So ASN did a Hockey East Season preview (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aORDk7r745U) with the depth of discussion you no doubt expected. A bit more than a month till season start, lets see who can predict

My best guess

I don't think this is going to be a very good year for Hockey East unless Northeastern has their form from the second half of last season all this year or one of Providence/BC/Notre Dame get a huge contribution from their freshmen class. I can't see much between the bottom six teams, drawing names out of
a hat would probably be as accurate as any prediction.

Last year wasn't a great year either...lots of the top squads just pounded on the bottom feeders.

Re: Hockey East Preseason Thread. Predict and Win Eternal Glory

To me a good year for league is teams in tourney because you don't move up the pwr just by beating crap teams. Last year was a great year for the league nationally. Wasn't a great showing in NCAA tourney though.

I liked the York pick for COTY. If there was ever a year he could win it, it would be this year.

You are delusional if you think Maine is going to finish in the basement or if Gendron is going to be fired. He just signed an extension for a good reason.

I wouldn't be offended. As I said in my post it is hard to separate 7-12 and you have to pick someone last. I dont know all the ins and outs of other teams and I doubt he does Maine.

I think a basement finish is less delusional than picking Maine 7th. I also think if Maine finishes last and has another disaster, Red may go. The athletic department can't afford to keep hemorrhaging fans and season ticket holders. This was the cash cow. Gendron leaving may just be the "WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING" panic move that is one step short of cutting the football, hockey or baseball programs.

OK, but think of how another coaching change would impact recruiting from a long-term standpoint. Would you rather start back at Square One (where we were when Whitehead was canned), or would you rather trust in a great coach like Gendron?

Picking UNH last also may be delusional, even if there is not much difference in 7 through 12. The UNH head coach may be on a mission for 600 wins and only has two remaining seasons to reach that milestone. I am not predicting that UNH will get home ice for the first round of the HEA post-season, but we should be able to avoid the dreaded cellar.

I'd be interested to hear what makes you so optimistic about Maine this season. I'm writing their preview for the NU Hockey Blog soon, and another perspective is welcome. When I look at Maine, I see no returning double-digit scorers, only 20 total Hockey East goals scored (lowest in the conference), no proven goaltender, major penalty issues coupled with a sub-par penalty kill, AND the loss of their best defenseman in Renouf....granted I haven't done my research on recruits yet for my post but I don't see much reason for any optimism, let alone a home playoff series.

What evidence is there that Gendron is a great coach? I see a career 38-61-13 record, with a decreasing win total every season from 16->14->8. That's half as many wins in his third season as his first! And fewer wins than Whitehead EVER had in a season!

Dick Umile wanting something is not going to help him win games.

Timmy made it to the national championship game two out of his first three years in charge, was that a good indicator of his coaching ability? Maine's heading in the right direction but it never was going to be as quick of turnaround as some preferred.

Who the hell predicted a umo turnaround?!? :p
