Harvard Crimson 2017-2018

Harvard was definitely outclassed tonight. Thoughts:

1) This team has so little margin for error given scoring issues. Everyone is gripping their sticks
2) Byce & Lloyd need to play better. Underachieving big time (and so is Sherman)
3) Where have you gone, John Marino
4) Really like Bowlby, Badini, and Walsh - 3 solid frosh to build on
5) Madsen was really good. Tough to take the L after playing so well and Sherman standing in no man's land on the GWG, but hopefully is something to build on. Harvard needs him to win/steal games this year

ECAC is very subpar this year and so is the East. Think it's going to be anyone's game come March (Clarkson included). Don't see any team going on a deep run, but time will tell. Lots of hockey left and lots of time to get better

No disagreement except I'm not sure about the ECAC overall. Maybe not as strong as in years past but let's wait and see how it plays out. Long way to go before March.

I'm sort of disappointed in the D so far. Thought they would be a little better. Maybe a lot better. Jake Olsen and Sherman in particular. They should be taking their games to the next level. Maybe Sherman deserves to sit a game or two as a message?

Agree that the D has been disappointing. Wiley watching the puck on the GWG Saturday was painful. On the other hand, Merrick is proving again the he is an elite goaltender. Had that look in his eyes Saturday night.

ECAC isn't great this year; Harvard's 2 non-conference losses this weekend don't help.

I think they'll be okay.

Clarkson has the same result against a Minny earlier in the year (if Clarkson is the so called darling of the ECAC this year)

I think so too. They've lost some very close games that could have easily gone their way with a little puck luck. Lost to Colgate after out shooting them something like 31-19, lost to Cornell in the last second, lost to Minnesota in OT. These games could have easily gone the other way.

Team is playing better than their record, but they still need to take their game up a notch. First they need to bury more pucks - maybe make more plays, develop better chemistry, and the power play needs to be better (don't think we scored a PP goal in Minnesota)... Second, need to make fewer mistakes - limit turnovers (that killed us against Yale).

We have great goal tending, supposed to have one of the best defenses in the NCAA, and we are supposed to have a deadly power play. I think they will do fine.

The game winning goal on Saturday was reminiscent of the winning goal at the Frozen 4 in Chicago when Pearl/Danato put Marino out in the last minute of the third period. Marino went all the way over to double cover a check on the left boards, abandoning his post leaving his check wide open with no coverage. Sherman wasn't watching the play, he couldn't believe his eyes when Marino did the same thing again with the game on the line. This time a Gopher is sitting all alone on the post for an easy tap in.

Unfortunately, the left side of defense has no ability to turn and make evasive moves to put the opposition off the puck and right side is more offensive than defensive and speed is an issue all around except for Walsh. Defense also lacks the ability to limit Madson's exposure to too many options to cover them all. He is doing fantastic under these conditions. The left side Defense has what I call "Cardboard cut-out Defense" old school like Danato, they are just big long sticks that speed can kill all day long. Just send your guys down the left side and punch your ticket to the net. Everyone says Sherman isn't doing enough, hell he is trying to do too much, he is taking it on himself, he can see they are short a guy all night long. Olsen on the other hand is not checking anyone, why is he guaranteed a spot. I am surprised dumbrovsky is not dressed yet, played all playoff games the previous years and from what I have seen from his 6th Dman minutes he adds something different than a turnstile.

Last year Harvard had an experienced forward group that could IQ their way out of the zone. The pressure is on defense now to be mobile and elude fore checkers that know forwards are not experienced and require the D to create time and space. Right now the left side is locked out. Time to start rotating players in and out before it's too late.

Yeah, goals per game at only 2.29 is pretty low. Another stat that jumps out ( https://www.collegehockeynews.com/stats/ ) is Shooting Percentage of only 8% - which is near the bottom of the pack. Obviously, that needs to be more in the 10-11% area, or higher. I think 8% is evidence that we aren't moving the puck well and taking too many poor quality shots.

I hope you're right. Still not seeing enough from the forwards to convince me that they will all of sudden start burying pucks and scoring at 4 goals a game. I do think the D is better than what they have shown so far. Madsen has been good to great but has had lapses that we can't afford if we are going to win some of these one goal games.

On to BC tomorrow. We're catching them unfortunately on a hot streak so we'll have to be extra sharp.

Interesting article in the Boston Globe this morning. BC coach Jerry York talking about his team's slow start. Reading the article, a couple of similarities to Harvard's slow start popped up for me. First, both teams have similar records after 7 games (BC was 1-5-1, Harvard 2-5). Second, goals scored. BC had 12 in seven games; Harvard has 16. York mentioned that a lack of experience contributed to his team's slow start. One could argue that Harvard's lack of experience or skill up front has contributed to their start. BC has turned it around lately and perhaps with this game, Harvard can start their turnaround. Certainly hope so!

Love the new lines (top 3) though still lack of chemistry. PP anemic. Reilly Walsh needs to shoot puck more. Horrendous give away by Fox led to 2nd BC goal. Floodstrand missed an open net after making a nice move across the crease.

4-4 at BC. Will take it but a very winnable game. If Harvard starts to finish the gimmes and stops the giveaways, I think they are going to be fine. Certainly trending in the right direction even if scores don’t reflect it.

Badini is going to be some player when all is said and done.

Need 3pts next weekend at Quincy and Princeton.

On last night's broadcast of the Tampa-Bruins game, NBC analyst Pierre Macguire mentioned that he visited Bright Landry and watched the men practice on Tuesday. He singled out Ryan Donato and Wiley Sherman as being in the pipeline of Bruins prospects ready to come aboard. As for the game, I was disappointed that Alex Killorn has been dropped to the third line for Tampa. He's better than a bottom six forward. They should put him back at center.
