Hockey East Playoff Format (starting for 14/15 season) Rumor

Re: Hockey East Playoff Format (starting for 14/15 season) Rumor

That's not too shabby by any standard. We also consistently send some pretty decent players to the NHL.

No team in all of NCAA sports focuses more on their alumni than Vermont Hockey. None. I follow all the HE schools on twitter, and even during the NCAA season it's nothing but "hey remember St. Louis he was pretty awesome, right?". In 2011 it was all Tim Thomas all the time (before he lost his mind). It says a lot about the (sorry) state of a school's program when they talk more about what some current ECHL'er who graduated in 2005 is doing than focusing on their current team or incoming players.

One of the best things that has happened at BU in the last few years was when they went back to making the Hockey East Quarters an optional part of your season ticket package.

i dunno, the way i look at it is that you had a chance to use the tickets because you already bought them so the possibility exists that you could use the tickets. If you dont have to buy 'em there's less chance you go. i like the food commentary btw

And you're telling me this why, exactly? Someone who actively roots for Lowell on this board when UVM doesn't have a dog in the fight. Was merely making one point among several other points. Read into it what you may, but I think you're off base, at least with me.

So, let me ask you this, why are Lowell fans so sensitive when it comes to UVM hockey?

This thread could reach 1k posts within a week. Not too shabby for July.
Good job Nick. Pass the pop corn please. :D

Aside from the fact that the Board of Trustees attempt to eliminate Lowell was a witch hunt perpetrated by Amherst fanboys on said Board, is there any doubt in anyone's mind that they were trying to eliminate the wrong program? Lowell has been better than Amherst for about 90% of the time they've been together in Hockey East. It isn't even close.

Good point. Both probably should have been eliminated.

point being, talking about the league being better off if Lowell was contracted seems ridiculous given their success.

What success? Lowell had 1 good year. No different than Umass with Thomas Pock or Vermont in 2009 or Northeastern with Coach Crazy Cro and Tiffany Amber Thiessen.

I'll give 2011-2012 the bad news.

The 1 game playoff for the bottom 8 teams is not good. It effectivly sets up the likelihood that the Quarterfinals series will be waterd down and creates possible bad matchups. If Northeastern finishes 12th and then upsets the 5 seed, we would see the worst team in the league get beat down in a non-competive series against the top team.

yeah, because the first round series are all so competitive now. The number 1 seed is 38-9 all time. #2 is 45-5-1, #3 is 38-12, and #4 is 36-21-2. As far as going to 3 games, the 1-8 has done it 5 times, 2-7 4 times, 3-6 7 times and 4-5 8 times. #1 advanced 18 times vs. 4 for the #8, #2 24 times vs 1 for #7, #3 20 times vs 8 for #6 and #4 18 times vs 10 for #5. Note that during the early years #1 got an automatic bye to the semis, as did #2 a few times. HEA also used single elimination for a few years for the first round. Over the 5 or so years that they used single elimination, #8 beat #1 once. Except on rare occasions the top seed pretty much has its way with the lower seed. If the odd 11 or 12 seed happens to sneak through some year, expect the same thing to happen. The higher seed wins in 2 games, which it probably wwould even if the higher seed got through based on history anyway.

I might add that I think 1 and done makes for much more exciting games most of the time. The worse seed is much more willing and able to lay it all out there for 1 game than they are for 2 or 3. And when the better seeded team is in a close game late, it is often interesting to see how they react. I still suspect that the better seed wins most of the time, but the games are often better.
