Harvard Crimson 2016-2017

Re: Harvard Crimson 2016-2017

Projected Harvard forward lines next year:

1st Line - Badini - Donato - Zerter Gossage
2nd Line - Lloyd - Pelton Byce - Krusko
3rd Line - Gregoire - Perrault - Horton
4th Line - Kerfoot - Ellis - Floodstrand

Extras - Bowlby, Szeto, Solin, Donato

This team will be very different offensively from last year. I expect the PP to be very, very good given Donato and a multitude of D that can pass and shoot the puck. The 1st line should be very good, but the other lines are more about depth. Be interesting to see what strides some players (Krusko, Pelton Byce) can make in their 2nd years.

Unless his dad thinks otherwise, I don't see how you keep Jack Donato out of the lineup. And I don't think Pelton-Byce is ready to be a second line center. He wore down as the season went along and you could tell he needs more seasoning. I think the coaching staff will be experimenting with lines 2, 3 and 4 in the early part of the season. And as Floodstrand came on towards the end of the season, I expect him to make a jump this year as well.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2016-2017

Quick update from last night's game between the US and Canada. Good news is that Fox has indeed escalated his game and Badini looks like he could be the second coming of Peter Ciavaglia. Big kid who plays a 200 foot game, wins face-offs, goes to the net with a strong wrister. He'll be fun to watch.

Between periods, they interviewed the US Olympic coach Tony Granato. They asked him about Adam Fox and Granato didn't hesitate to say he's in the running for a spot on the team. Granato also added that there will be a tournament in Germany the first week of November that the US team will play in and all players trying out are expected to attend. That means we could be without Ryan Donato and Fox for games against Yale and Brown at B-L. Ouch. Not the way to start the year but whatever...

I always thought Jack was a stretch for D1 / Harvard, but a great way to be with the family and get a great education. Perhaps this perspective is incorrect?

Agree on Lines 2-4. What I put forth was my best guess which is really just that.

I haven't seen him play so I'll take your word for it. And there is always the nepotism factor.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2016-2017

Certainly not in the ECAC given the playoff experience from last season. Hey Nashville parlayed a strong puck moving D into a Stanley Cup finals appearance. This may be the way hockey is trending.

Harvard will have the 2 best players in the ECAC (Fox & Donato), by a considerable margin. Both should be locks for 1st Team ECAC, All Americans, and both will be Hobey hopefuls along with some boys from Denver. The question is whether Harvard will have the depth to go deep. On defense, they do...but Harvard will need a few guys to step up and in such as Badini, Krusko, Pelton Byce, etc)

Yale will be without Coach Allainfor the same tourney.

I would make Neil Sheehy of Minnesota the favorite for hobey followed by Donato

Bothman, I will have to agree with you! And they are on both sides of the puck! Donato individual skill is off the charts while Fox skill is"letting the puck do the work" with right decision. In my mind, Fox is the best but can he play in his own zone? We all know his puck-moving ability and decison-making is off the charts.

Essentially, if you are a D man who can move the puck and your decision-making is solid, it stands to reason that you don't have issues playing in your own end.

Yes I agree with a caveat...can Fox handle the one on one skill guy bearing down on him, the power forward with outside speed and leverage going to the net with the puck, win board battles and/or battles in front of the net, especially on PK when you don't have the puck

You could probably ask that question of just about any D in the ECAC. From what I've seen, he does very well handling one on one situations with forwards bearing down on him. Physically, he is not the most opposing defenseman in the league so board battles will be a crapshoot. On the PK, it's more about positioning and not allowing the other team to maximize puck management. He's one of the best in controlling and sending the puck the other way.

Skate79, you do not have to defend Fox; as I stated earlier about his lights-out offensive skills, he is one of the BEST in the country, let alone the ECAC; I can see for myself when we play you guys and also in World Jrs. etc. I agree with you on the importance of positioning but many times you dont have a choice as you are sliding side to side, up and down while in the box or diamond on PK depending on where the puck is while a big opposing forward is pretty much planted in the crease.

I'm not defending him per se; just answering your previous post and the question you had about handling the one on one skill guy. And as I mentioned in my post, you could ask that question of just about any D man in the ECAC, HE or any other league.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2016-2017

“It’s a possibility,” said Donato, a sociology major. “But I think in the end, I’d like to graduate. I came to Harvard for a reason. But I also have to consider what is best for my career. At the end of the day, I want to be a hockey player, and if it makes sense to go after the end of my junior year, that’s a possibility. But I think in the end I am going to go do based off what my dad thinks, what my family thinks . . . what’s best for my hockey career.”

The above quote is from today's Sunday Notes section written by Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe. The first part of Dupont's Notes column focuses on Ryan and the possible Olympic experience he will share with his dad. I honestly think it is a tug of war with him right now as to what he wants to do at the end of March next year. I don't like to read into statements but if I was hazarding a guess, I would say that Ryan is thinking seriously of finishing with his class. It must be hard on Teddy as well because on the one hand, he'd love for Ryan to finish his four years and continue to help the Crimson; on the other, he probably doesn't want to stand in the way of his son getting a head start on his future as a Bruin.

Yes I would agree about defending in ECAC play but we have both established that he is Top 5 in collegiate play so as such you would expect more especially someone definitely moving on to the next level...pro play and NHL!

Re: Harvard Crimson 2016-2017

Looks like Bode Wilde is no longer committed to Harvard. At least Heisenberg no longer lists Harvard next to his name. Have not heard of anything definitive about this, but Heisenberg generally has the recruiting pulse.

A big loss, but Harvard has a ton of blue line talent coming in. Wilde is a dual citizen (Canada & US) and Major Junior was largely believed to be a real possibility. Not sure if Wilde will opt for MJ or another college, but I am sure we will learn more over the coming days/weeks.
