Harvard Crimson 2014-2015: Restoring the Karma

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-2015: Restoring the Karma

We should take care of Brown next weekend. Then we would face Darth Vader - a.k.a Yale. Wouldn't it be sweet to knock them off in the Whale?

Besides the fact that Brown has been on a relative roll lately (shades of 2009 anyone?), I'd say that it would be just as sweet for me to win the lottery as it would be the beat Yale at the Whale, except that I probably have better odds.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-2015: Restoring the Karma

Question for those in the know. If Harvard gets past Brown, is it certain that they will be the team headed to New Haven the following weekend, based on the current seeding? Or is there a re-seeding step after the first round that could change this? Thanks in advance.

There is a reseeding ... The only two teams Harvard can play in the quarterfinals, if they get past Brown, are Yale or Colgate.

That makes sense, thanks. And the alternative (Colgate) only happens if Princeton beats Dartmouth, at Thompson, yes?

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-2015: Restoring the Karma

Thanks for sending this .... I posted to LinkedIn Harvard Alumni Sites (~30,000). Don't know if it will do any good. I thought that the Harvard student turnout at the Union game was much improved over previous years and your band was there in force. Two of my kids are also Harvard alumni and I am asking them to post on their facebook pages ..... I bet Harvard could also get a lot more support from the locals especially if it visibly supported local youth hockey programs (free admission, on ice intermission contests, hosting championship games). Union does some of that. Should be a great game .... two excellent teams. Would be great if both can make the F4 along with (select only two) Yale, St. Lawrence and Colgate. :)

I regret to advise you that Harvard very rarely has the band play at hockey games anymore. They apparently are required for basketball, the athletic department's most favored sport. I think that I have seen the Harvard band at 2 women's games and 2 or 3 men's games so far this year. Saturday the band was at the women's game but not at the men's as the band had to go play for women's basketball. Sometimes they hire a local high school band from Belmont or Medford to be a faux Harvard band in Harvard shirts but it is not the same as they do not know any Harvard songs. Often there is no band at all. Most of the time they simply play really crappy recorded music really really loud.

There is some outreach to youth hockey but on a revenue production model. Youth teams can play a 3 minute mini-game between periods and get free admission for the players and two coaches if they pay $450 for a men's game or $350 for a women's game.

There are very few students coming to games anymore. I was a bit surprised at the Princeton game to see about 20 students sitting together and cheering loudly at the bottom of Section 1.

If you look at the the weekly email edition of Harvard Magazine there is a weekly article about Harvard Basketball and there have been perhaps 3 articles all season long about hockey. It is becoming clear that the Harvard Athletic department favors basketball and probably would be happy to have hockey become a club sport.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-2015: Restoring the Karma

I was thinking of bringing a kazoo, standing in the band section, and playing "10,000 Men Of Harvard"...maybe that would shame someone. In any case, the Belmont high band is better than the Harvard band.

To make matters worse, the time of the Yale basketball game on Friday has been rescheduled to 8, so it overlaps the hockey. Expect few people there.

If Harvard winds up playing Colgate in the second round, there is a chance to get to Lake Placid, if Yale forget about it. They took care of business against Princeton, which is not having one of its better years to be kind. 36 goals in 27 games, but the Quinnipiac game was the test.

This is one of the most disappointing seasons I can remember. I had given up on them as long as Donato is coaching, and have no expectations of a .500 season each year, yet they looked promising in the first half of the season. They had injuries to key people, but except for McNally, those players have been back for a while. Blackwell played well this weekend, he hustles every shift. They are not competitive with Yale, St. Lawrence, and now Quinnipiac has surpassed them. I don't have high expectations each year, win a game in the beanpot, play competitively on the first night, and beat Cornell at home. Whatever else happens is gravy.

Same old same old as long as Donato is the head coach.

You're kidding right? The Belmont high school band better than our college band? Please. It's like night and day. The Belmont kids, while I'm sure very bright and hard working, can't hold a candle to our band. And they don't know our fight songs. Even the national anthem is painful for them.

Why so down on the team? Okay, the second half was definitely disappointing but you can't discount the whole season based on the last 14 games. What if we do wind up playing Yale and beat them at the Whale? Still disappointed? Look, I'm not expecting miracles but after the last few seasons, this team showed marked improvement and hustled every game. The system broke down towards the end and they'll have to figure that out next year. Much like '79-80, the team is starting to believe they can win against the big boys. They just need a few more blue chip recruits and a solid goalie who can steal a few games and we're right there. Don't forget we've lost some recruits who could have made a difference this year and next. We have to make up for that.

I've been critical of Teddy but bringing in Paul Pearl has made a difference and if we give this a couple of more seasons, we may make it to the Frozen Four. We should expect to given the success Yale and Union have enjoyed these past couple of years (BTW, think Union fans are happy about where their team finished this year?).

Let's not sell them short just yet. Still some hockey to be played.

Why not? We've judged seasons on the first 14 games before. It is half a season. Even still at our best we've played some of our best hockey in a very long time.

Yes. In retrospect, the Fall '14 run seems kind of miraculous now, and it was a blast to watch. But this is still our team. Definitely making the trip to Ingalls.

And I too really miss the (Harvard) band.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2014-2015: Restoring the Karma

Well I have ordered my tickets for all three Brown games. I had thought of ordering only the first two but bought three as I did not want to jink us. I would like to see two Harvard wins Friday and Saturday.

I would not get my hopes up about seeing the Harvard Band this weekend as the men's basketball is at home both Friday and Saturday and for some reason they seem to take priority. Also, fair warning about parking Saturday. The men's basketball game is at 6 so their fans may have scooped up all the spaces before the hockey fans get there. The parking staff try very hard but seem to have difficulty saving spaces for people with season parking passes who are guaranteed a space. Also, the Harvard women have an ECAC semi-final game vs Quinnipiac at 4PM Saturday. (another double header for me, there were two this past weekend).

In a shameless plug for the Harvard women; if you are going to drive to Bright early for the men's game come a bit earlier and cheer for the women. Really good hockey!

So are you driving to Potsdam, NY for the 4PM women's hockey game and then expect to be back in Cambridge for the men's bball game??? :D Or is the women's hockey game being televised at the Bright Center??

Is the Business School lot a viable alternative on a night like this? We don't have a pass this year. Thanks.

Yes and in my opinion easier to get out of after an event. Remind them that you are an alumnus and they will usually allow you to part for free.

What if you're not an alumnus, and are, in fact, a fan of the visiting team? Asking for a "friend." :)

Back to the old days of the semis and finals being in the same place, so the Harvard women are at Cheel. The game is on ESPN3. http://www.ecachockey.com/women/2014-15/News/20150303_ESPN3_Women-s_Champ

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Due to several home events and recent inclement weather, fans traveling to Harvard home events this weekend are advised to allow more time to arrive.

Harvard athletics has several home contests slated for March 6-8, and with many events occurring at the same time, fans should allow more time to arrive and park their vehicles in the appropriate Harvard parking areas.

All bearers of Harvard winter season parking passes are guaranteed parking within the complex.

Fans unable to park inside the Athletics Complex can park in the Harvard Business School parking areas accessible off of both North Harvard Street and Western Avenue.

More information on directions to the Harvard Athletics Complex is available here. http://www.gocrimson.com/General/releases/20150303_parking

I am very sorry. I saw that on a website, GoCrimson.com apparently posted in error.. I will be there for the men's game.

The Crimson website still says "vs." not "at" as they use for away games.

Yeah, I guess since Harvard's the "home" team they have it listed like that. It should say Harvard vs. Quinnipiac at Cheel Arena though.
