Hobey Baker Top-10

I'm not quite sure why there is much debate about this. Johnny Gaudreau was far and away the best hockey player this season. The only time the "other" stuff is really factored in is if it's a very close race. To paraphrase a political saying, I think Gaudreau could have been caught in bed with a naked boy and a dead girl, and he'd still walk away with the Hobey Baker (okay, okay...maybe that is a bit of hyperbole). At the end of the day, nobody came close to matching Gaudreau on the ice.

I saw Carey dominate against North Dakota this season, and I saw Dowd play four seasons at St. Cloud. Maybe if they were competing against Gaudreau from last season there would be more discussion and the "other" factors would be legit talking points. This season? They should consider renaming the award after Gaudreau and change the likeness on the award to Johnny Hockey. His numbers are mind boggling.

*steps off soapbox*

ya but nobody has been able to prove that gaudreau is a rocket scientist

Re: Hobey Baker Top-10

it's not an mvp award. it's a best hockey player in the country award. if you could point out ANY character flaws with gaudreau, you might have a case here.

he is too short to play pro, which is where the best players are by the time they are his age.

:p:D:D

It would be one thing if he were ruled academically ineligible or something like that. Fact is, he could be rocking a 1.8 (or whatever BC requires of its athletes) in general studies (or Communications), and it still shouldn't be close as to who takes the Hobey. The decision hasn't been this clear cut in a loooooong time (I honestly don't really remember the last time there was one player who was head and shoulders...hell, knees and toes above the rest of the competition). It's a nice honor for Dowd and Carey to be in the Hat Trick. They are both excellent players and sound like class acts off the ice. They simply weren't at the same level as Gaudreau this season.

Re: Hobey Baker Top-10

Personally, I don't think anything is a lock. Look at Nathan Gerbe in 2007-2008. Led the nation in scoring, and arguably, he single handedly led his team to the national title. Didn't win the Hobey. 2007-2008 Stats

One player from an eastern school has won the Hobey since 2001 (Matt Gilroy). This year's Hobey is not a lock, IMO.
Hobey Winners

And you folks can read whatever you want into this... just stating some facts.

Re: Hobey Baker Top-10

when did voting end back then? also, we know gerbe had a lot of haters. gaudreau doesn't have that same reputation.

i didn't realize the western bias that has been going on for years though! ;)

Re: Hobey Baker Top-10

So what is Gaudreau's GPA? I haven't seen it made public anywhere?

Dowd was a 3.61 GPA in Pre-Med and had decent off ice contributions.

Carey was All Academic all 4 years, was a candidate for ECAC Student-Athlete of the year, leading scorer at SLU all 4 years, ECAC scoring leader the last two years, finished with a 3.68 GPA, and he was the leading assist getter when SLU's season's ended and he wasn't playing with linemates like Kevin Hayes.

If nothing but hockey matters and total points, Gaudreau has it locked up. But the award talks about character, scholastic achievement, success at all facets of the game. Carey finishing second in points in the nation, with his academic credentials, and Elliot Olshansky's doesn't even mention him in his article prognosticating the Hobey Hat Trick which he scored 33% on. Sorry, that is just plain stupid.

Hokydad, you are amazing that you were able to watch enough games of Carey and Dowd to make that assessment. You are completely full of ****, as always! Every single game Carey played this year he had 1-2 players draped over him every second he was on the ice. Teams can'd do that against BC who has a deeper roster, deeper talent and more than one major threat on the line.

If Gaudreau has a 3.0 or better it would be great if that was mentioned. All any article says is that he is a communications major.

Maybe I am but I know one thing, but he is a better player and was not minus 2 on the season.
You don't think Hayes had guys covering him, ask Denver how that worked. Montgomery looked like Rodney Dangerfield tugging his collar on that goal

College hockey is a small mans game, staggering what Hayes did at his size. Even more staggering is that he will be a better pro than college player..

Hobey is a lock this year. Gaudreau cured AIDS and cancer in the last month. He's just humble and felt including it in bios was merely bragging....

Re: Hobey Baker Top-10

Does anyone know if the Hobey ceremony is open to the public this year? It's usually at the rink but it looks like it's at some hotel ballroom this year?

Also Gerbe did not deserve the Hobey in 2008, sorry.

At the time the voting was done, Kevin Porter still led the nation in scoring. Same with the national championship, obviously after the voting. And even afterwards, the difference between he and Porter was small, unlike this year. And Gerbe had shall we say something of an unsavory reputation as a player. Just sayin'

Re: Hobey Baker Top-10

Davey Starman is getting rightly bludgeoned for declaring that someone other than Gaudreau will win this thing. On this week's podcast he had the ridiculous assertion that 'traveling' ought to be factored into the equation. As in, a player who has to go by PLANE to most games ought to rise above some plebe who only has trolley rides and quick bus trips for their away games. Starman declares he doesn't have an anti-BC bias, but long gone are the days when we 'believe' what media hacks say.

Re: Hobey Baker Top-10

in that case, now that nd is in hockey east, one of their guys should win every year. summerhayes was robbed! starman is just being stubborn at this point and is enjoying being the contrarian...oh well.

Re: Hobey Baker Top-10

There's some (very very small) credit you have to give to the guy for sticking to his guns with his insanely dumb thoughts on Nic Dowd, Johnny Gaudreau, travelling, and the Hobey race.

You absolutely must be joking

I'd say what I think of Starman and his hockey knowledge, in general (which is by and large made up of hockey cliche's), except that decorum prevents from using language like that in a public forum.

My parents always told me that if you can't anything nice about somebody, don't say anything at all.

So, I won't.

Your parents aren't here and we don't do decorum on this board....fire away.

Re: Hobey Baker Top-10

If Dowd or Carey does win it, how long do BC fans wait before they burn down Philly?
