Hobey Baker Top-10

Re: Hobey Baker Top-10

Hey...so the Hobey Hat Trick was announcd today.

Johnny Gaudreau, Boston College
Greg Carey, St. Lawrence
Nic Dowd, St. Cloud State

I'm not sure who Ryan Lambert is (apparently he's one of those supposed "writers" for Yahoo), but if you look at his Twitter feed he is SUPER butthurt about Dowd being there. Likely because he's from Boston and he's scared of another "lowly" SCSU player beating Johnny Hockey. I don't necessarily think Dowd will win, but what does it matter to this guy which other two players are there?

(Yeah, I thought it would be Gaudreau, Dowd, and Wilcox)

Gaudreau probably has it locked up but he shouldn't necessarily. Greg Carey put up a very respectable 57 points with a much weaker supporting cast and fewer games. He lead the nation in goals last year and assists this year. He has a 93 average GPA and is/was a serious student. He was active in community. He lead the team in scoring all four years. The Hobey is SUPPOSED to be more than just an MVP. It is supposed to be about academics, contributions in and outside of hockey. It isn't though. Gaudreau was runner up last year and will probably win it this year.

On Nic Dowd, he is an outstanding defensive forward so the argument can be made for him on that basis.

What I find offensive is that USCHO had some writer with an article on the front page before the hat trick was announced and his hatrick was Gaudreau, Wilcox and Gostisbehere. I don't fault him for his picks, but he didn't even mention Greg Carey as a finalist and that's just laughable. #2 in national scoring, leading assist man on #1 PP (a PP and a team without a single draft pick), an outstanding student. It's a good thing those writers aren't paid because that's just embarrassing.

Re: Hobey Baker Top-10

if you think it would have been laughable for carey to not be a hobey hat trick finalist, i'll tell you it would be even more laughable if gaudreau doesn't win. it's over, finished, done. the only drama is who will finish 2nd.

Re: Hobey Baker Top-10

and how can you not fault him for his picks but then torch him for not mentioning carey? doesn't make sense.

Re: Hobey Baker Top-10

and finally, you're citing carey's grades but you probably know nothing about gaudreau's...same goes for community service (and neither do i). the hobey isn't a career award, at least it shouldn't be. carey had a great year, might be good enough to finish 2nd.

Good Lord, I don't even know where to start with this.

Yes, Gaudreau has this necessarily locked up. Nothing that happened last year matters. Carey didn't lead the country in assists this year, Gaudreau did.

Do you know anything about the off-ice contributions and GPAs of the other candidates we don't know about? Or are you just assuming they can't be as good as Carey's?

Got to give Starman props, I doubt Dowd was a hat trick guy before Starman pumped him up.

And then scored the overtime game winner against Notre Dame after Starman's public display of jock-sniffing. Surely that didn't hurt either.

Re: Hobey Baker Top-10

actually glad hoky said something this time! hayes easily could have finished 2nd

So what is Gaudreau's GPA? I haven't seen it made public anywhere?

Dowd was a 3.61 GPA in Pre-Med and had decent off ice contributions.

Carey was All Academic all 4 years, was a candidate for ECAC Student-Athlete of the year, leading scorer at SLU all 4 years, ECAC scoring leader the last two years, finished with a 3.68 GPA, and he was the leading assist getter when SLU's season's ended and he wasn't playing with linemates like Kevin Hayes.

If nothing but hockey matters and total points, Gaudreau has it locked up. But the award talks about character, scholastic achievement, success at all facets of the game. Carey finishing second in points in the nation, with his academic credentials, and Elliot Olshansky's doesn't even mention him in his article prognosticating the Hobey Hat Trick which he scored 33% on. Sorry, that is just plain stupid.

Hokydad, you are amazing that you were able to watch enough games of Carey and Dowd to make that assessment. You are completely full of ****, as always! Every single game Carey played this year he had 1-2 players draped over him every second he was on the ice. Teams can'd do that against BC who has a deeper roster, deeper talent and more than one major threat on the line.

If Gaudreau has a 3.0 or better it would be great if that was mentioned. All any article says is that he is a communications major.

Hell even I had a 3.20 GPA as a Mass Communications major. Or course I double-minored in English and Comm Studies too.

Yes, I am destitute. lol

Re: Hobey Baker Top-10

the fact that it hasn't been mentioned anywhere doesn't mean anything. if i had the info i would gladly provide. regardless, no point in arguing with you because you can't even accept that it's not a career achievement award. do you have anything to refer to that would show poor character on gaudreau's part?

and again, you said you can't fault a guy for his picks but are faulting him for not having carey in top three. which is it?

while hayes easily could have finished 2nd behind gaudreau, i didn't expect it to happen because of being on the same team. fine, so be it.

nobody is criticizing carey, he's just in no way more deserving of this than gaudreau.

Re: Hobey Baker Top-10

Surprised they didn't get a goalie in the top 3. I read somewhere that if Gaudreau didn't score one goal this year, his assists alone put him in the top 25 nationally in scoring. That is incredible

Re: Hobey Baker Top-10

are you dave starman? i think you've changed my mind, hobey should go to dowd

Re: Hobey Baker Top-10

When was the last time an ECAC team member won it? Was it Lane MacDonald back in 1989?

1988-89 Lane MacDonald F Sr. Harvard

Didn't a St. Cloud player win it last year? They will never give it to St. Cloud two years in a row.

In World War II the best Battleship was the Bismark. However, it had no supporting cast so when the British sent their whole Navy against it, it could not win. St. Lawrence's Greg Carey playing forward for Boston College might very well have had better numbers that Johnny did, but it does not matter. The award, by elimination, is going to JG.

I am glad Carey is graduating and I am glad we do not have to face him anymore. He was IMO the best forward in the ECAC this year.

Re: Hobey Baker Top-10

We should. It's a heck of a lot harder to have a 3.60 GPA in pre-med than in communications.

Pre-Med is tough. He should know.
