Hockey Canada Cup

Re: USA 7 Sweden 0

Re: USA 7 Sweden 0

Like Canada last night, the US hung seven on Sweden today. The Swedes were also shut-out for the second game in a row.

The First Period had a ton of Penalties 6 for the USA and 3 for Sweden. The Rest of the game featured just two additional trips to the box, both for the USA.

Valentina Lizana was in Goal for Sweden as apposed to Santa yesterday.

U.S. Women’s National Team Blanks Sweden, 7-0, in 2009 Hockey Canada Cup

September 1, 2009

VANCOUVER, B.C. – Hilary Knight (Hanover, N.D.) scored twice and 12 different players factored in the scoring to lead the U.S. Women's National Team to a 7-0 blanking of Sweden here tonight at the 2009 Hockey Canada Cup at GM Place. Team USA will close out preliminary-round play against Canada on Thursday (Sept. 3) at 7:30 p.m. PT (10:30 p.m. ET).

"I'm certainly happy with the energy we brought," said Team USA Head Coach Mark Johnson. "We played a full 60 minutes, competed the whole time and were rewarded for a very good team effort."

In the first period, Kelli Stack (Brooklyn Heights, Ohio) put Team USA up 1-0 with help from Angela Ruggiero (Simi Valley, Calif.) and Kacey Bellamy (Westfield, Mass.) at 5:54. The U.S. got into penalty trouble in the latter half of the frame, but held Sweden shotless for 20 minutes.

The U.S. gained a 4-0 advantage in the middle period with three additional goals. Caitlin Cahow (Branford, Conn.) flipped a rebound over Swedish netminder Valentina Lizana at 4:22, then the puck bounced off Natalie Darwitz's (Eagan, Minn.) chest and into the net during a goalmouth scramble at 7:49. Karen Thatcher (Blaine, Wash.) put the U.S. up by four with a breakaway goal at 14:03.

Knight roofed her first goal short side from the right post just :21 into the final frame and Molly Engstrom (Siren, Wis.) made it a 6-0 game with a shot that hit the post and went into the net at 4:26. Knight closed out the scoring with 1:22 left to play when she tipped Rachael Drazan's (Orono, Minn.) shot from the point.

Molly Schaus (Natick, Mass.) made 12 saves for her second career shutout in net for the U.S., while Lizana stopped 36 for Sweden.

NOTES: Team USA was 0-for-2 on the power play, while holding Sweden scoreless on eight chances ... The U.S. outshot Sweden by a 43-12 margin ... Caitlin Cahow, Natalie Darwitz and Kelli Stack all had three-point outings, with a goal and two assists apiece ... Raty did not play last night.

The one positive thing is that the US had 15 more shots than the Canadians on Finland. It will be a very good game Thursday. Should be fast and physical I am expecting over 4000 people there.

Re: USA 7 Sweden 0

Anyone know if Lawler played? And if not, is she injured?
I can't find a decent box score anywhere, but when the game notes are posted on the USA Hockey site later it should list the stats to date. Here are the game notes prior to yesterday's game.

Did Raty play for the Fins last night?

No, she was given the night off.

Re: Hockey Canada Cup

For anyone who's seen the games so far I'm curious to know how the Lamoureux twins are playing so far, and if they are playing on the same line, getting regular shifts. In the two games their total stats are:

Goals: 0
Assists: 0
Penalties: 4

No points out of the team's 9 total goals so far is a bit surprising.

Re: Hockey Canada Cup

US and Canada match up tonight at 10:30 PM on the east coast. Here are the game notes for tonight's tilt.

Re: Hockey Canada Cup

At the end of two, the US is up 1-0 on a goal by Mrs. Potter.

Re: Hockey Canada Cup

US comes out on top 4-2. The, ah...most experienced player, Mrs. Potter lit the lamp twice, as did Miss Knight-the youngest member of the Red, White, and Blue.

Next up is a rematch with Finland on Saturday.

Re: Hockey Canada Cup

Just curious on the format of this tournament.

The preliminary games provide more game experience for each of the teams, allow the coaches to evaluate players and try different line combinations, and perhaps most importantly sell more tickets and help cover expenses. But in terms of determining who actually ends up winning the tournament, they're pretty pointless, as you can go 0-3 in the preliminaries and still capture the gold.

I guess if you have only 4 teams and want each team to play 5 games, there isn't any other way, but the format still seems a little odd.

US 2 Canada 1

US 2 Canada 1

US takes the Hockey Canada Cup Gold Medal on Natalie Darwit'z game winner early in the third.

Ms. Vetter's career mark vs. Canada must be pretty good.
