminds me of Scott Cashman winning over Tony Amonte in 1990, who led a team loaded with Joe Sacco and Shawn McEachern in scoring. Cashman was a huge improvement in net for the Terriers that freshman year, but man, Amonte was a special player from Day 1. He had a similar "man amongst boys" look as Eichel.

But I think Keller will win it, and he should.

Keller and Oettinger have carried this team all year long...co rookies of the year?

I disagree. BC looked borderline bad every time I saw them this year and backed into a regular season title after not winning a game for almost the entire month of February. Their results against teams of any consequence are... not good. Despite how the conference standings ended up, I honestly think there are 5 teams in Hockey East that are better than BC.

Re: Hockey East Preseason Thread. Predict and Win Eternal Glory

Overall, I would take UML and BU over BC. right now, sure, take ND and PC. but if BC can somehow regain what they were...they are better than PC and right there with ND. Unfortunately this late tailspin has put them in a very bad position.

Re: Hockey East Preseason Thread. Predict and Win Eternal Glory

Curious to see some tourney predictions.

First Round:

PC (2) UMA (-inf)
UVM (2) Maine (1)
Merrimack (1) UNH (2) Dick Umile announces before the series he will retire at end of season
NU (2) UConn (0)

QFs:

Lowell (2) UNH (0) And so Norm Bazin adds another coaches head to his den, with freshman goalie Tyler Wall playing a cheap immitation role of Connor Hellebuyck
BU (2) NU (1) NU has more students at the Friday night game than BU because it would be hilarious
BC (1) UVM (2)
Notre Dame (1) PC (2)

Semifinal
PC> Lowell
BU > BC

Final

BU>PC, Hawkey drops puck in his own net
