Trevor Fidler is no longer coming to Harvard. He's had a very disappointing stint in the USPHL (better competition relative to prep school) and my guess is that this is what's driving the decision (I assume that this decision was Harvard's, but that is pure speculation).

Hoky - any insights?

Curious to see if another D1 team will pursue.

just that it is to bad, Harvard can make a difference in a kids life and I know they made many sacrafices to get him there. Life long best friend with Vesey and I know they both were hell bent on getting there. Fidlers dsd was one of the best high school players ever from mass and is the only player ever to lead BU all 4 years in scoring.

Knowing the relationship, I am sure Teddy tried very, very hard to make it work.

Can only assume it eas an index issue. I doubt usphl performance had anything to do with it.

That is too bad. I think Marc Biega (Merrimack) may have very well been a similar casualty of the Academic Index.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

In an attempt to turn the page, and why I am optimistic, let's consider some facts & figures. The below assumes that all newcomers come to Harvard when they are scheduled to and that no one transfers or departs early.

Departures:
Raphael Girard (G)
David Valek (F) (6pts)
Dan Ford (D) (3pts)
Danny Fick (D) (1pt)

Harvard loses a total of 2 goals & 10 points off of this year's team. That translates into 5% of total points and 3% of total goals. Thats right - Harvard will look to make a significant push up the food chain next year with no team in the ECAC losing as little as Harvard.

Key Additions (Listed in order of anticipated impact):
Brandon Fortunato (D) - Leading defensive point getter on the USNDT - 18 Team who could even QB the powerplay as a frosh
Adam Plant (D) - Similar in makeup to Fortunato, but probably a little less battle tested in the BCHL
Alec McCrea (D) - Solid and steady, stay-at-home defenseman
Wiley Sherman (D) - Big 6'5'' defenseman that I project to take some time to transition to pace of D1 hockey (like most big defenseman require)
Seb Lloyd (F) - Forward out of the BCHL who I expect to perform like a Luke Esposito did this year
Jake Horton (F) - Don't know a lot about Jake, but imagine he will add depth as a frosh
Eddie Ellis (F) - a power forward who will also likely add depth as a frosh
Merrick Madsen (G) - Tough to project goalies. Flyers draft pick, but hard to imagine Michalek not grabbing the majority of mins next year

Here are some projected lines (The forwards will largely stay in tact from this past year)
Vesey - Malone - Hart
Kriscuolo - Kerfoot - Esposito
Lloyd - Gozzo - Zielonka
Moy - MacGregor - O'Regan/Horton/Jaw

Here are the Defenseman (This will be interesting as Harvard's D will be young, but very talented next year). Be lots of compettion on the blue line (10 D, 11 if you count Luzar).
McNally - Newell
Fortunato - Everson
Plant - Guiltinan

Extras - Bergin, McCrea, Sherman, Anderson

Well thought out, but let's just hope there are no early departure; that has been a common theme with Donato as head coach.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

You still going to stand by Donato as a good decision to coach H hockey?!

Donato should do the right thing and quit... but with Junior coming in, that is highly improbable.

I said it SIX years ago, and I'll say it again, FIRE DONATO!!!!

Where in my post did I say that I was standing by Teddy? If you took the time to read what I wrote, I said that if changes are not made after what transpired this season, then we know the athletic department truly does not care about men's hockey. I don't think it is improbable but Harvard will have to fire him because I don't see him leaving on his own accord. And it has nothing to do with his kid coming to Harvard. Tim Army's kid went to Providence and soon thereafter, his dad was sacked. He stayed on under Leaman's watch.

What about Tringale? Does he not make the team next year?

Ha! Of course it is not in "this post." However, you've (and others who are easily fooled in this very forum) have stuck with Donato for years.

So, I ask the question again... 6 years later and in his 10th, do you still believe Donato is the guy to Coach H hockey?

I wouldn't say that anyone who has a rooting interest in Harvard has been 'fooled' into believing anything regarding Teddy's qualifications or lack thereof. We offer opinions based on what we see on the ice. And for the past several years, it hasn't been a good product. And it's been 20 years since we went to a Frozen Four. So yes, the program is in need of an overhaul and that means a new coach.

I haven't been shy about voicing that opinion by the way. And I've taken heat for it. But so what? My opinion matters little to the powers that be. What matters is $$$$. If people stop renewing season tickets and lately there has been a firestorm in the Crimson from season ticket holders who want a change, then the administration will act. Until that time, Teddy is here to stay, like it or not.

Why do you care so much about HU hockey ? It's their problem and let them deal with it.

Harvard hockey has to be running a huge deficit as it is. That facility aint cheap and the 82% attendance figure on USCHO seems like it has been inflated by administration buy-backs by roughly... 50%.

Harvard is no charity and Donato's teams have underperformed for years so one has to ask: what are they getting from it? It sounds like a mix of 10% H thinks Donato is a good ambassador for the school and 90% that hiring decisions are strongly affected by cronyism. If that's correct, Ted will stay no matter what season ticket holders do, outside of actually embarking on a campaign to create embarrassing situations for the school (screw up all you like but don't damage The Image -- c.f. Hammonds, Summers, grade inflation, cheating, etc...).

With the Landry addition to the rink, the cost for operating will go up even more. I'm sure the gift has some provision for operations early on but after that, it's dip into the operating budget for the University. Someone at Holyoke Center won't be happy if revenues keep dropping. And the 82% is definitely inflated. The rink is barely half full for most games.

I'll say it again, if Scalise and the administration don't care about the program, Teddy will be allowed to stay on. They have to be the ones to decide if men's hockey program is important enough to find another coach and work with admissions to get us better players. Barring that, we'll continue to have more of what we saw this season. They did it for men's hoop. They can do it for hockey.
