Harvard Women's Hockey 2011-2012: Taking the Next Step

Re: Harvard Women's Hockey 2011-2012: Taking the Next Step

I thought I might as well get a new thread started seeing as the season is almost upon us. Very nice article in today's Boston Globe about Coach Stone:

We're awfully young this year although we seem to have good depth up front. Thoughts on how the season willplay out?

It certainly should be interesting as we will hopefully see the maturing of some talented Upperclassman Forwards who will need to find a way to put the puck in the net. The true strength of this Team will be in their Defensive corps, with their veterens and the addition of 2 very gifted Freshman.

Interesting historical note from this article: Women's Hockey Kicks Off 2011-12 Campaign Against ECAC Foes St. Lawrence, Clarkson

Historically Harvard
Harvard has a storied tradition within the women's college hockey ranks and in 33 years of existence, the team has compiled 25 winning seasons, including nine with at least 20 wins and four with 30 or more victories.

Since Harvard captured the 1999 AWCHA National Championship, the team has compiled the fifth-best winning percentage in the country and the highest among eastern teams during that span. Here are the teams with the top 10 winning percentages beginning with the 1999-2000 season:

1. Minnesota (352-83-31) .789
2. Mercyhurst (310-85-24) .768
3. Wisconsin (334-91-36) .764
4. Minnesota Duluth (316-90-34) .757
5. Harvard (278-92-28) .734
6. New Hampshire (285-108-38) .705
7. Dartmouth (260-111-23) .691
8. St. Lawrence (289-127-38) .678
9. Clarkson (150-101-38) .585
10. Providence (228-157-50) .582

I guess while we're at it, from the Athletic Dept.:

Crimson Idol

The Harvard women's hockey team showcases its talents on the first road trip of the 2011-12 season.

Beatdown of SLU tonite. In their building no less. Looks like a second division finish for the Saints. Great start for the girls!

They definitely dominated the final two periods. Hard to judge the Saints by their performance against Harvard, though, as SLU has had Frozen Four teams that had zero success versus the Crimson.

Agreed except the games between the two schools are usually close especially up at Appleton. That is why it was surprising to me to see how dominant the Crimson were in periods two and three. Especially with such a young team (only one senior, none on defense). It has to bode well for us despite the fact it is only one game opening the season. Long way to go.

Re: Harvard Women's Hockey 2011-2012: Taking the Next Step

Sweep for the Crimson this weekend. OT victory over Clarkson with Marisa Gedman getting the winner. Nice way to start the season especially considering that the Saints and the Knights had a head start having played several games before the Crimson played their first.

This is stunning. Thought this was to be a building year. Also notice only 18 players on the roster, three familiar faces missing. Does anybody know what's up? The sophomores appear to be having Tyler Seguin second seasons!

Hello fans of Harvard Hockey-

I just wanted to quickly touch base with you in regards to the Goals For Good project. In short, it's a competitive goal-a-thon between every team in the ECAC, and every team has partnered with a charity in close relation to their team, school, and or community. We're currently looking for more prizes, but as of now, there is $1,000 on the line going to the local food cupboard of the team that raises the most money. Please check out www.goalsforgood.org to learn more and support your team and their charity by way of their goals and wins.

Thank you,
Kevin McNamara

We do have a short roster which will hurt us especially this weekend with Pucci, Dempsey and Picard at the Four Nations. In the women's preview on YouTube, Katey Stone talked about a commitment to training both on and off the ice. She singled out Lyndsey Fry in particular and I'm sure that is why her first weekend against SLU and Clarkson was so impressive. This team may surprise a lot of folks before the season is over. Including Cornell.

Where is goaltender Lauren Joarnt I don't see her on roster?

I believe she quit the team prior to the start of the season. That's what I was told.

Do we know what happened to Jackie Young and Whitney Kennedy? Young was a rising sophomore and Kennedy would have been a junior. Young's loss hurts on D because we lack depth back there.

Re: Harvard Women's Hockey 2011-2012: Taking the Next Step

What happened? Grades? Couldn't have been playing time because she was set to be a regular this season.
