Re: Headline News Thread

She's not entirely wrong. She could have said it better. This kid should have been much smarter. I would love to visit places like North Korea, Syria (though not as much anymore since the cities are in ruins), Tunisia, and other extraordinarily dangerous places. It's just not smart.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Re: Headline News Thread

She's not wrong, but she is definitely a cunt, and propagating a stereotype of college profs. I'm sure if I head over to the right wing caves of the Internet, I will find this story plastered with comments like "Feminazi!", and "This is the kind of hatred for white men they teach at all of our colleges today!"

Re: Headline News Thread

*Edit* I didn't see this was posted in the cop thread. My mistake. Sorry. :o

Off-duty St. Louis police officer sees car crash near home, goes to assist at scene. Two on-duty officers see off-duty cop is carrying, orders man to ground, recognize the off-duty officer and let him stand up.

Off-duty cop is swiftly shot by third on-duty officer who just arrived on site.

Also: All three on-duty cops were white, including triggerman. Off-duty cop was black.

If you ever wonder if you're perpetuating racist commentary just flip the script and see if it sounds okay: "Blacks don't understand what racism is." hmm, can't tell though on that one if it's a fair assessment of a huge group of people who share a characteristic...

I know! For instance we all remember when the Jews in Nazi Germany caused all that ruckus!

Meanwhile, just coincidence I'm sure.

Washington Store Owner Sentenced To 8 Years For Killing Robber

A convenience store owner from Spanaway, Washington has been sentenced to 8 years in prison after shooting a thug who stole from his establishment.

According to Q13 Fox, surveillance footage from the March 25, 2016 incident shows 31-year-old Min Sik Kim asking a group of men loitering outside his store to leave.

While he was outside, 21-year-old Jakeel Rashon Mason can be seen attempting to steal cigarettes from behind the counter of Kim’s store.

The footage shows Kim and Mason subsequently engaging in a fight. Ultimately, according to Q13 Fox, Kim can be seen shooting Mason in the back as he flees.

Re: Headline News Thread

Can't say I'm either surprised or bothered by her termination.

Is it wrong of me to think she got exactly what she deserved?
I'm a little bothered by it. She wasn't advocating for his punishment, only saying that if you're going to trespass into unfriendly nations, expect severe consequences if/when you're caught.

So much for the integrity of holding forth an independent thought in academia.

I'm not sure I disagree with her on the facts. Her tact is a little harsh but should she be punished for that?

The integrity of holding forth an independent thought in academia has an operational definition: tenure. She didn't have it.

It sounds like she was a real as-s clown. I probably agree with her politically 99%, but I have no need to see her have a slot that someone with a little more circumspection and common sense could have.

She's not the hill I'm dying on.

It is, however, also true that if this had been a conservative mouthing conservative idiocies the entire Echo Camber would have wailed LIBURAL CENSORSHIP!!11!1 if he had been kicked out.

In a word, yes. That's beyond tact.

And here's the thing. The privilege that academic protection affords extends, in my opinion, to your own field. It is conferred because you've studied the facts of a situation and you know more than the conventional wisdom, so you should be allowed to hold forth contrarian positions. When you conflict with the masses you get to have your say because you're an expert and the masses are asses.

But this adjunct professor was just talking out of her as-s the same way you or I would about something she knows nothing more than you or I do. On this subject, she's just another opinionated f-ckwit.

Finally, having a knee-jerk reaction to straight, cis, white males is so 1988. Wake up to the new century, sweetie. You're not speaking truth to power, you're speaking last generation's dull-witted, over-generalized, ill thought out bromides to a new generation of students who are hungry to create their own generation's NEW dull-witted, over-generalized, ill thought out bromides!

Except it wasn't in the course of academic work. Just someone spouting off on social media. To me, the problem was the impression that him dying is him getting what he deserved.

The fact that a 20 year old white male didnt anticipate the full consequences of his actions isn't surprising nor is North Korea throwing the book at an American who violated their laws.

He certainly did not deserve to die for what he did.

She definitely worded what (I think) she meant very poorly. IMO, if you are an American, going to N Korea is idiotic. That being said, the kid didn't deserve what he got. Because of how she worded her thoughts...I'm not really bothered with her punishment.

Right. If he really wanted a souvenir that badly, he should have just gone on down to the gift shop in the lobby to get one, not trying to swipe it from the hallway. Heck, it wasn't that long ago when that tourist kid was in Singapore and got caned for littering. several good whacks on his backside with a bamboo stick as I recall it. And Singapore isn't nearly the shibbyhole that North Korea is.
