Of course we have this discussion every year, but you can definitely cite examples of the alternative. The 2009 team stepped up big the final weekend to win the conference regular season title. The 2006 team stepped up big to get home ice, and then went on to win a title few expected. I will just leave it at that the program's record in "stepping up" in big occasions is mixed.

Though where I draw the line is that I see little reason to project an ECAC quarterfinal series loss given Harvard's strong historical track record there. They just haven't ever missed there since 1998, and even that team gave No. 1 seed a run for their money. And I just don't expect a team that is still projected to rank in the top 4 and get NCAA home ice right now is going to be the Harvard team that fails to advance to the ECAC semifinals. So I expect Katey will have the team well prepared.

And oh yeah, they still get an ECAC co-champion trophy even though they aren't No. 1 seed, right? Congrats?

Oh and also, congrats to the Ivy champions -- thanks to Yale beating Princeton Saturday. Princeton somehow seemed to have a knack for doing better in its Ivy games to date and almost beat out Harvard for the title, but couldn't pull off the 3 points for a co-share and 4 points for an outright share.

Harvard finished 8-2-0 in Ivy play. Princeton finished 7-2-1.

Harvard's third straight Ivy title -- second straight outright championship.

And I think the ECAC regular season co-title is the first since 2009, though they haven't been outright champs or No. 1 seed since 2008. Not bad.

I have been following the discussions for the season and pay attention to what people are saying. I follow goalies mostly.

Some key observations:

1. Clarkson has definitely found a replacement for Howe in Tiley (.939 S%, 1.38 GAA) plays all teams

2 Maschmeyer is playing well since her first 4 games of the season (in last 13 games has a 1.08 GAA and a .952 S%) would put her in top 2 of nation if ignoring the first 4 games - which you can't, and as others say doesn't usually play the cupcakes

3. Laden has a great GAA and a reasonable S% behind Q's defensive system and has 13 SO's!!!!! - plays all teams

4. Newell's stats don't look great but her last 6 games have been of the outstanding variety. - plays all teams

5. Lundberg - what can you say - so far 1041 saves - probably will need therapy. - plays all teams

6. MacDonald same comments as stated for Newell. - generally plays all teams but was out after Christmas (injury?) but came back with a vengeance.

Up and comers - Chemago with positive notes for Rando, O'Brien and Leonoff.

What I'm noticing is that the ECAC has a ton of very good goalies and in 1 game series can easily put the better ranked team out. Looks like the WCHA could argue that their goalies are in the same category, which I cannot argue, but tend to watch ECAC and just follow the scoreboard for the others.

Lundberg recorded her 3,000th career save early in the second period, becoming the 21st member of NCAA Women's Hockey 3,000 saves club. Lundberg made 33 saves in the contest to give her 1,110 on the season, a mark that ranks second in school history and sixth in NCAA history with saves made in a single season. The Peterborough, NH native finishes her career with 3,023 career stops, currently placing her 20th all-time

Last night I stopped by my IPad to watch a couple games, Yale & Union hoping to see a spoiler! ;) well 1 out of 2 not bad!! Having said that I was witnessed quite a treat!! The 1st line of Cornell "Jillian Saulnier,*Brianne Jenner & Emily Fulton" vs Lundberg and her senior game chasing her 3000th save. What at show!! When you talk about goalies making an incredible save, well, last night Lundberg made at least 7 spectacular saves, 1 twisting and throwing everything she had from one side of the net to the other to defend a laser pass to 1 timer on the open back door that was absolutely fantastic. Lundberg & Union fell 0-4. Shots on goal ended at Cornell out shooting Union 37-25.

That '09 team was very talented and should not have had to wait until the last weekend to clinch. A slow start necessitated a fast finish and sure, I'll give them credit for that. But what about losing to RPI in the semis? Okay, Van der Bliek played out of her mind but we should have won nonetheless.

Since '08, the team has not performed as well especially in one and done games. I am expecting that they will get it together for the series against Yale despite not having Hilary Crowe for the rest of the season. But it wouldn't surprise me either if they lost given what transpired last weekend. This is the time to close the deal. They need to look in the mirror and decide if they want to be champions. Saying that you are playing for a national championship isn't enough. Goals (not the puck variety) are great, results are better.

In Ancient Rome, the advertisements for the Secular Games (celebrated once every hundred years, as the name implies) stated that the Games were an athletic contest "that no person now alive has ever seen, and no person now alive will ever see again."

We have just seen a third-line center on a Katey Stone coached team voted to the All-Ivy First Team!

Not sure what that means all I know is that the 2 goalies selected as first and second team are sometimes pretty good! I've seen them both beat by cellar dwelling teams! It's one thing to be a cellar dweller taking on the top teams and giving up a goal here and there, but these two have been beat by the bottom several times where are they from? ;)

And Away You Go, do you really know what your talking about. Again I follow goalies and you put a dig in on Maschmeyer and Newell. So I went back and checked Maschmeyer out for her 3 years -----

Over her 3 year career she has a .939 Save %, and has 40 wins with 16 of those coming in a year where the coach and Olympians were gone. Just weird that many just throw out uneducated opinions without facts.

If And Away he's Gone wants me to fire stats on Newell I will too. And very few are talking about how strong Tiley and Laden's were this year. Laden may have much fewer shots/game but ask any goalie and they will tell you that its much more difficult to keep a clean sheet with fewer shots.

It's a good thing your a hockey scout, probably your helping out the cellar dwellers. Tell me who you think are Good goalies??? And what are your qualifications for such an important scouting position.

TicTacToe seems to have a very similar sentiment, which makes me wonder if these aren't the same person. Ya, we all get it, Lundberg is a good goalie, But Patty Kaz?? She had a .918 Save% in 2014/15 and has a career .908. 23 other goalies had a better Save% in the Nation this year. Coaches look at Save% as #1 indicator first, GAA is just a function of Shots X Save %. So the most important factor is saving the puck more than other goalies. How they battle to preserve a win and how they give their team a chance to win.

Don't get me wrong, Lundberg is a good goalie, but if I had a choice to pick a goalie for a team it would start and stop on Save%, understanding that the goalie being compared are playing similar competition.

After checking out Union, the only Ranked teams they played were from their own league (Clarkson/Harvard/Cornell/Q/SLU). Not any sign of Boston U, BC, N no WCHA teams, no Mercyhurst. Lundberg could have had 1300+ shots had they faced any 4 or 5 of these. I'm glad they didn't and Lundberg may be able to avoid therapy.

I thin Benzie UND is a great pick for a goalie rep for the Patty Kaz, not playing for BC/Harvard/Wisco/Minn so good on her nomination.
 
My earlier statement was more to the dig about American goalies than anything else.

The team out front has been out standing all the years mentioned, regardless of how you want to spin it. Since you what to bring up Union, we can also bring into the mix Brown and Moore, Henley or Chuli, other goalies who if played for Harvard undoubtedly would have same or similar numbers but I'm not sure it's as easy to know if the roles were reversed how the other goalies would do? After all, it's not just the number of shots, it's losing night after night, year after year but still entering each game with the attitude/mindset to win. It's to that I'm speaking and there are a lot of goalies throughout D1 that fit bill.

There are, and that's part of the problem. How does one differentiate the goalies that are in environments that are not ideal for getting wins? Examples are goalies like Hensley, Binnington, and Treacy that play behind offenses that rank near the bottom. Each would be a good goalie no matter where she played. Treacy helped her team have more success than expected coming into the year; the other two may still have a huge impact on the playoffs, and they've demonstrated that in past years. How do we say which one is the best? It is always an apples/oranges comparison when comparing haves to have nots and everyone in between.

There is a reason that people who win awards are always thanking their teammates. It is hard to have success without their contributions. You can have a mindset to win, but sooner or later, that has to translate into some wins or it won't result in receiving awards.

Given the discussion above, I'm a little surprised that nobody was begun a "how many games will Maschmeyer and Laing start against Yale, respectively" controversy.

For the record, each has faced the Bulldogs once this season and each has allowed one goal

My guess is M/L/M (if necessary), but no "controversy". If it goes to three, you want Maschmeyer in there, but not if it's her third game in three days. (This time of year it's nice to be able to think of Laing as a #1A rather than #2.)

After today's win I'm assuming it's 2 games (;)) and will re-guess that Stone stays with Maschmeyer, since the most recent goalie to face and survive Staenz is probably the one in the best position to do it again. (A lot of speed on the ice today!)
