Hockey East Preseason Thread. Predict and Win Eternal Glory

Re: Hockey East Preseason Thread. Predict and Win Eternal Glory

For whatever reason I was browsing conference schedules and take a look UMass. If they lose more than 3 games in OOC (4 if you account for their assured loss to Lowell at Tsongas in OOC) it would be pretty embarassing

2x CC
1x Army
1x QU
1x Princeton
2x ASU
1x AIC
1x Hunstville
Then tournaments with likely opponents of QU and Minnesota.

Contrast with UNH OOC schedule, some real iron there:
1x Bentley
1x @Clarkson
1x @St Lawrence
1x CC
1x Sacred Heart
1x Mercyhurst
1x AZ
1x RPI
1x Cornell @ MSG
1x Maine @ Verizon
1x @ Dartmouth
1x @ Brown

Re: Hockey East Preseason Thread. Predict and Win Eternal Glory

Yes, my predictions are in jest. But when you look at it on paper, not that far fetched.

POY:... Fitzgerald was 2nd in total pts last season, and #1 is gone. A seasoned vet... Fitz has improved year over year. I see the possibility of a Chris Collins like season for him as a senior.
COY: York lost a TON of talent to early departures. Here they are...
Steve Santini D Boston College Jr. New Jersey (NHL) 1-18-19 (41)
Miles Wood F Boston College Fr. New Jersey (NHL) 10-25-35 (37)
Alex Tuch F Boston College So. Minnesota (NHL) 18-16-34 (40)
Adam Gilmour F Boston College Jr. Minnesota (NHL) 12-14-26 (41)
Thatcher Demko G Boston College Jr. Vancouver (NHL) 27-8-4, 1.88, .935
Ian McCoshen D Boston College Jr. Florida (NHL) 6-15-21 (40)
Zach Sanford F Boston College So. Washington (NHL) 13-26-39 (41)

If his team even competes for the top slot, or comes close, he absolutely has to be considered as COY.

ROY: Woll... why not? Who else?
Best Goalie: Petersen is the odds on favorite by a wide margin. But some of my predictions have to come true for the Eagles to even compete for the top 4 this season, and Woll stepping up as a frosh is not out of the question. York has brought in some stud goaltenders over the years. Hoping for another.

#6 BU: Show me the money. :p

That all being said, the Eagles could just as easily swap slots with NU at #12. But we've got Jerry, and they've got a historically very slow starting team under Mad Again. I'll put my money on Jerry. :)

I would say yes, but remember that BC brings back more goals than anyone else in Hockey East. Lost very little to graduation. I think they will be in the mix. BU lost 3 of their top 4 scorers and their top scoring defenseman to graduation. The Woll/Oettinger competition will be fun to watch and will have a lot to do with these two teams' fates.

BC returns 79 goals, 45 in Hockey East. NU returns 106 and 62. BC doesn't have much returning scoring after the big three. Gaudreau and C. Fitzgerald had 4 goals, Calnan 3, Brown 2. Obviously White, Cango, and Fitzgerald are a ton of returning goals. but they alone aren't more than every other team.

BC returns 81. The count I had must have been before the last early departure (Sanford?). And I only looked the top 5 teams in the standings so thanks for the correction. So maybe BC is a bit worse off than I thought. :p I don't understand the relevance of separating out the Hockey East goals from total goals though.

. :p I don't understand the relevance of separating out the Hockey East goals from total goals though.

Perhaps it can be considered a measure of relevance (goals in games that matter more) and goals scored against (generally) stronger competition.

Or it is cherry picking because Northeastern made their run in the second half where the bulk of conference games reside? :p

But to answer your point. 1) Most OOC games have high relevance to the PWR which is more important than if a team finishes second or third in the conference. BU rode that PWR road bonus by beating Quinnipiac to a higher seed last season. 2) If you were comparing goals scored to teams like UMass or Merrimack with poor OOC schedules you would have a point. However, the top programs, especially BU and BC, have generally strong OOC schedules (which benefitted BU also in the PWR last season).

Re: Hockey East Preseason Thread. Predict and Win Eternal Glory

Also NU returns forwards who played in a combined 214 HE games last year, BC returns just 137 (did a quick count, I may be slightly off on these). With 77 extra returning games from forwards I'd expect NU to be returning more than just 17 extra HE goals than BC.

Edit: Put another way, NU returns roughly 10 of their 12 forwards a night, BC returns about 6. Can the 4 additional forwards a night BC adds to their roster than NU adds to theirs account for 17 goals over the course of the HE season? Probably, IMO.

If not NU also returns 10 extra HE games from D, so BC could make up an additional couple goals there.

NU also returns Jim Madigan. Let's see if he was a one hit wonder.

And, avoids counting the two games in which the Huskies got swept my Bentley. Watch out again on 14-15 October this season. :D

The very thought of Bentley makes me break out in hives. Thanks for ruining my holiday weekend. :(

Maine's isn't as rough as last year's:

2x vs RPI
2x vs Quinnipiac (homecoming weekend)
2x at Miami
2x at Colgate
2x vs. AIC
1x vs. Brown (in Portland)
1x at UNH (in Manchester)

The point of providing both sets of numbers was just to say that the stat was true both in and out of conference, not picked in favor of one vs. the other. NU actually had a better winning percentage OOC than in-conference thanks to the HEA tourney.

Also, I think your tally of 81 goals is counting Couturier's 2.

Also NU returns forwards who played in a combined 214 HE games last year, BC returns just 137 (did a quick count, I may be slightly off on these). With 77 extra returning games from forwards I'd expect NU to be returning more than just 17 extra HE goals than BC.

Yes, NU returns more points from significantly more players, but NU also returns some players like Schechter, Pond, Jamieson, and maybe Schule who aren't expected to factor into the "best 18" this year barring significant injuries. By my count NU will have 4 new everyday F (Filipe, Jozefek, Pecararo, Lerario) and 3 new D (Some combo of Cecere, Shea, Davies, and Barry). I don't knew BC's roster nearly as well as our own, but from looking at their list of returning players, I'm seeing that there are 5 open slots at F and 3 at D, 3.5 if you only count Kim as 0.5. So the teams are dressing a roughly equal number of newcomers (BC +1 or 1.5) and NU still holds a large returning scoring edge even if you remove Schechter, Pond, Jamieson, Schule from their scoring numbers.

With those adjustments I count NU as returning 50 more HE games played (roughly 2.5 skaters per game) and 13 more HE goals scored (a reasonable amount for 2.5 skaters to score).

Re: Hockey East Preseason Thread. Predict and Win Eternal Glory

POY: Clayton Keller (BU)
COY: Dave Quinn (BU) - unless he messes up reaaaaal bad
ROY: Clayton Keller (BU)
Best Goalie: Cal Petersen (ND)

Standings
1. BU (by a country mile)

2. ND
3. Lowell
4. PC

5. BC
6. NU

7. MC
8. UConn
9. UVM

10. UNH
11. Maine
12. Amherst

Conference Tourni Championship: BU

NCAA: BU, ND, Lowell, PC

Coach Firing/retiring: York and Umile hang it up. Carvel finally realizes the hopelessness of what he signed up for and sets himself on fire like an Amherst futon. Leaman makes the jump to pro hockey.

Re: Hockey East Preseason Thread. Predict and Win Eternal Glory

If York never wins coach of the year because of all the talent he gets, hard to imagine quinn winning

Re: Hockey East Preseason Thread. Predict and Win Eternal Glory

A few comments about predictions posted here:

FiveHole12 usually highly undervalues BC in his predictions. If so they will win the NC this year. At the same time he usually gives a pass to the NC game for BU. They will probably go winless now.
Cannot understand why PC is being rated so highly. They lost even more firepower than BC and they were mostly a defensive team.
While Northeastern returns a lot of scoring keep in mind they need it to win those 6-5 games.
The supposed bottom of the league will surprise many this year. It will be much tighter than usual from top to bottom. It is imperative that the league makes a good OOC record as this may be the year where 3 or 4 Hockey East teams due to less than stellar league records from the closeness of the standings vie for the last NCAA tourney spots and OOC will determine that.
