Hey, We Suck Less Now: Michigan Tech Season Thread Part VI

Re: Hey, We Suck Less Now: Michigan Tech Season Thread Part VI

Tech topped Northern Kentucky 69-49 this evening in NCAA Women's Bouncyball Regional Quarterfinals. It was a pretty good atmosphere in the wood gym tonight, makes me wish for home hockey playoffs more.

NMU beat Indianapolis...interesting

Cheese and Rice. How in the heck do they have travel problems?? Short of a bus malfunction or the bus hit a moose, and thus not being able to get in at a decent hour, I'm not seeing it.

Their charter flight actually had issues...couldn't land because of fog...

Ahhh.... yeah, thats right, NCAA pays for that trip up. That would explain the flight up instead of the bus, 650 mile trip up to Houghton.

I think I just figured out a way for the NCAA to save money, instead of cutting the hockey season by a couple games.

Poke around the D3 forum a bit and yeah, I think you would find a few people there that would want to push the NCAA pays for Flights rule to being about 600 miles instead of 500 miles. ;)

They should not pay for flights for regionals for D2 and D3. They should be regionalized enough that teams can bus. Whereas the D1 sports aren't by region and teams can be sent across the country.

Re: Hey, We Suck Less Now: Michigan Tech Season Thread Part VI

Thoughts "from the rink" last night.

Tech played a very good game. Didn't look like the #50 team against the #1. The defense played will and I would say the SOG count was a little suspect. That said from 22 seasons of watching Tech DU games.

Don't know why the fans don't come out for games, but they are supporting the AVS either. Only 10,000 the other night when they were play for the division lead. Hockey fans show up. I've missed 1 game that Tech has played in Colorado since 1988. Tonight will be 85 in a row and 97 over all.

Need some consistent reffing tonight. Didn't see Dorrits hit, but did see a DU player put an elbow into a Tech head against the glass and a butt end of the stick to the head after the whistle in front of the net and no calls.

I'm guessing that Robinson will get the start based on last night. Thats a little sad since Genoe's dad is in town for the games.

Also guessing that Olson is out since he wasn't that health to begin with and didn't look good going off the ice last night. Didn't see what happened to Royer.

I don't buy that DU was flat and "tired" based on the article, since they scored in 37 seconds of the start.

Talked to Chris Durno after the game, but don't know if he went into the locker room.

Enough rambling.

GO HUSKIES

Re: Hey, We Suck Less Now: Michigan Tech Season Thread Part VI

some positive things to take out of this season.
Our special teams are a lot better than last year and the penalty kill especially was better at the end of the year.
I think they as a team played very hard all year.
I think our young guys will be a lot better next year and the goaltending is a lot better too, that's real good for next year.
We have to do a lot better on defense, especially not turning the puck over as much and coming out of the zone better, but overall we were in the box a lot less at the end of the year than at the beginning, and I think we improved a lot toward the end.
So let's just get ready and hope the new players show up and contribute. We have to have more talent but the work ethic is good and this bodes well.

Sweet. Does this mean the golf course will be open tomorrow? Because that would be ****ing awesome. I have a hankering for some swinging of the crooked stick.

Re: Hey, We Suck Less Now: Michigan Tech Season Thread Part VI

Well that's it's, one big takeway I have is how far this PK has come, it was horrible in Nov/Dec, very resepectable lately

I didn't get to listen to either game this weekend, but it sounded like they skated hard to the end.

And for one last time, Jamie's postgame thoughts:
I told the team I'm proud of them, under the circumstances, over the course of the year there's been a lot of adversity and injuries but they represented the school very well
I though everybody laid it on the line, we only had 10 forwards, they stepped it up
The one mistake at the end of the period hurt us, giving up the SH goal
Pete Hainen gave us good mins tonight
Our D core took a big step and played well, didn't give up many Grade A chances
Good to see DU get the quick whistle tonight to disallow a goal, we had 6 goals disallowed this year
Robinson played 2 of his best games as a huskie, very sold and confident, good reboudn control, fundamentally sounds this weekend
No question number 1 goalie is up in the air, Kevin was good as a true freshman, he needs to improve consistenancy
We feel good about our goalies going into next year
A lot of brightness at the end of the tunnel, 18 fresh and sophs getting good experience this year as they got elevated up the depth chart due to injuries

Kinda hard to do that when a lot of conferences have teams that are over the 500 mile mark apart. Off the top of my head, the GLIAC, the Lone Star Conference, Gulf South Conference, SIAC, and well heck, pretty much all the conferences west of the Rockies.

And do I need to remind you that the NCAA can't mandate that a team join one conference over another?? College Hockey America is going to be talked about enough this weekend. ;)

Did the GLIAC pay for Findlay to fly up to Houghton for the conference tournament? If not than suck it up...

Maybe if the NCAA didn't pay for this kind of travel it would encourage teams to actually join conference that make sense.

I believe the GLIAC chips in a little for travel when it comes to the Conference Tournement, but not flights, thats what the NCAA does for all playoffs. Keep in mind though that the NCAA doesn't have any problems sending a D1 Baskeball school all the way around the country for their games. Most of those schools have to travel more than 500 miles. Just think of how much money the NCAA could save if they worked the brackets so that they avoided travel.

Re: Hey, We Suck Less Now: Michigan Tech Season Thread Part VI

Re: the penalty kill. I was curious/dorky enough to crunch the numbers:

Before January 1st: 69/110 = ~62.73% success

After January 1st: 71/85 = ~83.53% success

Two fewer games factored into the post-New Years numbers, but a major difference nonetheless.

Additionally, if there is one thing that I got right, the powerplay was significantly improved this year. About the same number of goals as the past two seasons, but on fewer chances.
