History of USCHO

Re: History of USCHO

I wonder if there are any more treasures on that site like this one:

http://lists.maine.edu/cgi/wa?A2=ind9005&L=hockey-l&T=0&P=1162

" Now you've heard everything. Hockey East is apparently
petitioning to the NCAA to be allowed to change their league
games to two 25-minute halves! Talk about losing all the
credibility that they've worked so hard to build up. The
main reason for this, as expected, is the mighty dollar sign.
Cable tv thinks the games are too long. If I hear that
there's a serious chance of this actually happening, I'm going
right up to the commish's office myself and voice my opinion.
It would give me a good excuse for a vacation in Maine."

Can you imagine?

Wait.. from further reading it seems like the NCAA approved it and this actually happened... am I missing a strange bit of history?

I don't know about Maine, Providence and Salem State played a game with 2 30 minute halves in the mid 80's. It was weird!

Re: History of USCHO

WMPL in Houghton compiled all the national scores as well as the only college hockey poll in that era. Mrs. Olson was always very nice, although I am sure she got sick of reading the scores over and over....
Do you think she ever just tried to do them from memory if she was, um, occupied?

Re: History of USCHO

There was also a number you could call to get the game audio over the phone, long distance. It cost about $40 per game and had crappier reception* than listening to WFAN from Chapel Hill. My girlfriend of the time, bless her heart, was a Lynah fan who understood completely. :)

* Except, being analog, the signal never dropped out -- it just warbled. Analog so pwns digital.

Teamline, which somehow, still exists...

Re: History of USCHO

I wouldn't mind going back to the days of Mrs Olson. My team was relevant then.

Re: History of USCHO

I heard about USCHO for the first time when BU made the 1997 Final (Yes, I said "Final") Four. My first post was pure brilliance. I posted that whoever won the BU-Michigan game would win the Championship.

One of my favorite arguments, that spilled into nasty e-mails (See Jen's post above about everyone's e-mail address appearing right under user names.) was a classic East vs. West debate. You know, how the Western hockey was far superior to Eastern hockey, BU only got to all those Final Fours because they never played anyone good. Blah, blah, blah...

Re: History of USCHO

hockey-l was great for its time, though. For those of us who didn't spend their entire college careers typing usenet screeds on wesley.crusher.die.die.die, it was pretty dang cool to instantly communicate n-to-n in a specialized community.

Old hat now, but cutting edge then.

It was great because in addition to fans, coaches and players subscribed. I would trade emails with several Hockey East players for more information about things I'd written or just to talk trash. :p I imagine some players and coaches still read the threads on here, but no way they'd interact with us. :p

I heard from one graduating senior once that he was glad that he was graduating because now he could finally sign up and start posting. :p

And there is at least one former, WCHA coach that occasionally posts. ;)

Re: History of USCHO

I first visited USCHO in the end of 1996, and lurked for about a year. My first post (December 1997) was how excited I was that UNH tied BU after being down two late at home.

Some of the best battles were on those board. Everyone hated the BC fans (Mook W.; Chris!!!; just to name a few) and some of the best work by people such as Chuck M and Jon H. were born by smacking around the Superfans. (And I was a young college student, so I'm sure I was the model of fan board sanity  ).
