Re: He's dead, Jim.

Yup. I saw these quotes from Mark Howe today in the Detroit News:

"Things are definitely headed in the wrong direction"
.....
Gordie Howe, 86, "is having a really difficult time here," Mark Howe is quoted as saying.
.....
Howe's situation is now in decline. In the Hockey News report, Mark Howe says Gordie has complications that include debilitating back pain, high blood pressure and anxiety.

Re: He's dead, Jim.

Mike Nichols, a titan of the film industry for nearly 50 years.

Mike Nichols, the director of matchless versatility who brought fierce wit, caustic social commentary and wicked absurdity to such film, TV and stage hits as “The Graduate,” “Angels in America” and “Monty Python’s Spamalot,” has died. He was 83.

The death was confirmed by ABC News President James Goldston on Thursday. Nichols died Wednesday evening.

His IMDB filmography here.

I see some of my favorite movies on that list....

Re: He's dead, Jim.

His direction of Catch-22 is amazing. Virginia Woolf not so much but that's a tough, tough thing to bring to screen.

That's the best review of it I've ever seen. It captures exactly what's great and what's just trite in the film.

Still, the first half of that movie is so freaking brilliant it's scary. And the final 15 seconds makes up for the dullard second half.
Elaine!
(granted that was before the last 15 seconds)

Every time I go through a glass walkway I am tempted to pound on the glass and shout "ELAINE!"

I have the same impulse whenever I'm at a wedding.

So far I have been able to contain myself, but if the bride's name is ever Elaine all bets are off.

The Norman Fell / Richard Dreyfuss scene is in the second half, as is driving over the Oakland Bay Bridge the wrong direction, so those parts can stay.

The great part is that in real life Elaine (Katherine Ross) marries a true man's man - Sam Elliot. What a voice!

Huh. That's one of the stranger H'wood couples. It makes me think higher of Katherine Ross (and lower of Sam Elliot).

Funny, I never noticed Katherine Ross' voice. I must have been busy elsewhere.;)

A few of us here are old enough to remember the comedy team of Mike Nichols and Elaine May. Incredibly funny sophisticated humor that was perhaps either ahead of their time or often over the heads of the viewers.

Two more illustrious alumni of Chicago's Second City.
