History of USCHO

Re: History of USCHO

i believe the TV show college hockey usa was where i first got my college hockey information. i miss that show.

where's hobart higgins?

Re: History of USCHO

You know it's bad when you have to call houghton MI

WMPL in Houghton compiled all the national scores as well as the only college hockey poll in that era. Mrs. Olson was always very nice, although I am sure she got sick of reading the scores over and over....

That came about in the late 80s. Jim Rich was the host and it was produced in Minnesota. For many, those grainy videotape highlights were the first time lots of us had seen some teams actually playing other than our local teams....

Re: History of USCHO

In the 80s, if you wanted all the weekend scores, you'd call WMPL radio in Houghton, Michigan on Sunday morning and Mrs. Olson would read them to you.

Low tech.
In 1991 there was a 900 number that gave you all the scores -- I remmber because I saw it on CHUSA and needed the score of game #3 of the Lake State - Clarkson NCAA Quarterfinal. I did not get to sleep until very late that night.

My wife did not understand what all the excitement was about.

She still doesn't. :)

That 900 number was a huge advance from the Days of Mrs. Olson.

She just couldn't figure out why you were calling 900 numbers every night of the week when the hockey games were only on the weekends. ;)

Re: History of USCHO

I know it really used to suck, if you missed the Sunday paper, you usually had to wait till later in the week, to see the conference standings, to find out if your team won over the weekend.

Re: History of USCHO

In 1990 I used to go to a porno magazine stand in Houston and buy a week old Sunday Denver Post for $5 to get DU scores, WCHA standings and if I was lucky a game story.

I usually bought a couple of issues Hustler or Finally Legal because I was too embarrassed to admit to the sales clerk I was a college hockey fan. :D

Re: History of USCHO

All through the 90's, I subcribed to the WI Sate Journal to get the WI game stats, the WCHA standings and the top 10 poll. The sucky thing is where I lived, and still do, I got the paper a day later because the WI St Journal didn't have a carrier out here so I had to get it in the mail. Sometimes I didn't get any for days, then I'd get 3 or 4 at one time. At least when I was living on Campus @ UW Whitewater 91-93, I got the paper every on time. Then in 2003 I found out about the USCHO in Sports Illustrated and the rest is history.

The first thread I ever posted on was some Rodent fan spouting off about the Rodents being "America's Team".

The first thread I ever started was one asking about who Mike Eaves' assistants might be.

The first thread I ever posted on was during the Exter/Eaves incident.

I don't remember what my first started thread was.

Not quite as, um, titillating, but we used to subscribe to the Duluth News-Tribune for the same reason. We'd get it in the mail a few days late.

There was also a number you could call to get the game audio over the phone, long distance. It cost about $40 per game and had crappier reception* than listening to WFAN from Chapel Hill. My girlfriend of the time, bless her heart, was a Lynah fan who understood completely. :)

* Except, being analog, the signal never dropped out -- it just warbled. Analog so pwns digital.

Re: History of USCHO

Hockey L was the first national college hockey message board started in 1990, but it was not as user friendly as this site, which evolved in the mid 90s.

Hockey L archive:
http://lists.maine.edu/archives/hockey-l.html

I wonder if there are any more treasures on that site like this one:

http://lists.maine.edu/cgi/wa?A2=ind9005&L=hockey-l&T=0&P=1162

" Now you've heard everything. Hockey East is apparently
petitioning to the NCAA to be allowed to change their league
games to two 25-minute halves! Talk about losing all the
credibility that they've worked so hard to build up. The
main reason for this, as expected, is the mighty dollar sign.
Cable tv thinks the games are too long. If I hear that
there's a serious chance of this actually happening, I'm going
right up to the commish's office myself and voice my opinion.
It would give me a good excuse for a vacation in Maine."

Can you imagine?

Wait.. from further reading it seems like the NCAA approved it and this actually happened... am I missing a strange bit of history?

Oh wow - I remember when that was in the works. I am so glad that never actually happened.
