Harvard crimson 2017-18

Re: Harvard crimson 2017-18

Well I decided not to drive to Worcester to see the second Holy Cross game and I could not find it on cable.

Harvard did not post the usual box score on the website and Holy Cross posted a box score but did not post a losing of penalties, just the total of 4 penalties totaling 19 minutes with no details as to for what and by who.

The only way I can get to 19 minutes is two minors plus a major and a ten minute misconduct. Can anybody fill me in on what happened?

ARM -

Thank you very much, I was curious. No idea why Harvard Athletics did not post the box.

Re: Harvard crimson 2017-18

Interesting, but despite being listed as a captain, Laing is no longer listed on the Harvard website roster. She must have withdrawn.

The Harvard Crimson, not to be confused with the women’s team’s hockey website, reported Nov. 13 that Laing “would be out for the rest of the season” due to injury. So these things are no secret to undergrads, or rather no secret to undergrad journalists, but seem to call for complete radio silence when it comes to fans at large, thereby promoting puzzlement and speculation. I don’t know why simple transparency (also known as basic information), especially if there is no ostensible reason for confidentiality, should be such a moving target when it comes to certain college teams. Having to read tea leaves from roster changes does a disservice to the fans who support them.

It is unclear what is happening. I know Lexie missed the McGill exhibition game and that she played the games against Dartmouth, Princeton and Quinnipiac but nothing since October 28th.
Last year her sister Denna came to almost all the home games. I have not seen her this year but I have assumed maybe she has a new PT regime or has started back to school. I believe I saw Lexie's mum at the Friday Holy Cross game.

I guess we will find out eventually

It's a HIPAA violation for the schools to release medical information about a player. And fans may not feel that it is their place to share private medical information about a college student with the general public on a public message board unless they personally know the player and know that it's okay to do so.

So of course it makes the most sense that there are undergrads who are friends with Lexie (or friends of friends) who know what is going on rather than some people on a message board who don't know Lexie from Eve.

Re: Harvard crimson 2017-18

It's a HIPAA violation for the schools to release medical information about a player.

But not with the athlete’s consent, as I understand it. The problem with HIPAA-induced ignorance is that you get hopeful expressions of return to action on the one hand and statements of possible “withdrawal” on the other. I realize that the regulation’s intent is not to keep fans happy, and indeed is not primarily in place for college athletics, but I think that schools should encourage their athletes to waive confidentiality when it is appropriate to do so, and then make even a minimally informative team statement of unavailability or whatever. There should be no presumption that athletes will waive their rights, but de facto informal networks that get the word out don’t always act quickly or accurately enough to prevent useless speculation.

HIPAA is thorny, but more so than KRACH, RPI and PWR? You’ve helped us work our way around them. Surely the federal government can’t be as challenging . . . :)

Harvard 1
BC 8

A bit disappointing !!

Well the question as to where Lexie Laing is was answered tonight. She was at Bright-Landry tonight on crutches watching the game with her sister Denna.

Lexie had hip surgery and is apparently out for the year. Sad to learn that, nice kid and good player

Re: Harvard crimson 2017-18

My not watching didn’t seem to affect the outcome at Schenectady. (Truth be told, everyone but the losing team appreciates a Union turn-around.)

Harvard with 15 skaters yesterday, 14 today: no Tse, no Hallett, no Dani K, with Colbert off the roster after 9 games, while Warner has no recorded ice time at all (?). Never mind. They’ll be in fine shape for BC after they tune-up with Colgate next weekend.

No doubt about it, it's been very frustrating this year. Time and chance happeneth to us all. In addition to the current injuries, just think, two years ago when we looked ahead to this season we would have expected to be seeing an additional forward line, consisting of of Laing-Heffernan-Zarzecki, out there. We now have a very small, very young team, but can enjoy some good play this year from them and clearly look ahead to better times.

Re: Harvard crimson 2017-18

Tied for ECAC #1, ( #3 PWR ) #4 'gate moves past last weekend's sweep to Harvard/Dartmouth in the coming weekend.

A. O. Jan 8, 2018 ,The Schedule trumps “seat of the pants eyeball tests” as predictors of 2017-18 regular/post-season

Despite agreeing with some of the reservations expressed about this team’s on ice performance, the reservations become background noise now. At this point, I consider observations like this, made during the season, less important, even if the accuracy of the observations persist: a. not being an “elite” team, b. having “unconvincing wins,” c.“struggling, d.” being “overrated in the polls,” e. “struggling vs. any Top PWR team,” etc.
Everything is subordinated to finessing the schedule from here for maximizing what are significant accomplishments for 'GATE WIH's year and the culmination of a marvelous 3 year program renaissance. The risk-reward of this path will change week-by-week in the six weeks of regular season play remaining. Knowing what's significant and yet likely-doable for this team is important now. I think my goals are attainable. Let’s call it the "slipping under the radar scenario." My ultimate goal is satisfied by: 1. smartly exceeding the record 22 win seasons of 15-16 and 16-17, 2. making it to the ECAC Final via a win as 2 or 3 seed in the ECAC Tournament bye and semi-final rounds and 3. maintaining a top 4 PWR post season-getting an invite to the 2018 NCAA tournament-w.o an ECAC Championship and regardless of NCAA seed.

1. Clarkson- the odds on favorite. Even dropping a 2nd game to ‘gate may not prevent ECAC championship on their ice ? Don’t have to beat them to get to NCAA.
2. Colgate-13 games left; 7 at home over next three weeks. Harvard this weekend and St Lawrence-Clarkson on 1/26-7 are the "biggies"
3. St. Lawrence-3 pts out of 1st, might upcoming game @ Colgate determine who gets 2nd or 3rd place ECAC RS position ? How much does it matter ?
4. Cornell- dropped two games this past weekend and fell 4 pts behind. Playing the same schedule as ‘gate, can they make it up with the same 12 remaining games as ‘gate ? No wiggle room with Clarkson, St Lawrence and arch rival Harvard ( 2),

5. Harvard: 2 games each left against Clarkson, St. Lawrence, Cornell and Colgate. Need I say more about probability of being a factor ?
6. Quinnipiac- Their 16 pt. ECAC 1st place tie this week is virtually meaningless. They only have 8 ECAC games to play while the rest of the league has 12.

Re: Harvard crimson 2017-18

Thanks for posting here. Are you sure you're not nervous about Harvard? :)

Definitely nervous about Harvard-'Gate games. Always a tough game for Colgate. For post-season posturing, 'Gate can't afford any losses through season's end.
But, the C-H h&h's significance is not consequential because H's remaining schedule is a killer for post-season jockeying. Harvard has a big challenge ahead in the next 6 weeks: h & h's with Clarkson, Colgate, Cornell and St Lawrence. Quite a gauntlet of 8 tough games. They won't win all of them.
