Re: He says he's not dead.

She was extremely talented and it always hurts to lose someone. But i will wait for the coroner's report before feeling too sorry. I had similar thoughts when Janis Joplin died. Just a waste of a life and thoughts about what could have been. I suppose I always feel worse when we lose someone and it is not their own fault.

This. And man, Queen Janis......

Why can't this crap happen to people like Beiber or Kesha or something? /Bill Hicks style

Brent-I wonder who the media will lay the blame upon? Of course it will have to be someone else's fault-perhaps the doctor's who wrote her prescriptions or the drug companies that made the drugs(if indeed it does turn out to be drugs). No one likes to believe that some people are just self destructive and are responsible for their own downfall. Saying this-just like janis-this girl could really sing and their voices will be missed.

She had a known history with drug abuse, more along the illicit sort, if the tabloid press is to be believed. I don't think this could be pinned on anyone else. That is, unless they go after Bobby Brown for ruining her mental state and pushing her in that direction, or something. Unlike Michael Jackson, I don't think this can be pushed back to a professional in anyway even nearing legitimacy.

Re: He says he's not dead.

We all know that woman motorboated piles of coke like Tony Montana. Too bad, really.

We didn't lose a voice this week, we lost a voice almost two decades ago.

Re: He says he's not dead.

It's too bad she got involved with Bobby and the scourge of drugs.

She had a real nice voice and great talent, enjoyed her music immensely.

RIP Miss Houston.

I've been reminded of Judy Garland this weekend.

When it comes to the self destructive behavior in the very successful-I wonder if the differences we see are related in any way to how that success was achieved? Do those who work long and hard to reach the top of their profession have less tendency for it than those who reach the top quickly and have access to all the sudden wealth and fame?

I think Judy Garland was much more of a victim. She was a child star, the studio heads were in loco parentis, they got her started on pills to control her weight... if you wanted to deliberately screw somebody up for life it would be hard to do a better job.

Also, there are that many more cautionary tales. A Whitney Houston has a Judy Garland to look back on and think, "take it easy, girl." And more importantly: these people making money off you are not your friends.

It might be the opposite. People who will sacrifice everything and everyone to their ambition may be a lot more screwed up than the schmoe who just falls into fame. The very topmost people in any field -- from entertainment to sports to business to science to art -- are very likely to be the most driven, and hence the most toxic in the other aspects of their lives.

I would agree with this. Pretty difficult to have a huge talent at anything without being different enough from everyone else to warp your world.

Still, I was reminded of Garland.

It doesn't work that way with drug addicts. They always think that they are different from everyone else who fcked up. Ego often plays a big role in fueling addictions.

There's also the Louis C. K. joke: "a man is as faithful as his options." Even if celebs displayed a Gaussian distribution of character, a far greater number of them would make spectacularly bad life decisions just based on access. It's harder for Dorothy in Kansas to get up to no good.
