Has your team ever been ranked?

OK, let's say you're a fan of some highly successful D-III hockey school, like Plattsburgh or Norwich. Your teams are in the thick of it every year, and consistently get praise from the voters. Take a moment to smile at your teams ongoing success.

Now, let's say you're a fan if a school that doesn't get that much love in the polls. A team that's consistently weak (Northland, Framingham State). Or, a team that was really good 5 years ago, but can't put it together anymore (Concordia MN, <strike>Lebanon Valley</strike>). Or a team that does really well, but are frowned upon for playing in a "weak" conference (Fitchburg State, <strike>Marian</strike>). Maybe you would like to think, "Was my team ever any good?" Maybe you'd ask yourself, "Have we've ever been ranked?" or "Have we ever gotten votes in the national poll?"

Well, because someone asked somewhere, and because I have plenty of time to kill. I took a dive through the poll archives and compiled some lists of all of the teams that have ever been ranked (or gotten votes) in D-III hockey.

These lists use the USCHO D-III poll, and go back to the start of the 1998-99 season (the last season where all of the polls were available). I don't know if this has been done before, but as I said earlier, I've got time to kill.

Note: The number of voters and spots in the poll have changed over the years. The following list reflects that.
Code:
10/19/1998 - 3/8/1999 -- 10 spots, 10 voters
10/20/1999 - 3/8/2002 -- 10 spots, 15 voters
10/16/2002 - 3/5/2007 -- 15 spots, 15 voters
10/15/2007 - present -- 15 spots, 20 voters

(All lists are current as of 1/10/2011)

The following is a list of teams (in alphabetical order) that have been ranked for at least one week in the USCHO D-III poll since the 1998-99 season (along with the last time they received vote(s) in the poll)

Very cool. thanks!

The only question I have is how many times have each of the programs that have been ranked in a poll appeared there. I'd be curious to know if a team like St. Norbert has been in every poll since they started keeping track because it seems like SNC became a powerhouse right around then.

Re: Has your team ever been ranked?

Very cool thread! I'm actually pretty surprised neither Brockport nor Buff State have ever gotten even a single vote, cause I know there have been stretches where both have been pretty decent, even if it was just for weeks at a time.

I think it'd be really interesting to see the highest rank that each team on this list has achieved, too.

Re: Has your team ever been ranked?

St. Norbert has been ranked for 152 consecutive weeks/polls. I don't know how far back that goes.

It is most likely that Brockport’s 1973-74 team (15-7-0) & Western NE College’s 1993-94 (15-7-1) would have had a period where they were ranked under the current USCHO system, along with those that obviously would have been ranked: Framingham State – 1972-73 (25-4-0), Plymouth State – 1976-77 (11-1-0), Suffolk – 1990-91 (22-5-0), Worcester State – 1971-72 (21-3-0) and Westfield State’s 1978 ECAC Hockey Championship team. That would leave only the following six yet to achieve “rankable” status: Becker, Buffalo, Concordia (WI), Northland, Salve Regina and upstart University of New England. IMO, better than I would have expected.

Re: Has your team ever been ranked?

Very cool. thanks!

The only question I have is how many times have each of the programs that have been ranked in a poll appeared there. I'd be curious to know if a team like St. Norbert has been in every poll since they started keeping track because it seems like SNC became a powerhouse right around then.

Thank you for the compliments.

I'm willing to go back through and record these. I won't have them done tonight though (I'm watching the NYI-PIT game). However, I'll get started after the game, and finish up tomorrow.

(Random note, it only took about two hours to compile those lists)

Re: Has your team ever been ranked?

OK, I went back through the archives and added a few more lists. Some things I noticed:

-I was surprised to see that only 11 teams (since October 1998) have held the #1 spot. One of them (RIT) plays D-I now, and four of them were only #1 for three weeks or less. That list shows who the real dominant teams are.

-St. Norbert really has some staying power. Can't say if it's name recognition or top of mind awareness or whatever you want to call it. The point is, they've put together quite the impressive streak (by my count, the Green Knights have been ranked 149 straight weeks). The last time St. Norbert was unranked? February 26, 2001.

-However, that streak isn't as long as the one Middlebury has. By my count, Middlebury has been ranked for 171 straight weeks; and since October 1998, have only been unranked once. Again, kudos to Middlebury.

-Finally, true story. Last week, I was talking about Fitchburg State with my dad about the fairly impressive season they've been having (I'm from Fitchburg, it's only logical that I talk about them). When he asked if they're nationally ranked, I mentioned that they've received no votes at all this season, and that "Fitchburg will only start getting votes when Middlebury falls out of the rankings." Turns out that there might be more truth to that then I first thought:
From January 3, 2000:
Others receiving votes: Middelbury (sic) 15, Bowdoin 5, Salem State 4, Fitchburg State 3
Turns out the last time Middlebury was unranked just happened to be the last time Fitchburg State got any votes in the poll. Strange, isn't it?

Not to get too greedy, but would you be interested in making a consecutive streak list?

Either way, this is phenomenal. Thanks man.

Done. They are in the main post.

It's a good thing that Microsoft Excel is really useful. No way I get any of this done without it.

Awesome again. Thanks. Also, I think Norwich needs to be bolded as well. Appreciate all the time you've put into all this.

Re: Has your team ever been ranked? (and other D-III poll related lists)

Or, a team that was really good 5 years ago, but can't put it together anymore (Concordia MN, Lebanon Valley). Or a team that does really well, but are frowned upon for playing in a "weak" conference (Fitchburg State, Marian).

(All lists are current as of 2/8/2010)

Outstanding post...above and beyond anything I would have thought someone would actually do when I asked about it in another thread.

I'm rather surprised, Morrisville has received votes but Buffalo State and Brockport have never received votes.

I especially enjoyed the "# of weeks that teams appeared" list you got. Certainly does show name recognition.

Re: Has your team ever been ranked?

There's one glaring omission from this one way or another and it's a school that no longer has a program but did back when you began your tallying your research.
