Educate could be part of the Cody Adams deal with Plattsburgh a couple of years ago. I think he's the "player to be named later" in that deal !!! He'd look good in Red !!

The real question is what will Heenan do with UAA only averaging about 40% non-conference home games the past 10 years :eek::eek: Will he then go on to bash Colorado College and Duluth for never playing games on the road?

No idea on the record, but in recent memory Mike Leone played for Utica, Adrian, Lindenwood, and Western Michigan. He was a pretty solid, regular player the last two seasons for Western.

Wouldn't be surprised if this is a move to let other D1 schools that he will listen and be interested if they came calling for a HC job. I just can't see him actually moving to Alaska...

Search widens for a new UAA hockey coach


..."What we really need is a coach who really has a lot of fire in the belly,'' Homan said.

Carlos Gomez said he didn't know Cobb and wasn't there to bash him, but wondered why it took UAA so long to seek a new head coach." It shouldn't take eight years to realize this program needed a change,'' Gomez said. The supplemental committee is likely to announce more finalists before month's end. Finalists will visit town for interviews and public forums.

Surprised nobody's posted more info about this. Heenan apparently removed himself from consideration, but there are some familiar names on the new list of 6 finalists:

• Michael Corbett, an assistant coach at Air Force for 10 years who last season was the associate head coach for the Central Collegiate Hockey Association team;

• Chris Brown, a former UAA assistant who is the head coach at Division III Augsburg College in Minnesota.

The other four finalists are products of the second search. In addition to Thomas, that group includes:

• Kevin Hartzell, the former head coach of two U.S. Hockey League teams, most recently the Sioux City Stampede;

• Dave Peters, an assistant coach at Dartmouth College of the Eastern College Athletic Conference since 1999;

• Ron Fogarty, program founder and head coach since 2006 at Division III Adrian College in Michigan.

Meanwhile, two coaches who were among the original four finalists don't want the job anymore -- Gary Heenan, head coach at Utica College, and Damon Whitten, a former UAA assistant. Both withdrew after UAA Chancellor Tom Case halted the original search a month ago.

Heenan said in an interview Monday the hiring process was taking too long.

"It wasn't fair to my team and my family," he said.

Thomas, 37, said he wants the job because he's eager to return to college hockey after more than a decade in the ECHL. Before joining Stockton in 2008, Thomas coached Fresno (2005-08) and Atlantic City (2002-05).

d3hockey.com had an article last night. I know it's the off season, but we're still on top of the important stuff on the worldwide leader for d3 sports.

As stated before, Ron's a finalist for the UAA job. It's a WCHA school that hasn't had a decent team in a long time. The search process appears to be a complete dumpster fire, with the AD getting canned in the middle of it all. Venture over to the D-1 board and read that thread. Make sure you take a pair of waders and a shovel if you do.

That program is a mess. I'm not sure it can be salvaged.

Heenan talked himself out of that dubious opportunity a while ago. (That's become a trend.)

He's better-off continuing to win at Utica and waiting for another opening, anyway, IMO.

The UAA situation is a complete mess, and there's no talent on that squad to build-around. He'd likely fare better building a program from the ground up than he would trying to salvage anything in Anchorage. There's just nothing much to work with there right now.

All the snide/lame BS aside, Heenan built a program that made teams want to come to him, and while playing all his requisite road-games against the best D-3 conference in the land.

All this harping on UC's recent schedules just illustrates certain posters' ignorance of how things work when you have a successful program in place, in any sport, and at any level... (How many OOC road-games has Alabama football played recently, for example?)

Heenan is plenty savvy- and Machiavellian-enough to win in D-1, IMO. He just needs to pick his spot wisely, and perhaps employ just a little more decorum.
