Hockey East 2011 - 2012 :

Re: Hockey East 2011 - 2012 :

I feel precisely the same way. I'm a big ND football fan, but have been a big Hockey East fan for two decades now. So my question, with ND being #11, you're Joe Bertagna, I'm Mike Lynch, I leave you a voice message saying "you're in charge, you pick #12." Who do you take?

Given the current state of each program, I'd probably say RPI...

Re: Hockey East 2011 - 2012 :

Remember that RPI twice before was invited to HE, but the RPI admins nixed it. This post contains links to articles about the last time, and some about the aftermath of the first. (The Albany T-U archives don't go back to 1984.)

All sorts of things have changed since 1993.

As an alum of one of the smaller schools in HE, I'm conflicted by this. But I think it will help the box offices of certain schools (mine included).

#12 to me at this point has to be RPI.

All I guess I'm trying to say is that intercollegiate athletics are changing, and for the worst. I'm a huge college football fan and am sad to see the rivalries going away and the constant switching of programs from one conference to another. I wish Texas A&M would stay in the Big 12. I wish Syracuse and Pitt would stay in the Big East. Big East hoops tourney at MSG without Syracuse? Just doesn't seem right. It's all being done for the money. Why am I going off on a rant? It's because I'm a traditionalist. I wished HE stayed at 10, with all New England schools. I definitely don't want to see Connecticut or QU in the league. They have no history and are not very good. When Hockey East accepted UVM, they had tradition, NCAA appearances, former players in the NHL.

Maybe not though...

While the ND game will certinally be a big draw initially, the addition of ND and one other school probably means going to a 22 game schedule, which for you will mean less home games against BU, BC, Maine and UNH (also big draws). There will be more OOC games, and smaller programs like UML, have a harder time getting big name OOC games to play at their home arena, so you may end up with more away games, or even smaller non confrence games (from Atlantic Hockey etc), which will not draw well.

Re: Hockey East 2011 - 2012 :

Heh, clearly the 32 miles to the MA/VT border makes RPI from a whole other world. Unlike South Bend which is right outside Boston.

So you're telling me this whole time we haven't been talking about Notre Dame High School in Fairfield CT? :D:p

Ralph, do you think RPI would decline an invite to Hockey East again (assuming it were extended?)

irishfan, aren't you an MC guy? If so, your arguement is a bit shortsighted. When Hockey East accepted MC, any hockey tradition was at the DII level, maybe only 1 player in the NHL at that time (Hvrinak?) and a lousy rink.
I'd be okay with QU. Excellent facility, easy ride, pretty good fan base and I think they'd be a nice fit. IIRC, AD is a hockey guy (ex at BC and DU)and I believe they are really trying to build up the program. UConn? Meh, not so much. I don't sense that the school is committed to hockey.

Quinnipiac would be a much better option than UCONN. I agree. UCONN would be a DISASTER! I'd be okay with QU, but I'd prefer RPI. If we were trying to keep all New England schools, fine, go with QU. However, we've already lost the all-New England feel so I'd rather RPI than QU.

Fair point. I keep forgetting that the number of league games would diminish...

I don't think so. The problem has always been convincing the RPI admins. It appears to me that Seth Appert could sell ice boxes to eskimos, so it seems more likely that it will go through. I have the gut feeling that everything is in place already although I certainly have no inside information.

We'll see. Perhaps it will be announced when RPI is at ND on 10/21.

Re: Hockey East 2011 - 2012 :

I'd gladly take a smaller local program, a Qpiac or Bentley, along with ND. Only fair to try and grow the sport. But that's not the way the Crack Baby Hockey Association works..

Re: Hockey East 2011 - 2012 :

Neither is Notre Dame. ;)
Believe me, we know.

My preference (while I like Notre Dame) would have been to leave the league at 10 teams.
This.

Now that we have 11 someone in Joe B's office better be suggesting that we look at staying at 11 teams for now. One reason is that if this game of musical chairs continues Notre Dame will be pushed one way or the other - if they choose the ACC, wonderful, hockey can stay. But if they go to the Integer then hockey goes too and we'd be back to 11 teams. Are we going to dilute the HEA brand and raid the ECAC or AHA for a 12th team? Another reason is that the season is about to start and the focus should be on the games, not wondering if HEA will add a 12th team and whether that team will come from the ECAC or AHA. Either get RPI by Friday (they've surely been talking all this time) or say that HEA is going to table the search until after the season.

I don't expect any of this to actually happen. HEA will add a 12th team, and add that team even if its during the season.

Re: Hockey East 2011 - 2012 :

HE has strength in numbers though. The smart thing for the Conference to do would be to schedule a sort of HE vs NCHC/B10 confernce thing similar to what is done in college basketball now between conferences.

This would force those schools to have some play away games with some of the smaller HE schools.

It will also open up more possibilties for tournaments. A reducded conference schedule is really going to benefit BU, BC, and NU the most though since they already had a reduced number of NC games due to the beanpot.
